If an HTTPS WordPress page still shows a missing padlock or a browser warning, at least one resource is probably being requested with an http:// URL. Open the browser’s Developer Tools, identify the exact request in Console or Network, test that URL over HTTPS, and then correct the reference in WordPress, your theme, a plugin, or the external service. Do not start a bulk replacement until the certificate, HTTPS virtual host, and redirect are working and you have a database backup.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Mixed content is not fixed merely by installing an SSL/TLS certificate. Every resource that contributes to the page—scripts, stylesheets, fonts, images, frames, audio, and video—must be delivered through HTTPS or removed. Browsers may upgrade some media automatically, but HTTP-only resources will fail and active content such as JavaScript and CSS is commonly blocked.

What a mixed-content warning means
A page loaded over HTTPS establishes a protected connection, but it becomes “mixed” when that page asks for one or more resources over plain HTTP. The browser must then decide whether to upgrade the request, block it, or allow it with a warning. MDN describes the distinction and the security consequences in its mixed-content documentation.
Active mixed content is the most serious case. JavaScript, CSS, fonts, iframes, XMLHttpRequests, and other executable or page-shaping resources can change what the visitor sees or does. Browsers commonly block these requests, which can break menus, forms, payment widgets, game embeds, layouts, or analytics. Because an attacker on the network could alter an HTTP response before it reaches an HTTPS page, allowing active mixed content weakens the security boundary that HTTPS is meant to provide.

Some browsers classify images, audio, and video as upgradeable content and try to request the same host over HTTPS. That behavior is a compatibility aid, not a repair: the request still fails when the host does not offer HTTPS, and the original WordPress URL remains wrong. MDN’s guidance is unambiguous: “The best strategy to avoid issues with mixed content is to serve all the content as HTTPS.”
Check the HTTPS foundation before editing WordPress
URL changes in WordPress cannot compensate for an incorrectly configured server. Confirm these prerequisites first:
- The certificate covers the hostname visitors use, including the relevant subdomain.
- The HTTPS virtual host (or equivalent server configuration) serves the site and its assets.
- Opening the HTTPS URL directly works without a certificate error.
- HTTP requests redirect to the intended HTTPS canonical URL without a redirect loop.
- Your CDN, reverse proxy, and origin agree on whether the original request was HTTP or HTTPS.
WordPress recommends HTTPS to protect logins and visitors. Its current instructions are in the WordPress HTTPS documentation. If the certificate or virtual host is not ready, fix that at the host or server first. Only then change WordPress’s canonical URLs.
Find the exact request that causes the warning
A padlock icon does not identify the offending resource. Use the browser on the affected page so you can map the URL to the component that generated it.
- Open the page over its HTTPS address.
- Open Developer Tools (usually with
F12or the browser menu) and select Console. - Reload the page with the console open. Record every mixed-content message, including the full
http://URL and whether it is a script, stylesheet, font, image, frame, media file, or API request. - Select Network, reload again, and filter requests for
http://. The Initiator, document, or stack information can reveal the theme, plugin, inline style, or content block that inserted the URL. - Copy the hostname and path exactly. A URL in a CSS file or JavaScript bundle may not appear in the page source, and a URL generated by a plugin may not be visible in the editor.
- Try the same URL with
https://. If it loads successfully and presents a valid certificate, the reference can usually be changed. If it fails, treat the resource as HTTP-only and replace or remove it.
MDN’s mixed-content guidance recommends using the console to locate the request and testing the HTTPS equivalent. Do not assume that changing one visible image fixes the page; one blocked script or font can keep the warning alive.
Choose a remediation method deliberately
The safest method depends on how many references exist, where they are stored, and whether you can test a reversible copy first.

