To disable Stratum’s block-break protection, edit stratum.json and change two separate values to false: Hardening.BlockBreakGuards and BlockBreakGuards.Enabled. Save the file, then restart the Vintage Story server. The change removes Stratum’s anti-grief check, so use it only when you understand the trade-off or are diagnosing legitimate players being kicked while mining.

What you need before changing the setting
You need access to the server files and permission to restart the server. On a managed host, this is normally the host panel’s File Manager and restart control. On a self-managed installation, use the server data directory where Stratum stores stratum.json.

- Confirm that Stratum is installed and that you are editing its
stratum.json, not Vintage Story’s vanillaserverconfig.json. - Make a copy of
stratum.jsonbefore editing. Name the copy with a date or otherwise keep the previous version easy to restore. - Stop the server, or pause administrative changes if your host supports that workflow, before saving the file. Do not edit a file that is being regenerated or written by a live process.
- Keep the JSON syntax intact. A missing comma, extra comma, unmatched brace or quoted key can prevent Stratum from loading.
Configuration names are release-sensitive. If your file has no Hardening or BlockBreakGuards object, do not blindly add keys copied from another release. Check the configuration generated by your installed Stratum version and its release notes for the equivalent guard setting.
Disable Block Break Guard step by step
- Open the Stratum configuration. In your host panel, open the File Manager, locate
stratum.json, and choose the panel’s text editor. On a self-hosted server, open the same file in the Stratum server-data directory. - Find the
Hardeningobject. Change itsBlockBreakGuardsvalue tofalse:

}Do not delete the remaining properties unless the configuration format for your installed release specifically requires it. Keeping the object intact makes it easier to restore the guard later and preserves any logging or tuning values already selected by the server administrator.
- Validate and save. Check that the file remains valid JSON and that both Boolean values are unquoted
false, not the text"false". Save the file in the panel editor or write it back to the server directory. - Restart the server. Stratum reads this configuration during startup. A restart is required before the new values take effect.
Why two values must be changed
Stratum exposes the block-break protection through a hardening switch and through the guard’s own configuration object. Setting only Hardening.BlockBreakGuards to false may leave the guard object enabled; setting only BlockBreakGuards.Enabled to false may leave hardening policy active. The documented procedure changes both so the feature is disabled at both configuration layers.

Turning it off removes that protection for the server. Players may stop receiving false kicks from unusually fast tools or modded mining mechanics, but the server will no longer have this particular anti-grief check available to reject suspicious break progress.

When disabling it is appropriate
Legitimate fast-tool kicks
A common reason to test this change is a player being kicked while using a legitimate fast tool, a modded tool, or another mechanic that makes break progress look abnormal. Stratum maintainer guidance says the block-break hardening can be disabled or tuned in the configuration when these false positives occur. A release fix for false kicks on fast tool breaks has also been recorded, so update-related fixes may be preferable to leaving the guard disabled permanently.
A controlled diagnostic test
If you are not sure whether Block Break Guard is responsible, make the backup first, disable both values, restart once, and reproduce the mining action with the same player, tool and mod set. Record whether the kick disappears. If it does, review Stratum’s release notes and tuning options before deciding whether to keep the guard off. If it does not, restore the original values and investigate another subsystem, a mod conflict, connection instability or a server log error.
Why broad anti-cheat changes are a poor first step
Block-break protection is narrower than disabling all anti-cheat features. Changing only the two block-break keys limits the scope of the experiment and leaves unrelated protections under their existing settings. Do not disable movement protection simply because the word “anticheat” appears in the same configuration area.

Block-break protection versus movement protection
Stratum has a separate movement-protection path described as Anticheat -> Movement -> Enabled. That switch controls movement checks, not the block-break guard. It is the wrong setting for a player who is being kicked while mining, and changing it can remove protection that has nothing to do with the reported problem.
Use the block-break keys in stratum.json for mining-related false kicks. Investigate the movement setting only when the symptoms are movement-related, such as speed, flight or position validation, and only after confirming the relevant release’s configuration layout.
Can you tune the guard instead of turning it off?
Yes. The documented BlockBreakGuards object contains thresholds and retention controls that can be tuned when a server wants to preserve protection while reducing false positives. The available properties in the documented configuration shape are:

These figures are the values shown in the documented configuration example, not a guarantee that every Stratum release ships with the same values. Change one setting at a time, keep a backup, and test with the tool or mod that triggered the kick. If the release documentation does not explain a property, avoid guessing at its effect; disabling the guard is more predictable than applying several unexplained threshold changes.

For a mining-only problem, tuning or disabling only Block Break Guard is the more targeted response. Broader anti-cheat changes should not be used as a substitute for identifying the subsystem that is actually producing the kick.

- Wait until the server reports that startup has completed and players can connect.
- Join with the affected account and reproduce the exact mining action that previously caused the kick.
- Check the server and Stratum logs for the old block-break violation message. If violations still appear, confirm that both keys are in the active
stratum.jsonand that the server was restarted after saving. - Test an ordinary block break as well as the fast-tool or modded-tool case. This distinguishes a general server problem from the original trigger.
- Monitor the server for unauthorized or automated mining now that the guard is off. If abuse appears, restore the guard or move to a narrowly tuned configuration.
What to do if the server will not start
A malformed JSON file is the most immediate risk after a manual edit. Stop trying to repair a live, repeatedly failing configuration and use the backup you made before editing.

- Stop the server from the host panel or service manager.
- Restore the backup copy of
stratum.json, or replace the edited file with the last known-good version. - Start the server and confirm that it loads normally.
- Compare the restored file with the release-generated configuration. If the expected objects are absent, consult the Stratum release notes for the correct keys instead of adding undocumented ones.
- Once the server is stable, make a single minimal change, validate the JSON, save it, and restart again.
If the file parses correctly but the guard still behaves unexpectedly, the cause may be a release-specific schema, a regenerated configuration, or a different Stratum subsystem. Keep the original values available while checking the installed release information.
Why /serverconfig is not the right command
Vintage Story’s /serverconfig commands manage core game-server settings that persist in serverconfig.json. The command reference recommends using /help because command syntax varies by installed version, but it does not document Stratum’s guard keys. Block Break Guard belongs to Stratum’s stratum.json, so changing vanilla server settings will not disable it.
Restoring protection later
To re-enable the guard, set both values back to true:
