Why WordPress Websites Get Hacked and How to Prevent It

Most WordPress hacks exploit outdated extensions, weak credentials, unsafe uploads or poor hosting controls. This guide explains the attack paths, prevention steps, security-layer trade-offs and the correct response after a compromise.

WordPress sites are usually compromised because an outdated plugin, stolen password, unsafe upload, excessive permission or weak hosting boundary gives an attacker a path in—not because WordPress core is destined to fail. The most effective defense is disciplined maintenance: update and remove extensions, protect every administrator account with unique credentials and two-factor authentication, limit privileges, add layered monitoring and firewall protection, and keep tested backups that an intruder cannot overwrite.

What actually makes a WordPress site vulnerable?

WordPress is widely deployed and open source, so attackers can automate scans for recognizable versions, plugin names and login endpoints. Wordfence’s 2024 security guide recorded WordPress on more than 34% of websites worldwide; that figure describes the guide’s 2024 snapshot, not a current market-share measurement. A large installed base gives criminals many targets and makes a newly disclosed extension flaw worth exploiting at scale.

The platform itself is only one part of the risk. A WordPress installation combines core software, plugins, themes, PHP, the web server, a database, hosting controls and administrator accounts. Any component that accepts input, writes files or grants privileges can become an entry point. WordPress.org’s hardening guidance puts the responsibility in practical terms: compromises are “rarely … attributed to the infrastructure, and most often attributed to the application itself (i.e., the environment you are responsible for).” That does not mean the server is irrelevant; it means the site owner must secure the whole environment rather than assume a reputable core project makes every add-on safe.

The main ways attackers get in

Vulnerable or outdated plugins and themes

Extensions add code that handles forms, media, payments, user accounts and administrative actions. A coding error can permit SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), authentication bypass, arbitrary file upload or remote code execution. Attackers continuously scan for the affected plugin and version, then send the exploit automatically. Public exploit details often appear soon after a patch, so delaying an update can leave a known weakness exposed.

Wordfence’s report on vulnerabilities disclosed in 2024 attributed 96% of them to plugins. That is a count of disclosed WordPress vulnerabilities for that year, not a claim that every plugin is unsafe or that core never needs updating. It does show where routine maintenance should begin. Themes can also contain exploitable code, especially when they include page builders, custom upload handlers or abandoned libraries.

Weak, reused or stolen credentials

An attacker does not need a software exploit if an administrator password has been reused, phished or exposed in another breach. Automated password attacks target /wp-login.php, XML-RPC and other authentication paths with huge lists of stolen credentials. Once an administrator account is taken, the intruder can install a backdoor plugin, alter templates, create hidden users or change content while appearing to use legitimate access.

WordPress core does not include built-in two-factor authentication. The WordPress Developer Handbook therefore recommends enabling 2FA for every administrator account through a plugin or an identity provider. A long, unique password stored in a password manager is the baseline; 2FA prevents a stolen password alone from completing most account takeovers.

Injection, cross-site scripting and unsafe uploads

SQL injection occurs when untrusted input reaches a database query without safe handling. It can expose or alter users, settings and content. XSS inserts attacker-controlled script into a page viewed by an administrator or visitor; a successful attack may steal sessions or perform actions in the victim’s browser. An insecure upload feature may accept executable PHP instead of an image, place files in a web-accessible directory or fail to check file names and MIME types. Authentication-bypass bugs skip normal permission checks entirely.

These weaknesses may be in a plugin, theme, custom code or a site-specific integration. They are not fixed by changing a homepage password after the fact; the vulnerable code or upload path must be patched, removed or isolated.

Abandoned, unofficial and “nulled” software

A component that no longer receives security fixes remains exposed indefinitely. Unofficial or “nulled” copies may include hidden malware, altered update mechanisms or stolen licensing code. Download WordPress itself from WordPress.org and obtain plugins and themes from reputable maintainers whose update history, support activity and compatibility information can be checked. If a component is no longer maintained, replace it rather than waiting for an attacker to find the flaw.

Hosting and configuration weaknesses

On a poorly isolated shared server, one compromised account can expose neighboring sites or shared credentials. Excessive file permissions, writable directories, unnecessary services, exposed database or SSH interfaces and weak separation between staging and production increase the blast radius. HTTPS protects traffic in transit, but it does not repair vulnerable application code or a stolen administrator password.

