To remove Fallout 4’s built-in depth-of-field blur on PC, edit Fallout4Prefs.ini in your user Documents folder and set both bDoDepthOfField and bScreenSpaceBokeh to 0. The first controls standard depth of field; the second controls Bokeh depth of field, so changing only one may leave some blur active.
Disable both depth-of-field settings in the PC INI file
- Close Fallout 4 and back up the settings file. Open
DocumentsMy GamesFallout4in File Explorer and copyFallout4Prefs.inisomewhere safe. Bethesda documents this as the default folder for the game’s settings files: Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 troubleshooting. - Open
Fallout4Prefs.iniin a text editor. Find the[Imagespace]section. If the settings are already present, change their values; otherwise, add them under that section. - Set both values to zero:
[Imagespace] bDoDepthOfField=0 bScreenSpaceBokeh=0The STEP Modifications reference identifies
bDoDepthOfFieldas the standard DOF control andbScreenSpaceBokehas the Bokeh DOF control; it warns that turning off standard DOF alone does not turn off Bokeh when that setting remains enabled. Both settings are listed with a default value of1: STEP Modifications: Fallout 4 INI Imagespace settings. - Save the file, then fully exit and relaunch the game. Bethesda advises changing graphics options outside the running game and relaunching before changes take effect: Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 display settings.
What the change affects
The edit targets the two documented base-game depth-of-field controls. It is useful if blur bothers you while aiming or during dialogue, but it changes the game’s intended image presentation. A Steam community discussion reports that an underwater scene looks clearer with the settings disabled; that is an individual observation, not a guaranteed effect: Steam Community discussion.
Do not expect these INI values to disable post-processing added by a mod, ENB, ReShade, or another external tool. If blur remains, confirm that you edited the active user-folder file, that both lines are under [Imagespace], and that the game was fully closed before reopening it.
Can you disable depth of field in the launcher or on console?
Launcher
Bethesda’s support page says the Fallout 4 Launcher can auto-detect recommended resolution and aspect ratio and provides detail and other advanced graphics options. It does not specifically document a depth-of-field switch there, so the INI edit is the clearly documented community guidance for this particular effect rather than a confirmed launcher toggle: Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 display settings.

PlayStation and Xbox
The INI instructions apply to PC and are not a supported console procedure. Bethesda’s May 13, 2024 Next Gen Update 2 notes describe console choices for frame-rate target and Visuals or Performance prioritization, but do not document a depth-of-field control. Those notes list PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as version 1.10.984; PlayStation 5 as 1.10.985; and Xbox Series S|X as 1.10.765. These are versions stated in the dated update notes, not a claim about current versions: Bethesda: Fallout 4 Next Gen Update 2 release notes.
If the settings do not persist or the game has graphics problems
Check the active file first
- Reopen
DocumentsMy GamesFallout4Fallout4Prefs.iniand verify both values are still0. - Make sure the lines appear under
[Imagespace], not under a different section. - Save the file and relaunch after fully exiting the game.
Community instructions also mention a copy of the file in the game-installation folder. Treat checking another copy as troubleshooting only if the user-folder edit does not take effect; Bethesda identifies the Documents folder as the default settings location. An older Steam guide also recommends making the file read-only, but that is not an official requirement and can prevent later settings changes. Steam currently labels that guide removed and incompatible with Fallout 4: Steam Community guide.

Restore the original settings
If you want to undo the change, restore your backup of Fallout4Prefs.ini. For broader graphics problems, Bethesda recommends resetting video options to the launcher’s auto-detected defaults. Its troubleshooting instructions also say deleting Fallout4.ini, Fallout4Custom.ini, and Fallout4Prefs.ini in the default C:Users<username>Documentsmy gamesFallout4 folder resets game settings. Back up those files first: deleting them resets settings rather than selectively undoing the two depth-of-field values. Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 troubleshooting.
Does disabling depth of field improve performance?
It may affect performance in some cases, as Bethesda says lowering or disabling graphics settings can help with performance issues, but the cited guidance gives no depth-of-field-specific benchmark or frame-rate gain. Make the change for the visual result you want, not on the expectation of a particular performance increase: Bethesda Support: Fallout 4 troubleshooting.
