To stop advancement messages from appearing in Minecraft chat, use the Java Edition gamerule that matches your version: /gamerule announceAdvancements false before Java 1.21.11, or /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages false in Java 1.21.11 and newer. This suppresses the chat announcement only. The advancement toast that slides in at the top-right is a separate notification and can still appear.

Which command should you use?

The correct command depends on the edition and Java version of the world or server. Java gamerule names are case-sensitive, so enter the spelling exactly.

Edition and version Command What it disables
Java Edition before 1.21.11 /gamerule announceAdvancements false The advancement message sent to chat
Java Edition 1.21.11 or newer /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages false The advancement message sent to chat
Bedrock Edition Do not use either Java command Bedrock uses its own achievement system and gamerule list

Mojang’s Java 1.21.11 release notes record the rename from announceAdvancements to minecraft:show_advancement_messages as part of the move to namespaced, snake-case gamerule IDs. If a command that worked previously now produces an unknown-command error, checking this version change should be your first step.

What the gamerule actually controls

Earning an advancement normally produces two kinds of feedback in Java Edition. A sliding toast appears in the top-right corner, and a message is posted in chat when the announcement gamerule is enabled. The gamerule changes the second behavior: it prevents the chat line from being announced.

  • Disabled: the chat announcement accompanying an earned advancement is suppressed.
  • Unaffected: the advancement remains earned and available in the advancement interface.
  • Usually still visible: the separate top-right advancement toast.

This distinction explains why a world can look quiet in chat while still showing a popup. The command is not a way to revoke progress, delete advancement data, or disable the advancement system. It changes announcement visibility at the world or server level.

Before you enter the command

Confirm the edition

The commands in this guide are for Java Edition. Bedrock Edition has a different /gamerule reference and does not list either announceAdvancements or show_advancement_messages. If you are playing Bedrock, do not treat a Java command error as a typing mistake until you have confirmed the edition.

Confirm the Java version

Use the older rule name on Java releases before 1.21.11. Use the namespaced rule on 1.21.11 and later. The rename is the reason an older tutorial may stop working after an update.

Make sure commands are allowed

You need permission to run gamerules in the world or server. In a single-player world, that means commands must be available for the current session or world configuration. On a multiplayer server, an operator or another user with the required permission may need to run the command for you. A missing permission can look similar to a malformed command, so check access before changing the spelling.

Remember that this is not a client-only preference

A gamerule is stored with the world or applied by the server. Changing it affects the game environment rather than just hiding messages on one player’s client. On a shared server, coordinate with the operator before changing a setting that affects everyone in that world.

Java Edition before 1.21.11: disable chat announcements

  1. Open the chat interface in the Java Edition world or server.
  2. Enter /gamerule announceAdvancements false, preserving the capital A in Advancements.
  3. Submit the command. The Boolean value false turns off the announcement behavior.
  4. Earn an advancement, or have another player earn one, and watch the chat area. The accompanying advancement line should no longer be posted.

The rule name is case-sensitive in Java. Variations such as announceadvancements, misspellings, or an altered command structure can result in an unknown or incomplete command instead of changing the setting.

Java Edition 1.21.11 and newer: use the renamed rule

  1. Open chat in the Java Edition 1.21.11-or-newer world or server.
  2. Enter /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages false.
  3. Submit the command with the value set to false.
  4. Trigger an advancement or wait for another player to earn one, then check chat for the announcement.

The namespace minecraft:, the underscores, and the plural messages are all part of the renamed identifier. Omitting the namespace or reverting to the pre-1.21.11 name can produce an unknown-command error on current Java releases.

Mojang’s 1.21.11 notes describe the exact mapping as announceAdvancements -> minecraft:show_advancement_messages. That mapping is why a version-aware command is more reliable than copying a command from an older video or forum post.

How to check the current value

If you have permission to use commands, query the gamerule without supplying a new value. Use the identifier that belongs to your Java version:

  • On a pre-1.21.11 release, enter /gamerule announceAdvancements.
  • On Java 1.21.11 or later, enter /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages.

The command reports the current Boolean value. A value of false means the chat announcement is disabled; a value of true means the chat announcement is enabled. Querying first is useful on a server where you do not know whether another operator has already changed the rule.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+ | Video Game Themed Deck with Special Rule for Kids, Teens, Parties & Family Game Night, 2-10 Players (Amazon Exclusive)
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

If the query itself is rejected as unknown or incomplete, do not keep changing the Boolean value. Recheck the edition and version, then use the identifier associated with that release.

How to verify that it worked

Use an actual advancement event as the test rather than relying only on the command’s autocomplete or the absence of immediate feedback.