No reliable detection or recovery

A backdoor can remain after the visible spam or defacement is removed. Without login records, file-change alerts and malware scanning, an owner may not notice a new administrator, scheduled task or outbound connection. Without an off-site backup tested through a real restore, the only available copy may contain the attacker’s persistence—or may be unusable when the site is under pressure.

How large is the automated threat?

Wordfence reported blocking more than 54 billion malicious requests and more than 55 billion password attacks during 2024. Those are the provider’s aggregate blocks for that calendar year, not a prediction of what one site will receive. They illustrate why manual vigilance alone is insufficient: scanners and credential attacks operate continuously, including against small sites with little traffic.

A prevention plan that works in practice

1. Build an accurate inventory

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, review Plugins > Installed Plugins and Appearance > Themes. Record the active version, maintainer, last update and whether each item is required.
  2. Remove inactive plugins and themes instead of leaving them installed. Deactivation stops normal execution but does not eliminate vulnerable files.
  3. List the WordPress core version, PHP version, web server, database, hosting accounts, staging copies, cron jobs and external integrations. An overlooked staging site can remain an unpatched foothold.
  4. Assign an owner and maintenance window for every component. If nobody can explain why an extension exists or who will update it, remove or replace it.

2. Patch before attackers automate the flaw

Use Dashboard > Updates to apply WordPress, plugin and theme updates, and patch PHP and operating-system packages through the host or server administrator. Read the maintainer’s changelog for breaking changes, take a backup before a major update and verify the site’s critical forms afterward. Security updates should not wait for a quarterly redesign. If an extension has no supported release, disable and remove it, then migrate to a maintained alternative.

3. Lock down administrator access

  • Give each person a separate account; never share an administrator login.
  • Use a long, unique password generated and stored in a password manager.
  • Enable 2FA for every administrator, as recommended by the WordPress Developer Handbook. Prefer an identity provider or a well-maintained security extension that supports recovery codes.
  • Review Users > All Users regularly. Delete dormant accounts, remove former contractors and investigate unfamiliar administrators.
  • Limit login attempts and consider restricting the administrative area by VPN or trusted network where the site’s workflow allows it. Test an emergency recovery account before enforcing a restriction.

4. Apply least privilege

WordPress roles should match the work being done: editors need publishing capabilities, while only a small number of trusted people should install extensions or change configuration. Contractors should receive time-limited accounts and lose access when a project ends. Review application passwords, API tokens, hosting panels, database users, SSH keys and FTP accounts as well as WordPress roles. A compromised editor account is less damaging than a compromised administrator, but it still needs monitoring.

5. Harden the application and server

  • Put an edge web application firewall (WAF) or equivalent protection in front of the origin when practical, and keep host-level and WordPress-level defenses in separate layers.
  • Use HTTPS for the entire site, including the login and administration areas.
  • Restrict file and directory permissions to the minimum required for updates and uploads. Do not make the whole web root writable.
  • Disable services and administrative interfaces that are not needed, and restrict database, SSH and file-transfer access by network and key-based authentication where available.
  • Keep unrelated sites out of the same hosting account. If shared hosting is unavoidable, choose a provider with meaningful account isolation and a documented response process.
  • Configure upload handling to accept only required file types, store uploads safely and prevent uploaded scripts from executing.

6. Monitor for the first signs of compromise

Collect and retain authentication, web-server, PHP, database and file-change logs. Alert on new administrator accounts, unusual login locations or times, plugin and theme changes, modified core files, unexpected scheduled tasks and spikes in outbound traffic. A malware scanner can identify known signatures and suspicious changes; a WAF can block requests before they reach WordPress. Neither replaces patching, because a new or obfuscated attack may evade signatures and a blocked request does not prove the underlying code is safe.

7. Make backups independent and restorable

Automate database and file backups to an off-site destination. Keep at least one copy that the WordPress account cannot delete or overwrite, such as immutable or separately credentialed storage. Retain enough history to predate a slow-moving compromise. At scheduled intervals, restore a copy to an isolated environment and verify pages, media, plugins, user accounts and database integrity. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Protection location Typical strengths Questions to ask Operational trade-off
Edge WAF Blocks many malicious requests before they reach the origin; can absorb abusive traffic. Can rules be tuned for your APIs, login flow and game-community features? How are false positives reviewed? Requires correct DNS and origin settings; an overly aggressive rule can block legitimate players or administrators.
Host or server controls Improves isolation, service configuration, permissions and network access. Are accounts isolated? Who patches PHP and the operating system? What logs and incident support are included? May require host cooperation or server expertise; weak shared hosting can enlarge the blast radius.
WordPress firewall and malware scanner Sees WordPress users, files, plugins and database changes; can alert or block inside the application. Does scanning run continuously or on demand? Can it detect persistence and show a useful remediation path? Runs after traffic reaches the site and consumes resources; a compromised administrator may tamper with it.
Managed malware cleanup Provides specialist investigation, removal of persistence and guidance during an incident. Is human response included, how quickly does it begin, and do they address the initial foothold rather than only visible files? It is reactive and cannot substitute for updates, access control or backups.
Managed backups and restore Provides off-site copies and a defined recovery process. Are backups isolated from the WordPress account, how long are they retained, and is a clean restore tested? Restoring an infected backup reintroduces the attacker; backup integrity and timing matter.