| Method | Best use | Strength | Risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual edit of one URL | A small number of posts, blocks, widget fields, or settings | Precise and easy to review | Easy to miss copies elsewhere |
| Controlled database search-and-replace | Many first-party URLs across content and metadata | Consistent site-wide correction | Requires a backup, staging test, and serialized-data awareness |
| Theme or plugin code change | Hard-coded URLs in templates, CSS, JavaScript, or plugin configuration | Fixes the source that regenerates the bad URL | Updates can overwrite edits; custom code needs version control |
| Replace or remove an external dependency | A third-party host has no usable HTTPS endpoint | Restores page reliability and security | May alter features, styling, tracking, or embeds |
Content-Security-Policy: upgrade-insecure-requests |
Temporary containment during a migration | Rewrites eligible HTTP URLs before the request | Cannot make an HTTP-only resource work and can conceal failures if not monitored |
Staging and backups make bulk changes substantially safer than editing production directly. First-party resources are usually easier to convert than third-party services, and a browser console checks one page while a crawler or continuous-integration check can cover many URLs.
Set WordPress’s canonical URLs to HTTPS
After the server is correctly serving HTTPS, go to Settings > General in the WordPress administration area. Change both fields below to the same HTTPS canonical address:
- WordPress Address (URL) — where the core files are installed.
- Site Address (URL) — the public address visitors use.
Save the change, sign in again if WordPress redirects you, and confirm that the front page and administration area use HTTPS. Do not make this change while HTTPS is broken; you can lock yourself out or create a redirect loop. If a host, reverse proxy, or deployment process defines these values outside the dashboard, update that configuration using the same canonical URL instead of creating conflicting settings.
Replace hard-coded HTTP references
Changing the two General settings does not rewrite old links already stored in the site. Work through each location that can emit a URL:

Posts, pages, and reusable content
Edit image URLs, download links, embeds, custom HTML blocks, reusable blocks, menus, and widgets that contain the old scheme. A protocol-relative URL such as //example.com/file.js follows the page’s scheme, but replacing it with an explicit HTTPS URL is clearer and avoids ambiguity.
Media metadata and generated markup
Check attachment captions, image metadata, galleries, and fields added by page builders or custom post types. Regenerated thumbnails or responsive-image markup can retain an old base URL even after the original image is edited.

Theme files and child-theme assets
Search template PHP, CSS, JavaScript, inline styles, and enqueue functions for http://. Correct the source file rather than repeatedly editing generated HTML. A child theme or maintained custom plugin is safer than modifying a parent theme that will be updated.
Plugin settings and widgets
Review settings pages for sliders, forms, analytics, advertising, maps, video players, fonts, and custom scripts. A plugin may store a URL in options or output it dynamically, so the browser’s Initiator information is useful when the page editor contains no obvious reference.

For a large site, take a complete database backup and test on staging before running a controlled search-and-replace from the old site URL to the HTTPS URL. WordPress data can contain serialized PHP fields; use a tool that understands serialized data rather than a raw text replacement that can corrupt string lengths. Limit the replacement to the intended first-party hostname and scheme. Do not blindly convert every external http:// string, because some services use a different hostname, path, or protocol requirement.
Handle third-party resources that do not support HTTPS
When the offending hostname belongs to another provider, changing your own site URL cannot create a certificate for it. Test the provider’s HTTPS endpoint and confirm that the complete path, redirects, and required query parameters work.
- If the HTTPS version works, update the plugin, theme, block, or content field to that exact URL.
- If the provider documents a new HTTPS hostname or embed code, use the current version rather than editing only the scheme.
- If the resource is HTTP-only, replace it with an HTTPS-capable service or remove the dependency. Do not keep HTTP scripts, stylesheets, fonts, or frames on an HTTPS page.
- For a media file that browsers auto-upgrade, still correct the stored URL so visitors on stricter browsers and future deployments do not depend on upgrade behavior.
Be especially cautious with third-party JavaScript and iframes. A blocked script can stop later scripts from running, while an iframe may display a blank frame or a browser warning. Removing an unused tracking snippet or obsolete embed is often safer than trying to proxy it through your server.
Use CSP upgrading only as a migration control
During a migration, a server can send the header Content-Security-Policy: upgrade-insecure-requests. The browser then rewrites eligible HTTP URLs to HTTPS before making the request. MDN documents the directive at Content-Security-Policy: upgrade-insecure-requests.

