How to Disable Emojis in WordPress to Speed Up Your Site

Disable WordPress's emoji loader safely with a site-specific callback, Disable Emojis, or an existing optimization plugin—and learn why the speed gain is usually modest.

WordPress 6.9 already moves its emoji loader out of the blocking path, so disabling emojis is a targeted micro-optimization—not a universal speed cure. Removing the loader can trim a small amount of front-end work, especially on low-end mobile connections, while modern browsers will continue to display emoji characters natively. You can remove only the front-end detection script with a short callback, or use the Disable Emojis plugin when you also want to clean admin/editor assets, styles, DNS prefetching and TinyMCE integration.

What WordPress emoji support actually loads

WordPress adds an emoji detection and loading path for browsers that do not have native emoji support. Historically, that path included an inline JavaScript detector, inline styles, a linked JavaScript file and a DNS-prefetch hint for s.w.org. The detector checked whether the browser could render particular emoji characters and supplied a fallback when it could not.

WordPress 6.9 changed the most performance-sensitive part. The core team converted the loader “from an inline blocking script to a (deferred) script module,” as recorded in the WordPress Trac changeset. The 6.9 Frontend Performance Field Guide therefore treats removal as an optional optimization: “Some sites remove the emoji detection script altogether to improve performance.”

On a current desktop or phone, the practical difference is usually small because the browser already has emoji glyphs built in. Removing the loader mainly means that very old browsers lose WordPress’s fallback support. It does not remove emoji characters from post content, comments or titles.

How much speed can disabling emojis save?

WordPress Core measured the change under controlled conditions rather than promising a fixed improvement for every site. The figures below came from more than 100 page loads of the WordPress Sample Page using low-tier mobile emulation, plus a separate Fast 4G footer-placement comparison.

Change measured by WordPress Core Reported result Qualification
Remove the former inline blocking detector Approximately 3 KB of inline JavaScript avoided Approximate size of the pre-6.9 blocking script; WordPress Core, 2025
Convert the loader to a deferred script module About 7% better First Contentful Paint and 4% better Largest Contentful Paint More than 100 Sample Page loads on low-tier mobile emulation
Move that module to the footer as well An additional 1% to 2% improvement to FCP and LCP Fast 4G emulation; this is a separate controlled comparison

The same field guide says the difference is “largely imperceptible on a high-end or mid-range device.” Your theme, plugins, cache, server, page weight and visitors’ devices can produce a very different result. Measure representative pages before and after changing the emoji hooks; do not treat the percentages above as a guarantee.

Choose the right removal method

Use a small site-specific plugin or child theme for front-end-only removal

A site-specific plugin keeps the change independent of your active theme, so a theme switch does not silently restore it. A child theme’s functions.php is also suitable when you already manage custom theme code. Never edit WordPress core files: updates will overwrite them.

Use Disable Emojis for complete front-end and admin cleanup

The official Disable Emojis plugin removes the front-end and administration detection script, emoji styles, DNS prefetching to s.w.org and the wpemoji TinyMCE plugin. It is the simplest choice when editors, logged-in dashboards and privacy-related resource hints matter as much as public pages.

Use an existing optimization plugin only if it is already part of your stack

Autoptimize’s documentation describes a “remove emojis” setting that strips the inline CSS, inline JavaScript and linked JavaScript file added by WordPress core. Check whether your current optimization plugin already provides this switch before installing another plugin. Two plugins changing the same hooks can make troubleshooting harder and can produce duplicate or conflicting filters.

Before changing production

Record which WordPress version, theme and optimization plugins are active, and note whether your site still supports older browsers. Test the change on staging when possible. A backup is prudent because a syntax error in a theme file can prevent the site from loading, whereas a site-specific plugin can be deactivated from the Plugins screen if its code causes a problem.

  • Choose one owner for emoji cleanup: custom code, Disable Emojis or an optimization plugin.
  • List every cache layer—WordPress page cache, host cache, reverse proxy and CDN—so you can purge all of them after deployment.
  • Decide whether the requirement is public pages only or both the front end and administrator/editor screens.
  • Identify a representative post containing emoji, a comments page, a search result and an editor draft for acceptance testing.

These checks prevent a common false result: the code is correct, but an old cached document still contains the loader, or the public page is clean while the editor still loads its own assets.

Option 1: remove the front-end detector with a callback

This is the smallest change for a public-facing site that only needs the legacy detector gone. Add the code to a site-specific plugin or a child theme’s functions.php:

<?php
add_action( 'init', function () {
    remove_action( 'wp_head', 'print_emoji_detection_script', 7 );
} );

The callback removes the action that prints the emoji detection script in the document head. The priority value 7 is part of the registered core action and must match the priority being removed.

Install it as a site-specific plugin

  1. In wp-content/plugins/, create a directory such as site-tweaks.
  2. Create a PHP file inside it, for example site-tweaks.php, beginning with a normal plugin header and containing the callback above.
  3. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Installed Plugins.
  4. Activate the site-specific plugin.
  5. Purge any page-cache, server-cache or CDN cache before checking the rendered page source.

