What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start at the server and move outward: confirm that IPv6 is enabled, verify that the interface has more than a fe80::/10 link-local address, inspect the IPv6 routes and default gateway, test progressively farther destinations, and then check forwarding and firewall policy. This sequence distinguishes a disabled protocol from a missing prefix, a bad route, blocked ICMPv6, or an application that is simply not listening on IPv6.

The same method applies to a game server, voice server, web host, or internal service. Do not change application settings until the host can reach an IPv6 peer and an external IPv6 address.

Use this order of operations
- Confirm that IPv6 is enabled on the operating system and network adapter.
- Check that the expected global unicast or unique-local address is present; a link-local address alone is insufficient.
- Inspect the connected route and default route.
- Test loopback, a link-local neighbor, a local global/unique-local peer, and an external IPv6 destination.
- Trace the failing destination and inspect host, LAN, upstream, and security-group firewalls.
- Only after network reachability works, troubleshoot DNS, service binding, and game-server configuration.
Record the result of each step. The first scope at which a test fails usually identifies the faulty layer.
1. Confirm that IPv6 is enabled
Linux: module and sysctl checks
Linux can disable IPv6 globally at the module level or independently on each interface. A module parameter of disable=1 disables all IPv6 functionality, prevents IPv6 addresses and sockets, and requires a reboot before IPv6 can be enabled again. The per-interface sysctl disable_ipv6=1 prevents IPv6 on that interface.

cat /sys/module/ipv6/parameters/disable
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6
for f in /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/disable_ipv6; do echo "$f: $(cat "$f")"; done
A value of 1 means disabled. Check autoconfiguration as well:
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.all.autoconf
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.default.autoconf
for f in /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/autoconf; do echo "$f: $(cat "$f")"; done
When autoconfiguration is set to 0, an interface may retain only loopback and link-local addresses. That is appropriate for some static configurations but will prevent router-advertisement-based addressing.
Windows: keep the protocol bound
Modern Windows treats IPv6 as a required component. Microsoft advises against disabling IPv6, unbinding it from adapters, or casually changing the DisabledComponents registry value because Windows components can fail when the protocol is removed. In the adapter’s properties, ensure Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) remains selected.
Use an elevated PowerShell prompt to inspect bindings and addresses:
Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6
Get-NetIPConfiguration
Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv6
If IPv6 was disabled through the registry or an adapter binding, restore the normal binding and restart the adapter or computer as required by the change. Do not use a blanket disable as a first-line fix.
2. Check address acquisition
Recognize the address types
- Link-local (
fe80::/10): automatically present on IPv6 interfaces and valid only on the local link. It proves that the interface has an IPv6 stack, not that Internet routing works. - Global unicast: the address type normally used for Internet-reachable IPv6. Your provider or upstream router must delegate an appropriate prefix.
- Unique local (typically
fc00::/7): intended for private networks. It can work between sites that have routing, but it is not a substitute for a globally routed address when a game server must accept Internet clients.
Linux address inspection
ip -6 addr show dev eth0
ip -6 addr show scope global
ip -6 addr show scope link
Replace eth0 with the actual interface. Look for the prefix supplied by your router, hosting provider, or static configuration. If you see only fe80::, investigate why no global or private prefix arrived.

If the expected prefix is missing
Check the mechanism that should deliver the address:
- Router advertisements (RA): verify that the LAN router is advertising a prefix and that the host accepts autoconfiguration.
- DHCPv6: confirm the client is on the correct interface or VLAN and that the DHCPv6 server has an available lease or delegated prefix.
- Static assignment: verify the exact address, prefix length, gateway, and whether the provider requires a routed or on-link prefix.
- Provider delegation: confirm that the upstream has delegated IPv6 to the server, virtual machine, or customer router rather than only assigning an address to the edge device.
On a hosted server, an address shown in a control panel is not proof that the guest operating system received it. Compare the provider’s documented prefix and gateway with the guest’s interface state.
3. Inspect routes, gateways, and forwarding
Linux routing table
ip -6 route show
ip -6 route get 2001:db8::1
You normally need a connected route for the local prefix and a default route, shown as default via … dev …, for Internet destinations. A global address with no default route can communicate locally but cannot reach remote networks. A default route pointing to the wrong interface or gateway causes the same symptom.

