On a Paper-based Minecraft server, disable the main watchdog by editing the server’s server.properties file and setting max-tick-time=-1. Stop the server cleanly first, save the file, and restart it. Paper documents 60000 milliseconds (60 seconds) as the default and states: “Setting this to -1 will disable watchdog entirely.”

Do this only after investigating why the server is stalling. The watchdog exists to terminate a process whose server thread has stopped making progress. Turning it off can leave a hung process running indefinitely and removes an automatic recovery action.

What the watchdog does
A Minecraft server advances the world in regular ticks. Paper’s documentation describes a normal target tick as about 0.05 seconds, or 20 ticks per second. The watchdog monitors how long one tick takes. In server.properties, max-tick-time is the maximum number of milliseconds a single tick may take before the watchdog stops the server.
The documented default is 60000, which means 60,000 milliseconds or 60 seconds. A tick that exceeds that limit is treated as a crash. The watchdog forcibly shuts down the Java process by calling System.exit(1). A message such as “The server has not responded for 10 seconds!” is therefore a serious stall warning, not an ordinary low-TPS notice.

Disabling the watchdog changes what happens after a stall; it does not make the stalled tick complete, repair a plugin, or make world generation safe. The server thread can remain blocked while the operating-system process continues to exist.
Before you disable it
Make a backup of server.properties and, if practical, the server’s current logs and crash reports. A clean shutdown matters because many server implementations rewrite configuration files during shutdown. Editing while the process is running can result in your change being overwritten.

- Record the watchdog message, the time of the stall, and the last actions players or administrators performed.
- Review crash reports and logs for a plugin, mod, world-generation operation, or chunk-loading task that was active when the stall occurred.
- Check whether the machine is under CPU, memory, or storage pressure.
- Decide whether you need a permanent disable, a temporary diagnostic change, or merely more time before shutdown.
There is no single root cause for every watchdog event. The watchdog reports that the server stopped responding; the surrounding logs and system conditions are what identify the cause.
Step-by-step: disable the main watchdog on Paper
- Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit the file while the server process is still writing configuration.
- Open the server root directory. This is the directory containing the server’s main configuration files and world folders.
- Open
server.propertiesin a plain-text editor. Avoid a word processor or an editor that adds rich-text formatting. - Find the
max-tick-timeentry. On a standard Paper configuration it appears as a key followed by an equals sign and a number. - Replace its value with
-1. The complete line must be exactlymax-tick-time=-1. Keep the key spelling and hyphens unchanged. - Add the key if it is missing. Add a new line containing
max-tick-time=-1; do not create a second entry with a different spelling. - Save the file without changing its extension. It must remain
server.properties, not a file such asserver.properties.txt. - Restart the server. The setting is read during startup, so a running process will not adopt the new value until it is restarted.
Paper’s documented wording is unambiguous: “Setting this to -1 will disable watchdog entirely.” The value is expressed in milliseconds for ordinary positive settings, but -1 is a special value meaning that the main watchdog shutdown threshold is disabled.
How to verify the change
After restarting, stop the server again before making another configuration edit and confirm that the saved line still reads max-tick-time=-1. Some hosting panels expose a file editor that can silently restore a template or write a second configuration file; make sure you edited the file used by the instance you actually launched.

Do not deliberately freeze a production server just to test the setting. A controlled test can consume resources, disconnect players, corrupt in-progress work, or leave the Java process unresponsive. Verification should normally consist of checking the file and confirming that the server starts normally.

Setting -1 removes the automatic shutdown threshold. A finite, larger value keeps the safety mechanism while allowing an unusually long operation to finish. Choose between them based on whether a long tick is expected and bounded or represents a failure that needs intervention.

Do not treat a larger timeout as a performance fix. It only changes how long the server waits before acting. If the same plugin or world task repeatedly blocks the server thread, the underlying problem remains.
Milliseconds in server.properties versus seconds in spigot.yml
Paper also documents a timeout in spigot.yml: settings.timeout-time. That setting is expressed in seconds and represents the time since the last server tick before the server is considered unresponsive and stopped or restarted. Paper’s documentation describes it as a vanilla-like equivalent of the server.properties watchdog setting, but with seconds instead of milliseconds.
These units are easy to confuse:

Do not copy a value from one file to the other without converting units and confirming which behavior you intend to change. Editing spigot.yml when you meant to disable the server.properties watchdog can leave the main shutdown behavior unchanged.

