Set the server option name_tags to false. In a hosting control panel, stop the server, open its Truck Simulator settings, change Name Tags to Disabled or false, save, and restart. If your host does not expose that control, edit server_config.sii, change name_tags: true to name_tags: false, save the file, and restart the server.

What the setting does
Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS) dedicated servers use the name_tags option to control player name tags. A value of false disables them for that server; true leaves them enabled. This is a server-side setting, so changing a local game option will not alter a multiplayer server that you do not administer.

The setting applies to the server configuration rather than to a particular player or truck. Once the server has loaded the updated configuration, connected players receive the server’s new behavior after reconnecting or after the server session refreshes. Stopping the process before editing and restarting it afterward avoids the running server overwriting your change or continuing to use the old value.
Method 1: Change Name Tags in your hosting panel
A control-panel toggle is the simplest route when your host provides one. The exact menu names depend on the host and on when its panel was updated, so look for a Truck Simulator server-settings page rather than relying on one provider’s exact labels.

General panel procedure
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s Stop, Shut Down, or equivalent control and wait until the status shows that the process is offline. Do not edit a live configuration if the panel warns that the file is locked.
- Open the server configuration area. Depending on the host, this may be called Config Files, Server Settings, Basic Settings, Startup, or Truck Simulator settings.
- Find Name Tags. The control may be a drop-down, a slider, or a true/false field. Set it to Disabled, Off, or
false. - Save or apply the change. Wait for the panel to confirm that the setting was written. Closing the page without saving leaves the previous value in place.
- Start or restart the server. A restart is required for the dedicated server to read the new configuration. If the panel has separate Save and Restart buttons, use both in that order.
- Verify in a session. Join with a test account or ask a player to confirm that the overhead name labels no longer appear. Reconnect after the restart if a client was already online.

These examples show why the same setting can appear in different places. A panel may generate server_config.sii for you, or it may pass the value as a startup parameter. The result is the same when the server ultimately starts with name_tags: false.
Method 2: Edit server_config.sii directly
Use a file edit when your host has no Name Tags control, when the panel keeps restoring the wrong value, or when you administer the server yourself. Make the edit while the server is stopped.

- Stop the ETS2 or ATS server from the hosting panel, service manager, or container supervisor. Confirm that it has fully exited.
- Make a backup. Download or duplicate the current
server_config.siibefore changing it. The backup gives you a known-good file if a syntax error prevents startup. - Open the file in a plain-text editor. Avoid a word processor that can add formatting or change quotation marks.
- Search for the exact key
name_tags. Use the editor’s Find command rather than scanning a long configuration manually. - Change only the Boolean value. Replace
name_tags: truewithname_tags: false. Keep the key name, colon, spacing style, and surrounding configuration intact. - Save as plain text with the original filename,
server_config.sii. Check that your editor did not append an extra extension such as.txt. - Start or restart the server. The dedicated server reads the file at startup; leaving the process running will not apply the edit.
- Check the result. Inspect the file again after startup if your panel rewrites configuration files. If it still shows
false, connect to the server and verify the visual result.
Expected line
The relevant entry should look like this:
name_tags: falseIf the line appears more than once, change the active setting used by your server’s configuration and remove accidental duplicate entries only when you understand how that host generates the file. A panel-generated file may overwrite manual edits on the next save, so use the panel field instead when it is available.

Finding the file
File locations vary by host, operating system, installation method, and whether the server is running in a container. One guide returned for this setting describes a path written as local > share > Euro Truck Simulator 2 > server_config.sii. That path is lower-confidence and should not be treated as a universal location, particularly for ATS or managed hosting. Use your host’s file manager, the server’s documented configuration directory, or a recursive search for the filename. Do not create a second file in a guessed directory: the server may continue reading the original one.
Docker and self-hosted convoy servers
For Docker-based ETS2/ATS convoy servers built from the LsHallo ets2-dedicated-convoy-server project, the README lists the environment variable ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS. Set that variable to false in the container’s environment, then recreate or restart the container so the entrypoint generates or passes the updated server configuration.