route print -6
netstat -r
netsh interface ipv6 show routes
Verify a route for the local subnet and an appropriate ::/0 default route. Microsoft also documents route management, neighbor-cache inspection, and destination-cache inspection through netsh interface ipv6. Stale entries can survive an interface change; compare the route’s interface index with the adapter that owns the address.
Forwarding is for routers, not ordinary hosts
Forwarding must be enabled when a server routes packets between interfaces, such as a gateway, firewall, container host, or VPN router. It is not required merely for a host to reach the Internet.
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.default.forwarding
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.eth0.forwarding
Enable forwarding only on a machine intended to route traffic, and apply the setting through the operating system’s persistent network configuration. Enabling it on an ordinary server can alter router-advertisement behavior and create an unintended transit path.
On Windows Server, inspect the interface and forwarding state with:

4. Test from the smallest scope to the largest
Run tests in this order and stop at the first failure. Use numeric addresses while diagnosing so that DNS does not hide a routing problem.
Loopback
ping -6 ::1
On Windows, ping ::1 performs the equivalent test. Failure indicates a local IPv6 stack or operating-system problem, not an upstream outage.
Link-local neighbor
Find a neighbor’s link-local address with ip -6 neigh on Linux or netsh interface ipv6 show neighbors on Windows. A link-local destination requires an interface zone identifier:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsping -6 fe80::1234%eth0
On Windows, use the interface index, for example ping fe80::1234%12. If this test fails, check the cable or virtual switch, VLAN membership, neighbor discovery, and local ICMPv6 rules.
Local global or unique-local peer
ping -6 2001:db8:1234::20
# or, for a private routed network
ping -6 fd12:3456:789a::20
Failure here points to the address, prefix, LAN routing, router advertisements, or a local firewall. A successful local test proves that the interface and local prefix work, but not that upstream Internet routing works.
External IPv6 destination
Use a known IPv6 address supplied by your network team or provider. If local peers respond but the external destination does not, inspect the default route, upstream router, delegated prefix, provider edge, and egress firewall.

Trace the failing path
traceroute -6 2001:db8::1
tracert /6 2001:db8::1
Some hops may not answer trace probes even when they forward traffic, so an asterisk is evidence of filtered diagnostics, not automatically a broken route. Look for the last responding hop and compare it with the expected gateway.

Interpretation guide
| Last successful test | Most likely scope | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
None; even ::1 fails |
Local IPv6 stack | Module parameter, sysctls, adapter binding, operating-system errors |
| Loopback only | Interface or local policy | Interface state, VLAN, neighbor discovery, ICMPv6 firewall |
| Link-local peer | Prefix or LAN routing | Global/ULA address, RA or DHCPv6, connected route, LAN firewall |
| Local global/ULA peer | Upstream path | Default route, gateway, provider delegation, egress filtering |
| External address, but application fails | Service layer | DNS AAAA selection, bind address, listening port, service and security-group rules |
5. Check firewalls and ICMPv6 policy
IPv6 relies on ICMPv6 for neighbor discovery, router advertisements, path-MTU discovery, and error reporting. A rule set that allows TCP or UDP but blocks required ICMPv6 can make an apparently correct configuration fail intermittently or completely.
Host firewall
- Review IPv6 rules separately from IPv4 rules; an IPv4 allow rule does not automatically allow IPv6.
- Permit the ICMPv6 types required by your operating system and network design, especially neighbor-discovery traffic.
- Confirm that the service is listening on the IPv6 socket and that its port is allowed on the IPv6 address.
On Linux, inspect the active nftables or ip6tables policy rather than only a configuration file. On Windows, review Windows Defender Firewall inbound and outbound rules for the active profile. Microsoft documents cases in which policy settings prevent local rule merging, so a rule that exists on the host may not be effective.
Upstream and cloud controls
Check router ACLs, provider firewalls, cloud security groups, and perimeter appliances. A host can pass every local test while an upstream egress rule drops IPv6. If you temporarily disable a firewall for diagnosis, perform one controlled test, re-enable it immediately, and replace the test with narrowly scoped IPv6 and ICMPv6 rules.

A hostname may return both an A record and an AAAA record. Test the AAAA address directly before blaming DNS:

nslookup -type=AAAA example.net
curl -6 https://example.net/
On Windows, use Resolve-DnsName example.net -Type AAAA. If the AAAA address is reachable by numeric ping or trace but the application chooses the wrong address, inspect address-selection policy and the application’s happy-eyeballs or fallback behavior. Modern Windows normally favors IPv6 global unicast addresses under its RFC 3484-style selection policy.
For a game server, publish an AAAA record only after the service is reachable on IPv6 and the listening port is allowed through every firewall. A DNS record cannot create a route that the provider has not supplied.