Before subscribing, check compatibility with the site’s hosting stack, caching, memberships, ecommerce or game-community integrations. Establish who receives alerts, who can approve a block and who has authority to restore production. Current prices, plan limits and support promises change by vendor and region, so verify those terms directly before purchase.

What to do immediately after a compromise

Do not start by deleting random files or restoring the newest backup. That can destroy evidence, leave a backdoor behind or overwrite the only clean copy. Use this sequence, adapting it to the severity of the incident:

  1. Record what you saw and when. Save screenshots, suspicious URLs, usernames, notification emails, redirects and the first known time of change. Preserve relevant web, authentication, server and firewall logs.
  2. Preserve a forensic copy. Ask the host to snapshot the site and database, or copy them to isolated storage without executing unknown scripts. Note timestamps and hashes if your response team uses them.
  3. Reduce exposure. Put the site in maintenance mode or restrict it at the edge. Keep a safe status page available if visitors need notice. Do not reconnect a quarantined server just to test a theory.
  4. Contact the host and qualified responders. The host can check neighboring accounts, server logs and snapshots that a site owner cannot see. Escalate to a specialist when payment systems, personal data or persistent server access may be involved.
  5. Scan files and the database. Look for unfamiliar administrators, modified core files, injected JavaScript, scheduled tasks, altered redirects, web shells and encoded payloads. Compare against a known-good WordPress package and documented plugin files; do not trust a scanner’s “clean” result without reviewing persistence locations.
  6. Find and close the initial foothold. Patch or remove the vulnerable plugin or theme, fix the upload or custom-code flaw, revoke abused tokens and correct permissions. Cleaning visible malware while leaving the entry point open invites reinfection.
  7. Rotate every credential. Change WordPress, hosting-panel, database, SSH, FTP, API, identity-provider and email passwords or keys. Revoke application passwords and sessions, then issue new 2FA recovery codes. Perform rotation from a known-clean device.
  8. Rebuild or restore from a known-clean point. A fresh, patched installation is safer than trying to disinfect an untrusted server. If restoring, select a backup from before the first suspicious activity, verify it in isolation, update all components and change credentials before reconnecting it to the public internet.
  9. Monitor the recovery. Keep heightened logging and file-change alerts enabled. Watch administrator activity, outbound connections, redirects and new users for at least one full operational cycle, and document what was changed.

If payment information or personal data may have been exposed, preserve evidence and follow the breach-notification, contractual and incident-response obligations that apply to your jurisdiction and industry. Do not assume that removing a malicious file proves no data was accessed.

Common prevention mistakes

  • Updating only WordPress core: plugin vulnerabilities represented 96% of WordPress vulnerabilities disclosed in 2024 in Wordfence’s report, so extensions require equal attention.
  • Keeping unused plugins “just in case”: inactive files can still be discovered and exploited.
  • Relying on a security plugin alone: an application-layer scanner cannot correct weak hosting isolation, stolen credentials or an unpatched PHP runtime.
  • Making everything writable so updates work: broad permissions also make a successful web-shell attack more damaging.
  • Backing up to the same account: an attacker with administrator or hosting access may delete or encrypt every local copy.
  • Restoring without investigating: the original vulnerable component, hidden user or scheduled task can immediately reinfect a clean-looking site.
  • Ignoring alerts because the site still looks normal: attackers often use a quiet backdoor for weeks before defacing pages or redirecting visitors.

The practical bottom line

A WordPress website is not automatically easy to hack, but it is an attractive automated target and its security depends on every layer around core. Prioritize maintained software, unique administrator credentials with 2FA, least-privilege access, isolated hosting, layered filtering and monitoring, and independently tested backups. If a breach occurs, preserve evidence, contain the site, remove the foothold, rotate all secrets and restore only from a verified clean state.