The exact Compose file and restart command depend on your deployment, so the key checks are that the variable is attached to the correct server container and that the container is recreated with the new environment. Editing a generated file inside a running container may be lost when the container is replaced.

ETS2 versus ATS: is the procedure different?
The setting name supplied for this feature is the same: name_tags. The control-panel route therefore follows the same logic for both games, although a host may label the product “Truck Simulator,” “ETS2,” “ATS,” or “Convoy.” Select the settings file belonging to the correct server instance if you run both games.
Do not assume that a file path shown for an ETS2 installation is also the path for ATS. Installation layouts and provider file managers differ. Search for the active instance’s server_config.sii and confirm the server identity in the panel before editing.
How to confirm the change worked
- Check the saved value. The panel should show Disabled, Off, or
false; the file should containname_tags: false. - Confirm a complete restart. A page refresh is not enough. The server process must stop and start, or the Docker container must be recreated or restarted.
- Reconnect a client. Players who were connected during the change can retain the previous session state until they leave and join again.
- Test with another player if possible. This distinguishes a server setting from a local display, mod, or UI issue.
- Check after a panel restart. Some managed panels regenerate configuration from startup fields. If the file returns to
true, set the panel’s Name Tags field rather than editing the generated file.
Troubleshooting when tags still appear
The option is missing from the panel
Open the file-management or configuration section and use the direct-edit method. If you cannot access files, ask the host whether the feature is supported on your server plan or whether it is controlled from a Startup or Basic Settings page under a different label.

The panel says Disabled, but the file says true
The panel may not have saved the change, or you may be viewing a different server instance. Stop the server, select the correct Truck Simulator settings file, save the value again, and restart. If the panel writes a generated file at startup, its startup field is authoritative; changing a generated copy will be overwritten.
The file contains false, but tags remain
Confirm that you edited the file used by the running instance, not a backup, template, or another game’s directory. Verify that the server completed a full restart and that the client reconnected afterward. If a host synchronizes settings from a web panel, make the change there so the next deployment does not restore true.
The server fails to start after editing
Stop the process, restore the backup, and start again. Then repeat the change carefully, altering only the Boolean value on the existing name_tags line. Check for accidental extra extensions, smart quotes, deleted punctuation, or edits made while the panel was simultaneously regenerating the file. If the backup also fails, use the host’s configuration restore or support process rather than guessing at additional settings.

Only some players report seeing tags
First establish whether everyone is on the same server instance and whether those players reconnected after the restart. A mixed report can indicate that one group joined an old process or a different endpoint. Have affected players leave, reconnect to the server’s current address, and verify the server’s saved value.
The host’s instructions do not match the current interface
Provider guides can become outdated; Shockbyte explicitly identifies its published workflow as belonging to an older panel. Treat the labels as examples, not as a guarantee of the current layout. Look for the same setting under Config Files, Basic Settings, Startup, or Truck Simulator settings, and consult the host’s current documentation if none of those areas contains it.

Permissions and server ownership
You can change name tags only on a server you administer. On a public ETS2 or ATS server owned by another person or organization, the setting is controlled by that server’s owner or hosting administrator. A client-side graphics, interface, or user-profile change cannot force the dedicated server to hide tags for everyone.
If you are an operator but lack a file editor, request that the owner set name_tags to false and restart the instance. Include the server identifier so the administrator does not change a separate ETS2 or ATS installation.
Safe change checklist
- Identify the exact ETS2 or ATS instance you intend to change.
- Stop the server and wait for a confirmed offline state.
- Back up
server_config.siibefore manual editing. - Set only
name_tagstofalse. - Save through the panel or as plain text with the original filename.
- Restart the server or recreate the Docker container.
- Reconnect a client and verify that name tags are gone.
- Check that the value remains