Install it in a child theme

  1. Open the active child theme’s functions.php through your managed file editor or deployment workflow.
  2. Append the callback without adding a second <?php tag if the file is already in PHP mode.
  3. Save, clear caches and load a logged-out page in a private browser window.

WordPress’s plugin JavaScript guidance places front-end assets on wp_enqueue_scripts and administration assets on admin_enqueue_scripts, and documents delayed strategies such as defer. Those distinctions matter if you later extend a custom plugin to cover admin screens; do not assume a front-end callback automatically changes the editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the minimal callback does—and does not do

  • It targets: the front-end print_emoji_detection_script action in wp_head.
  • It does not automatically remove: emoji CSS, the DNS-prefetch hint, the linked fallback file or TinyMCE’s wpemoji plugin.
  • It may not cover: administration screens, the block editor or other editor contexts that register their own assets.
  • It does not erase: Unicode emoji characters already stored in content, comments or user names.

Hook registration can differ between WordPress versions and implementations. If you need admin or editor cleanup, use the documented plugin route or confirm each additional callback against the WordPress version running on your site before deploying custom code.

Option 2: install Disable Emojis for complete cleanup

Choose this route when you want one maintained switch for both visitors and administrators, rather than maintaining several callbacks yourself.

  1. In the dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for Disable Emojis, verify that it is the plugin documented at the official WordPress.org listing, and select Install Now.
  3. Select Activate.
  4. Alternatively, download the plugin package, extract its folder and upload that folder to /wp-content/plugins/; then activate it under Plugins → Installed Plugins.
  5. Purge every cache layer and test both a logged-out front-end page and an administrator/editor screen.

Assets the plugin removes

Area What is removed What remains
Front end Emoji detection script and emoji styles Native emoji rendering in browsers that support it
Administration Admin-side emoji detection assets Normal dashboard and editor operation
Resource hints DNS prefetching to s.w.org Other resource hints generated by WordPress or plugins
TinyMCE The wpemoji plugin integration Text emoticons such as :), according to the plugin documentation

The plugin documentation states that modern-browser emojis still display and that text emoticons such as :) continue to work. The trade-off is fallback support: browsers without built-in emoji support will no longer receive WordPress’s replacement behavior.

Option 3: enable an existing optimization plugin’s setting

If your site already uses Autoptimize, open its settings and locate the documented remove emojis option. The feature strips the inline CSS, inline JavaScript and linked JavaScript file that WordPress adds for emoji support.

Do not enable the same cleanup in multiple plugins. After changing the setting:

  1. Save the optimization plugin’s configuration.
  2. Clear its generated cache and any separate page or CDN cache.
  3. View the public page source and search for wp-emoji, wpemoji and the emoji resource URL.
  4. Open the editor and a representative page in an older browser if legacy-browser support is part of your requirements.

Side-by-side decision guide

Method Scope Maintenance Main trade-off
Site-specific plugin Usually front end; can be extended carefully Small code file you control Admin and TinyMCE assets need separate, version-checked handling
Child theme callback Usually front end Travels with the child theme Changing themes or making a PHP mistake can remove or interrupt the change
Disable Emojis Front end, admin, resource hint and TinyMCE integration Plugin updates and activation Legacy browsers lose fallback support
Autoptimize setting Assets documented by that optimizer Managed in an existing optimization dashboard Do not duplicate the same cleanup elsewhere

There is no separate hosting or licensing cost identified for the WordPress.org plugin options. The practical cost is operational: testing, cache purges and deciding whether older browsers must remain supported.

How to verify that emojis are disabled

Check the rendered front end

  1. Open a page while logged out, preferably in a private window that bypasses an administrator toolbar.
  2. Use View Page Source or browser developer tools and search for print_emoji_detection_script, wp-emoji, wpemoji and s.w.org.
  3. In the Network panel, reload with the cache disabled and look for emoji-related JavaScript, CSS or requests to the WordPress.org resource host.
  4. Repeat on a page type that uses comments, a search result and a post containing emoji characters; these confirm that content rendering still behaves as intended.

Check administration and editing

If you selected the plugin, sign in and open the block editor or Classic Editor, then edit a disposable draft containing an emoji and a :) emoticon. Save the draft, preview it and confirm that no editor error, JavaScript error or missing toolbar behavior appears. A front-end-only callback should not be assumed to have removed admin assets.

Measure the result rather than relying on file counts

Record a baseline for the same URL, template and cache state, then repeat after the change using representative mobile hardware or an equivalent mobile network profile. Compare FCP and LCP along with total requests and page weight. Keep the change only if it helps your site’s actual bottleneck; a tiny script removal can be lost in normal measurement variance when images, fonts or third-party code dominate the page.

Run several repetitions rather than trusting one score. Keep the URL, logged-in state, cache state and test device consistent. If a CDN serves different HTML to different regions, test a real visitor path as well as an origin request. The goal is not merely to make an emoji string disappear from source; it is to confirm that the intended asset and connection hint are gone without changing visible content or editor behavior.