  1. Run the version-appropriate gamerule command.
  2. Trigger an advancement in the world, or ask another player to trigger one.
  3. Look at the chat area for the text announcement.
  4. Look separately at the top-right corner for the advancement toast.

The expected result is that the chat message is absent. A toast may still slide into view because it is a separate notification. Seeing that popup does not prove the gamerule failed.

Why the popup can remain visible

The advancement reference distinguishes the toast from the chat announcement. The toast is a sliding notification in the top-right corner. The gamerule governs the accompanying chat message when the rule is enabled; it does not state that the toast is removed when the rule is disabled.

Therefore, there are two different goals:

  • Stop chat spam: set the relevant gamerule to false.
  • Hide the top-right toast: this gamerule is not documented as the control for that notification, so disabling chat announcements alone will not necessarily achieve it.

If your complaint is specifically about the popup rather than the chat line, changing the announcement gamerule is the wrong fix. Keep the two symptoms separate when describing the problem to a server operator or looking for edition-specific settings.

Troubleshooting command errors

“Unknown or incomplete command”

Check the edition first. If the game is Bedrock, neither Java identifier is listed in the Bedrock gamerule reference. If the game is Java, check whether it is before or after 1.21.11. Older releases use announceAdvancements; 1.21.11 and newer use minecraft:show_advancement_messages.

The old command stopped working after an update

On Java 1.21.11 and later, replace /gamerule announceAdvancements false with /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages false. The behavior being controlled is the same; the gamerule ID changed.

The command is rejected even though the spelling is correct

Verify that you are allowed to use commands in the current world or server. A player without the necessary permission cannot change a world-level gamerule. Ask the server operator to run the appropriate command if you do not have access.

Chat is quiet but a popup still appears

This is the expected split between the two notification types. The command targets the chat announcement. The top-right advancement toast is separate and may remain visible.

The command appears to work, but another player still sees messages

Because the gamerule belongs to the world or server, a correctly applied change should be checked in that same environment. Confirm the value with the version-appropriate query, then test with a new advancement event. If the query and test disagree, involve the operator responsible for the server configuration rather than applying a client-side workaround.

Multiplayer and server administration

On a multiplayer Java server, the setting is administered at the world or server level. An operator can apply it with the same version-specific command used in single-player. Mojang publishes an official Java server jar, so the relevant task is changing the gamerule in the running world; it is not a setting tied to a particular hosting provider.

Before changing it on a shared server, tell players what will change: advancement progress remains intact, but the corresponding chat announcements will no longer be posted. This avoids confusion when someone earns an advancement and sees a toast without a chat line.

If the server is upgraded across the 1.21.11 boundary, recheck the gamerule using the new namespaced identifier. A migration that leaves an old command in an administration note or startup procedure can lead to an unknown-command error even though the desired behavior is still supported under the renamed rule.

Bedrock Edition: do not copy the Java rule

Bedrock Edition uses the achievement system rather than Java’s advancement system. Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamerule reference has its own syntax and Boolean-rule inventory, and it does not list announceAdvancements or show_advancement_messages.

As a result, the Java commands in this article are not a Bedrock solution. First identify whether the notification is an achievement message, a separate popup, or another interface element, then use guidance written for the Bedrock edition and its available settings. A Java command failing in Bedrock is expected behavior, not evidence that the command needs different capitalization.

Restore advancement chat announcements

To turn announcements back on, use the same version-specific gamerule and change the final value from false to true:

  • Java before 1.21.11: /gamerule announceAdvancements true
  • Java 1.21.11 and newer: /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages true

After restoring the value, test with a later advancement event. Changing the rule does not retroactively recreate messages for advancements earned while announcements were disabled.

Quick decision checklist

  • Are you playing Java Edition? If not, stop and use edition-specific Bedrock guidance.
  • Is the Java version before 1.21.11? Use announceAdvancements.
  • Is the Java version 1.21.11 or newer? Use minecraft:show_advancement_messages.
  • Are you trying to remove a chat line or a top-right toast? This gamerule controls the chat line.
  • Do you have permission to change gamerules? If not, ask the world owner or server operator.
  • Did you verify the result with a new advancement event? Test chat and the toast separately.

Bottom line

For Java Edition, disable advancement announcements with /gamerule announceAdvancements false on versions before 1.21.11, or /gamerule minecraft:show_advancement_messages false on Java 1.21.11 and later. The setting suppresses the chat announcement, not the advancement itself and not necessarily the top-right toast. Edition, version, exact capitalization, and command permission determine whether the change succeeds.