Why spigot.yml tile and entity limits are not a substitute
Paper’s reference includes spigot.yml options named max-tick-time.tile and max-tick-time.entity. Paper states that these options do not operate because they are disabled or non-functional. Changing them is therefore not a reliable way to prevent the main watchdog from stopping the server.
If your goal is to control the watchdog that terminates the process after a stalled tick, use the documented server.properties key. If your goal is to diagnose a tile-entity or entity workload, investigate the relevant plugin, mod, world, or chunk activity instead of relying on those non-functional entries.
Is disable.watchdog the same as disabling the watchdog?
No. Paper documents a separate Java system property named disable.watchdog. Its purpose is to disable the watchdog warning system. Paper also has a watchdog section in paper-global.yml for early-warning behavior.
Warning controls and shutdown controls are different:
max-tick-time=-1disables the main automatic shutdown threshold inserver.properties.disable.watchdogaffects watchdog warning output; it does not replace the shutdown-threshold setting when your objective is to stop automatic process termination.- The
watchdogsection inpaper-global.ymlcontrols Paper’s early-warning behavior and likewise does not, by itself, perform the same function asmax-tick-time=-1.
If you suppress warnings while leaving the shutdown threshold intact, the server can still be stopped after an overlong tick. If you set max-tick-time=-1 but leave warnings enabled, you may still receive diagnostic messages even though the main watchdog will not terminate the process for that condition.

Paper, Spigot, and other server implementations
The exact file depends on the server software you run. The procedure above follows Paper’s documented server.properties reference. Spigot-derived installations also commonly expose settings in spigot.yml, including the seconds-based settings.timeout-time described above.
Vanilla, Fabric-style, and Forge-style installations may use a different set of properties or a different watchdog implementation. Before editing, identify the jar and configuration files that the instance actually starts. Do not assume that a Paper-specific key, a Spigot-specific key, or a Java system property has the same effect in another implementation. Use that implementation’s own documentation for its shutdown and warning settings.

Troubleshooting a watchdog event before changing configuration
Inspect logs and crash reports
Start with the log lines immediately before the watchdog message and any generated crash report. Look for a repeating stack trace, a plugin task, a world-generation operation, or a chunk-loading action that occupies the server thread. Preserve the files before restarting if you need to compare multiple incidents.
Check plugins and mods
Temporarily remove, update, or isolate a suspected plugin or mod in a test copy of the server. A watchdog event can be caused by one component performing an unbounded operation on the main thread. Change one variable at a time so that a successful restart or disappearance of the stall is meaningful.

Review world generation and chunk loading
Large generation jobs, forced chunk loading, and operations that touch many entities or blocks can delay ticks. Note which coordinates, dimensions, commands, or player actions preceded the stall. If the event is tied to one area, keep players away from it while you investigate rather than repeatedly loading the same problematic chunks on the live server.

Check CPU, memory, and storage pressure
A machine can appear to have a server problem when the host is out of CPU time, swapping heavily, short on memory, or waiting on a saturated disk. Check host-level metrics around the timestamp of the event. Resource pressure does not prove a particular cause, but it can explain why otherwise ordinary work stopped making progress.
Separate a slow tick from a stopped process
A temporary long tick may eventually finish; a deadlock or infinite loop may not. Increasing a finite timeout can be a short-term diagnostic measure for the former, but disabling the watchdog for the latter removes the mechanism that would otherwise terminate the process. If the server remains unresponsive after the change, plan for manual termination and restore from a known-good configuration.
Recovery and rollback
- Stop the affected process using your normal administrative procedure. If it will not respond, use the host’s documented process-management method rather than repeatedly launching additional copies.
- Restore the backed-up configuration or change
max-tick-time=-1back to the prior finite value. - Keep the logs and crash report from the incident; deleting them removes useful evidence.
- Remove or update the component identified during diagnosis, or reproduce the issue in a test copy.
- Restart once, monitor the startup log, and confirm that only one intended server process is running.
If the file does not parse after editing, check for accidental quotation marks, rich-text characters, a misspelled key, or a second conflicting entry. Replacing the file with the clean backup is safer than guessing at multiple edits.
Operational decision checklist
- Need the documented full disable? Set
server.propertiestomax-tick-time=-1. - Need protection but more time? Use a finite millisecond value larger than the default and document why it is needed.
- Only trying to change messages? Review
disable.watchdogand Paper’spaper-global.ymlwatchdog settings; these are warning controls, not a replacement for the shutdown threshold. - Editing
spigot.yml? Remember thatsettings.timeout-timeuses seconds, whileserver.propertiesuses milliseconds. - Seeing tile/entity timeout keys? Paper documents those options as disabled or non-functional.
- Still investigating? Keep the watchdog enabled while you inspect logs, plugins or mods, world-generation and chunk-loading work, and host resources.
What to expect after disabling it
The server may remain online as a process while players experience stalled ticks, timeouts, or an unresponsive world. Automatic shutdown will no longer provide a clean boundary for recovery when one tick exceeds the normal threshold. You may need to detect the condition through external monitoring or administrator observation and stop the process manually.