Compatibility and privacy trade-offs

Modern browsers versus legacy browsers

Modern browsers generally draw emoji glyphs themselves, which is why removing the loader does not make emoji characters disappear for most visitors. The cost is support for older browsers that depend on WordPress’s detection and fallback path. If your audience includes such browsers, test them explicitly or leave the loader enabled.

Visitors versus administrators

A one-line front-end callback addresses public output only. The plugin approach also removes admin and editor assets. Decide the scope before choosing a method: reducing a few public-page bytes does not justify breaking an editor workflow your staff uses every day.

DNS prefetch and external connection behavior

Disable Emojis removes WordPress’s DNS-prefetch hint for s.w.org. That reduces this specific browser hint and related connection behavior; it does not turn your entire site into a no-third-party-request environment. Auditing analytics, fonts, embeds and other plugins remains a separate task.

Troubleshooting common failures

The emoji code still appears after activation

  • Clear page, object, server and CDN caches; cached HTML can outlive a successful code change.
  • Confirm that the plugin is active and that the code is in the active child theme, not an inactive parent or unused theme directory.
  • Check the actual rendered source while logged out. An administrator preview can be generated by a different hook path.
  • Look for a second optimization plugin that re-adds or rewrites emoji assets. Keep one owner for the cleanup.

Emoji characters show as empty boxes

This indicates a browser or operating system without a usable native emoji font, or a legacy browser that relied on WordPress’s fallback. Re-enable the loader, remove the custom callback or deactivate the plugin, then retest. Do not disable the feature on audiences for whom emoji legibility is essential.

The editor behaves differently from the front end

The minimal callback is front-end scoped. Use the complete plugin if you specifically need admin/editor cleanup, and verify the current plugin and WordPress versions before adding custom admin callbacks. Follow WordPress’s separation between front-end and administration script hooks rather than removing every script globally.

Performance scores do not change

That result is normal on a fast device or a page whose largest costs are images, fonts, layout shifts or third-party scripts. WordPress Core found the effect largely imperceptible on high-end and mid-range hardware. Compare repeated runs under the same conditions and keep the change only when it produces a meaningful improvement or meets a specific resource/privacy goal.

When disabling emojis is worth doing

  • Good fit: a high-volume site serving low-end mobile users, where every small main-thread and request reduction is measured and useful.
  • Good fit: a site with a policy to remove unnecessary resource hints, including the s.w.org DNS-prefetch hint.
  • Usually low priority: a site already dominated by large images, web fonts, advertising, video embeds or slow server response.
  • Keep the loader: when legacy-browser compatibility is more important than a small optimization, or when you cannot test the editor and public pages after changing it.

For most WordPress 6.9 sites, disabling emojis is safe for modern visitors but modest in effect. Treat it as one measured cleanup in a performance budget, not as a replacement for optimizing the assets and server work that control most real-world load time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I disable emojis in WordPress?

For front-end-only removal, place remove_action( 'wp_head', 'print_emoji_detection_script', 7 ); inside an init callback in a site-specific plugin or child theme. For front-end and admin cleanup, activate the Disable Emojis plugin instead.

Will removing WordPress emojis make my site faster?

It can produce a small improvement, especially on low-tier mobile devices. WordPress measured about 3 KB of former inline script, roughly 7% FCP and 4% LCP improvement from deferring the loader, and another 1% to 2% when moving it to the footer under separate Fast 4G testing. Results vary and are often imperceptible on high-end or mid-range hardware.

Can I remove the emoji script without breaking emoji characters?

Yes for modern browsers, which render emoji natively. The characters remain in posts, comments and titles. The trade-off is that older browsers without native emoji support lose WordPress’s fallback behavior.

Does the one-line callback remove every emoji-related asset?

No. It targets the front-end detection action only. Emoji CSS, the DNS-prefetch hint, linked fallback file and TinyMCE integration may remain, and administration screens may use separate hooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Disable Emojis affect the WordPress editor?

The plugin removes administration detection assets and the wpemoji TinyMCE plugin while retaining normal editor operation and text emoticons such as :). Test the block or Classic Editor after activation.

Why do I still see emoji code after disabling it?

Usually a cache is serving old HTML, the code is in an inactive theme, or another optimization plugin is managing the same hooks. Purge every cache layer, inspect logged-out source and keep only one emoji-cleanup method.

Should I disable emojis on every WordPress site?

No. It is most defensible when low-end mobile performance or removal of the s.w.org DNS-prefetch hint is a measured goal. Keep the loader when legacy-browser support or an untested editor workflow is more important.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: WordPress 6.9 already defers emoji loading, so disabling it is a modest, targeted cleanup. Use a site-specific callback for front-end-only removal, Disable Emojis for complete front-end/admin and resource-hint cleanup, and measure FCP, LCP and compatibility on your actual devices before keeping the change.
