To use MySQL with a Minecraft plugin, create a database and a dedicated user, collect the connection details, configure the plugin to use MySQL, then save and restart the server. What MySQL does for a Minecraft server
A plugin stores information somewhere so it can retrieve it later. Some plugins use a local file or database by default; others can be configured to store data in MySQL instead. When configured to connect to the same MySQL database, multiple servers can work with shared plugin data. That can be useful on a network running through BungeeCord or another multi-server setup.

You configure a particular plugin to use the database, and the plugin reads and writes the data it manages there. A database configured for one plugin does not automatically move or share data for every other plugin.
For a single small server, the default file-based or SQLite storage is generally sufficient. LuckPerms, for example, uses an H2 database by default and does not need configuration to use that local storage. Its official wiki says a remote database such as MySQL is needed when running multiple servers in a network or planning to do so.

Before you begin
- Confirm that the plugin supports MySQL and check its documentation for the configuration format used by your installed version.
- Decide where the database will be hosted: through your game-server provider or on a machine you control.
- Have access to the game panel or database server so you can create a database and a separate SQL user.
- Be ready to record the database hostname, port, database name, username, and password. The plugin may call these fields by different names.
- Back up relevant plugin data before changing storage settings or attempting a migration.
Set up the database and user
If your game host provides a database panel
- Open the game panel’s Databases section.
- Choose NEW DATABASE and create a database for the plugin.
- If the panel asks which connections are allowed, follow the host’s instructions. One host guide says to leave its “connections from” field empty to allow connections from the game server; that behavior is panel-specific, so do not assume an empty field has the same meaning elsewhere.
- Create or assign a database user and note the credentials. If the panel creates the database and user together, record both sets of details it displays.
If you manage the database machine
Create a database and a SQL user, then grant that user access only to the database the plugin needs. An MPDB guide uses mpdb as an example database name; it is an example, not a required name. Use a distinct database or user for the plugin rather than reusing an administrative account. The exact commands and permissions depend on your database setup, so follow the documentation for the system you administer.

Before editing the plugin, gather these values from the host panel or database administrator:

Do not treat the Minecraft server’s address as automatically being the database hostname. A hosted database may have a separate address, and the host may restrict which machines can connect. Likewise, do not copy an address from an example without checking whether it applies to your setup.
Point the plugin at MySQL
- Open the plugin’s configuration folder, often through the server panel’s Files tab.
- Find the plugin’s configuration file. Depending on the plugin and version, it may be called
config.ymlor something else. - Find the storage or database section. If the plugin provides a choice between MySQL and local storage, select or enable MySQL according to its documentation.
- Enter the database address, name, username, and password in the fields the plugin specifies. Include the port in the form the documentation requires; some plugins provide a separate port field, while others expect it as part of the address.
- Save the file, making sure the YAML structure and indentation remain valid.
Quote text values such as the username and password in YAML, especially the password. Special characters can be interpreted as YAML syntax if the value is left unquoted. Follow the plugin’s example for the exact structure rather than adding keys from another plugin’s configuration.

Worked example: LuckPerms
LuckPerms is a useful example because its official wiki documents a MySQL storage option. Its default storage is a file-based H2 database, so a normal single-server installation can use it without database configuration.
- Open the LuckPerms configuration file. The filename is
config.ymlorluckperms.conf, depending on the version. - In the “Storage Settings” section, set
storage-method: mysql. - Fill the
data:block with the address, database, username, and password values for your database, following the format documented for your LuckPerms version. - Save the configuration and restart the server.
A third-party reproduction of the layout shows address: localhost:3306 and a pool-settings block with maximum-pool-size: 10. Treat those as illustrative values, not authoritative defaults for your server or current LuckPerms version. In particular, use localhost only if the database is actually reachable at that address from the process running the server, and confirm the correct port and pool settings in the official documentation.

Restart and confirm the connection
After saving the configuration, restart the Minecraft server so the plugin can load the new storage settings. Watch the startup console for the plugin’s storage-provider message and any database connection errors. A successful start should show the MySQL storage provider loading without errors.
- If the plugin still reports local storage, check whether the setting was saved in the correct file and section, and whether the installed version uses the key you changed.
- If it reports a connection failure, compare the hostname, port, database name, username, and password with the values from the database panel. Check whether the database allows connections from the game server.
- If the configuration fails to parse, inspect YAML indentation and quote text values, particularly the password.
- If the plugin starts without a visible error but data does not appear shared, confirm that each server is configured to connect to the same intended database and that the relevant plugin supports the shared-storage behavior you expect.
Migration and data safety
Changing a plugin’s storage method is not necessarily the same as copying existing data into MySQL. The setting tells the plugin which storage to use; whether it migrates existing records automatically depends on the plugin and its version. Back up the current plugin data and database before attempting any migration, and use the plugin’s official migration instructions.

A LuckPerms migration command written as lp migrate mysql appears in a third-party excerpt, but it is not confirmed by the official documentation cited here. Do not treat it as a verified command. Check current LuckPerms documentation for the supported migration procedure before running any command that might alter or overwrite data.
Plugin-specific settings matter
There is no universal Minecraft plugin MySQL configuration file or set of keys. LuckPerms uses its own storage settings; another plugin may put database settings in a different section or use different field names. Configuration names can also change between versions, so the configuration shipped with your installed version and the plugin’s current documentation should take precedence over examples for another plugin.