This header does not provide HTTPS to an HTTP-only host. If the upgraded URL has no working HTTPS endpoint, the request fails. It also does not repair the URL stored in WordPress, theme files, or a plugin. Use it to reduce exposure while permanent references are being corrected, monitor the resulting failures, and remove the dependency or fix its source. Do not treat a quiet console after CSP rewriting as proof that every original URL is correct.
Purge caches and account for proxy layers
After changing URLs, purge every layer that may still serve old HTML, CSS, or JavaScript:
- WordPress page and object caches.
- Plugin-generated CSS and JavaScript bundles.
- CDN and reverse-proxy caches.
- Server-side full-page caches.
- Browser cache during testing.
If a proxy terminates TLS before the origin, verify that it forwards the original protocol correctly and that WordPress does not generate HTTP URLs because it believes the request is insecure. A cache purge without fixing the origin merely makes the bad URL reappear after the next cache fill.
Verify the repair on real user journeys
Use a clean browser session or an incognito window after purging caches. Test more than the home page:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open representative posts, pages, archives, search results, and media-heavy templates.
- Keep Developer Tools open and confirm that Console contains no mixed-content errors or blocked-resource messages.
- Use Network to check that scripts, stylesheets, fonts, images, frames, audio, and video complete over HTTPS.
- Exercise JavaScript interactions such as navigation menus, login, comments, contact forms, game embeds, filters, and lazy-loaded media.
- Submit forms and test checkout or account flows if the site has them. Confirm that redirects remain HTTPS and that cookies are not being set unexpectedly over HTTP.
- Run a crawler across the site and inspect its list of insecure URLs. A crawler finds templates and archives that a single-page console check cannot cover.
- Repeat the check after cache regeneration and, where possible, in a second browser engine.
WordPress Site Health provides additional diagnostics in Tools > Site Health. Its documentation is available at WordPress Site Health. Site Health does not replace browser and crawler checks, but it can expose related configuration problems that affect the HTTPS migration.

The page redirects repeatedly or the dashboard is inaccessible
The HTTPS virtual host, proxy protocol detection, and WordPress URL settings disagree. Restore access using the host’s documented URL configuration or a safe staging/backup procedure, then make the server and both WordPress address fields use one canonical HTTPS URL. Do not add more redirects until the existing chain is understood.

An image works in one browser but still triggers warnings
The browser may be auto-upgrading an upgradeable image. Check the actual Network request and correct the stored URL anyway. Another image variant, thumbnail, CSS background, or lazy-load data attribute may still contain HTTP.
A stylesheet, font, or script is blocked
These are active or blockable resources. Test the exact hostname over HTTPS, then update the enqueue code, CSS, plugin setting, or external provider. If no HTTPS endpoint exists, replace or remove the resource; CSP upgrading cannot solve an HTTP-only host.

The editor shows no HTTP URL, but the console does
Use Network’s Initiator information to identify the generating file or plugin. Search theme and child-theme code, generated bundles, widget settings, and database options. Purge caches after correcting the source so an old bundle is not mistaken for a failed fix.
The warning returns after an update
An update may have restored a hard-coded URL or regenerated an asset from an old setting. Fix the maintained configuration or report the issue to the plugin or theme author, keep custom changes in a child theme or custom extension, and include the exact request and initiating component in your report.
Only a third-party frame fails
Check whether the provider changed its embed URL or requires a new HTTPS hostname. If it remains HTTP-only, remove it or choose an HTTPS-capable replacement. Framing an HTTP page inside an HTTPS page cannot be made secure by changing your WordPress domain.
Prevent mixed content from returning
- Use HTTPS URLs in new content, theme code, plugin settings, documentation examples, and deployment configuration.
- Keep a staging copy and a current backup before migrations or database replacements.
- Include a crawler or automated URL check in releases so templates and generated assets are tested, not just the home page.
- Review CDN and reverse-proxy protocol settings whenever infrastructure changes.
- Remove obsolete embeds and scripts instead of carrying them indefinitely under a temporary CSP policy.
- After major plugin, theme, or hosting changes, reload representative pages with the console open and test forms and interactive features.
Mixed-content warnings are symptoms of inconsistent resource URLs, not a separate SSL product problem. Once the server serves HTTPS correctly, the durable fix is to identify every HTTP request, convert it to a working HTTPS resource, or remove it, then verify the result across the site.
