To disable every mod in tModLoader, open the Mods menu, choose Disable All, close tModLoader, and launch it again. If tModLoader cannot reach that menu, hold Shift while it starts or remove enabled.json from the saves Mods folder, then restart. Dedicated servers require the server process to be stopped before you change its enabled list or modpack; a genuinely vanilla server requires the separate Terraria dedicated-server executable.

Choose the procedure that matches your server
“Disable mods” can mean three different things in Terraria. You might want a quick, reversible test on a local Host & Play world; you might be operating a dedicated tModLoader server; or you might want to leave tModLoader completely and run vanilla Terraria. The correct steps differ, and disabling content mods in tModLoader does not turn the tModLoader runtime into vanilla Terraria.

Disable all mods in the tModLoader client or Host & Play
This is the normal method when you launch the world from the game client or host a multiplayer session from that client.
- Launch tModLoader.
- Open the Mods menu.
- Choose Disable All. This changes the enabled set rather than uninstalling the mod files.
- Close tModLoader completely.
- Launch tModLoader again and test the world or multiplayer session.
The restart matters because tModLoader loads its active mod set during startup. Returning to the title screen without closing the process does not provide the same clean reload.

Disabling mods is reversible. When you are ready to restore the previous setup, open the Mods menu, enable the required entries, and restart again. If you are troubleshooting a crash, keep the first no-mod launch separate from the later re-enabling work so you know whether the clean startup itself solved the problem.
When the Mods menu will not open
A broken mod can prevent the menu from becoming usable. tModLoader documents two recovery paths that avoid relying on the in-game list.
Start while holding Shift
- Close any running tModLoader process.
- Hold Shift while tModLoader starts.
- Allow the launch to complete with mod loading skipped.
- Once the client opens, close it and start it normally to confirm that the startup problem is gone.
This is a launch-time bypass for recovery. It does not remove the downloaded .tmod files or permanently select a new modpack.
Remove the saved enabled list
- Exit tModLoader.
- Open the saves
Modsfolder used by that installation. - Make a backup copy of
enabled.json. - Delete
enabled.json. - Start tModLoader again.
Deleting this file is a configuration reset, not an uninstall. Keep the backup so you can restore the former enabled list if the problem turns out to be unrelated to a particular mod. If the client still fails, use the Shift-start path and inspect the logs before changing additional files.

Disable mods on a dedicated tModLoader server
Do not edit the active mod files while the dedicated server is running. Stop the server first, make a backup, change the configuration, and then start the process again. The exact launcher can vary by installation; the documented shell launcher is start-tModLoaderServer.sh.
1. Stop the process and make a rollback copy
Stop the server normally and verify that the process has exited. Back up the world files and server configuration before changing the mod set. A backup is especially important when the same world has been opened with modded content and you are considering a vanilla runtime later.

2. Identify the server’s mod controls
Inspect the server’s Mods directory and the files used by the tModLoader management tooling:
enabled.jsonrecords the enabled mod list.install.txtis used by the management script when it installs or updates mods..tmodfiles are the downloaded mod packages present in the directory.serverconfig.txtcan select a modpack with themodpack=setting.modpath=identifies the Mods directory used by the server configuration.
Disabling a mod normally means changing the enabled selection; deleting every .tmod file is a separate, destructive cleanup and is not required for a temporary no-mod test.

3. Select an empty or reduced set
Replace the enabled list with the desired set according to the format expected by your tModLoader installation. To run a no-mod troubleshooting session, use an empty enabled set. To keep only a few server-side mods, leave those entries enabled and remove the others from the active list. Preserve the original file outside the live directory so you can restore it exactly.
4. Select a modpack instead, when appropriate
If your server uses named modpacks, set the required value in serverconfig.txt with modpack=. The selected pack determines which list the server loads; changing individual files while a modpack selection remains active can produce an unexpected result. Confirm the configured modpath= points at the directory you actually edited.
5. Prevent management-script changes when necessary
The tModLoader management script documents the --no-mods argument. Use it when the objective is to skip mod installation or updates during a management-script run. This option prevents that run from managing mods; it does not by itself convert a tModLoader server into a vanilla server and does not replace an already enabled list unless your startup workflow also changes that list.
6. Start and verify
Start the server again with start-tModLoaderServer.sh or your configured launcher. Watch the startup output for the selected mod set, then connect with a client configured for the same runtime. If the server starts but a player cannot join, check ModSide requirements and both sides’ logs rather than immediately deleting more files.