7. Verify the service is actually listening on IPv6
Successful IPv6 ping does not prove that the game or daemon accepts IPv6 connections. Check listening sockets and bindings:
ss -lntup
ss -lnup
Look for an IPv6 wildcard such as [::]:PORT or the intended IPv6 address. A service bound only to 0.0.0.0 may accept IPv4 while refusing IPv6. Some applications expose separate “listen address,” “bind address,” or “enable IPv6” settings; use the application’s current documentation and restart it after changing the binding.
On Windows, use:
netstat -ano -p tcp
netstat -ano -p udp
Map the process ID to the service, then test the actual port from an IPv6-capable client. If the socket is listening but connections fail, return to firewall and security-group rules rather than changing DNS.
8. Fix the fault at the layer that proves it
| Evidence | Remediation | Scope and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
| IPv6 disabled globally or on one interface | Restore the module/sysctl setting or adapter binding, then restart as required | Host-wide or interface-specific; persistent change |
| Only link-local address present | Repair RA, DHCPv6, static assignment, VLAN membership, or provider delegation | LAN or upstream; may affect multiple hosts |
| Address present, no default route | Correct the gateway, RA, DHCPv6 route information, or static route | Host or router; persistent network change |
| Local peer works, external peer fails | Repair upstream routing, delegated prefix, provider edge, or egress ACL | Provider/LAN; coordinate before changing the host |
| Routes work, port fails | Allow the IPv6 port and required ICMPv6 through host and upstream firewalls | Service/security policy; narrowly scoped and reversible |
| IPv6 works by address, hostname fails | Correct AAAA records or address-selection/application preference | DNS or application; low-risk change |
Prefer a runtime test or a single-interface correction before a host-wide change. Preserve the evidence that justified the change: route output, trace results, firewall logs, and the exact address and prefix.
Should you disable IPv6 if IPv4 works?
Usually, no. Microsoft explicitly recommends not disabling IPv6 or unbinding it from interfaces on current Windows because system components can depend on it. Disabling it can also break WSL networking. If the real requirement is to prefer IPv4 temporarily, use address-selection or prefix-policy settings instead of removing IPv6. Microsoft’s documented preference approach uses the DisabledComponents value 0x20 to prefer IPv4 over IPv6 without fully disabling the protocol.
On Linux, disabling IPv6 may be justified only by a documented security or architecture requirement, after confirming that applications, management tools, containers, and monitoring do not depend on it. Treat it as a deliberate design decision, not a response to one failed ping.
Game-server checklist
- The host has a global IPv6 address from the intended prefix, not only
fe80::. - The host has a connected route and a working default route.
- Local and external IPv6 tests succeed from a separate client network.
- The server process listens on the IPv6 address and correct TCP or UDP port.
- Host firewall, provider firewall, router ACLs, and security groups allow the port and necessary ICMPv6.
- The DNS AAAA record matches the current address and is not published before reachability is verified.
- Clients have an IPv6 path; an IPv6-only hostname will not be reachable by an IPv4-only player.
- After any fix, retest from outside the server’s LAN and keep IPv4 testing separate so one protocol does not mask the other.
When to contact the upstream provider
Escalate with specific evidence when the operating system is enabled, the expected address is configured, and local routing works but the default route or external path is absent. Provide the server’s interface name, prefix length, gateway, ip -6 route or route print -6 output, trace results, and the time of testing. Ask whether the provider has delegated the prefix to the correct server or VLAN, whether IPv6 egress is filtered, and which next-hop address should be used. This is more actionable than reporting that “IPv6 does not work.”
Quick Recap
A concise decision tree
- No IPv6 address at all: check module/sysctl settings or the Windows adapter binding.
- Only
fe80::: repair RA, DHCPv6, static configuration, VLAN, or prefix delegation. - Global address but no default route: repair gateway or route advertisement.
- Local peer fails: inspect neighbor discovery, prefix, interface, and LAN firewall.
- Local peer works but external fails: inspect upstream routing, provider delegation, and egress policy.
- External ping works but the game fails: inspect AAAA records, service binding, port rules, and application IPv6 support.