Docker deployments: change the mounted files, then restart
In the documented Docker layout, the Terraria directory sits beside the compose files and contains the server’s enabled.json, install.txt, serverconfig.txt, world files, and .tmod packages. Edit the files in that Terraria directory, not an unrelated path inside a temporary container layer.
- Stop or pause the compose service according to your deployment procedure.
- Back up the world, configuration, and current mod files.
- Change
enabled.json,install.txt, or themodpack=andmodpath=settings as required. - Restart the service so the container reads the changed files.
- Rebuild the container when the image itself or the managed installation needs updating; a simple restart is sufficient for ordinary changes to the mounted mod files.
After the service returns, verify the container logs and connect with a client that matches the resulting mod set. A host-side edit has no effect if the compose configuration points the service at a different directory.

With every content mod disabled, the server is still running the tModLoader runtime. Choose this state for troubleshooting or for a temporarily empty mod set. Choose the separate Terraria dedicated-server executable when you need a genuinely vanilla server.
Use a separate vanilla process
- Stop the tModLoader server completely.
- Prepare the vanilla Terraria dedicated-server executable and its vanilla configuration.
- Point the vanilla process at the intended vanilla world and configuration.
- Start the vanilla server and test with an unmodded Terraria client.
Keep independent backups of the world and configuration. The tModLoader guides describe launch paths and configuration, but they do not promise that every modded-world transition is lossless. Mod-added items, tiles, NPCs, or other content may not have a meaningful vanilla equivalent, so do not treat switching runtimes as a guaranteed reversible conversion.

Why clients may still have mods after the server list changes
tModLoader assigns each mod a ModSide classification that controls synchronization. A server change therefore does not automatically remove every mod from every player’s installation.

| Client | The mod runs on the client. Removing it from the server does not disable the player’s local copy. |
| Server | The mod runs on the server and is not sent to clients. |
| NoSync | The mod is not automatically downloaded or disabled through multiplayer synchronization. |
When you remove a Both mod from the server, have players remove or disable the corresponding client entry before reconnecting. When the entry is Client or NoSync, players may need to change their own Mods menu even though the server list is already correct. A server administrator cannot reliably clean up those local-only entries from the server.
A safe troubleshooting sequence
Use the smallest reversible change that answers the question you are investigating.
- Back up the world and configuration.
- Disable all mods and restart the relevant client or server.
- Reproduce the original problem with the same world and connection pattern.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable mods in small groups rather than all at once.
- Restart after each group and record which change affects the result.
- For multiplayer-only failures, inspect both client and server logs. The tModLoader FAQ notes that logs commonly identify the mod involved.
- Restore the known-good enabled list when testing is complete.
If the game still crashes with no mods
A no-mod launch rules out the enabled content set but not every other cause. Confirm that you actually restarted the process, that the server is reading the Mods directory and configuration you edited, and that the client and server are using the intended runtime. Recheck the logs before deleting downloaded packages or changing the world.
If the server starts but players cannot connect
Check whether the players are using tModLoader or vanilla Terraria, then compare the active Both-side mods. A client-only mod can remain installed without being supplied by the server, while a server-only mod will not appear in the client’s download list. Compare the server’s enabled list with each player’s local list and read both logs for the first reported mismatch.

The management script or a selected modpack may be repopulating the list. Check install.txt, the modpack= value in serverconfig.txt, and the directory named by modpath=. If the management run should not install or update anything, invoke it with --no-mods as documented by tModLoader.
Which approach should you use?
- Temporary diagnosis on a local game: use Disable All, restart, and re-enable in small groups.
- The Mods menu is inaccessible: use the Shift-start bypass; if needed, back up and delete
enabled.json. - A dedicated tModLoader server needs a different set: stop it, back up the files, change
enabled.jsonor the selected modpack, and start it again. - Automatic installs or updates must stop: add
--no-modsto the management-script run. - A Docker server needs the change: edit the mounted Terraria directory, restart the service, and rebuild only when the image or managed installation requires it.
- You need a true vanilla server: launch the separate Terraria dedicated-server executable with a vanilla configuration and a carefully backed-up world.
The tModLoader FAQ’s basic instruction is to visit the Mods menu and click Disable All. For dedicated deployments, the decisive details are which directory the server reads, which list or modpack is selected, and whether a management script is allowed to install or update mods.
