The exact setting to use
Arma Reforger controls camera permissions at the server level. The official server reference documents disableThirdPerson inside game.gameProperties; its documented default is false. Changing it to true prevents clients from switching to third person.

}Use the JSON Boolean true, without quotation marks. "true" is a text string and is not the same value. JSON property names are case-sensitive, so keep the spelling and capitalization exactly as shown. Add the property to the existing gameProperties object rather than replacing the rest of your server configuration.
The configuration reference describes the effect as: “Force clients to use the first-person view.” You can check the complete schema in Bohemia Interactive’s official Arma Reforger server configuration reference.

Route 1: turn it off in the in-game hosting interface
This is the simplest method when you host from Arma Reforger’s own server setup screen and do not maintain a separate JSON file.
- Open the host-your-own-game or server setup screen.
- Open the server settings before launching the session.
- Find the Third-person camera control.
- Disable that control.
- Apply the settings, then launch the session. If the session is already running, use the available restart or apply/reload control.
- Join the server with a test player and check that the camera cannot be switched to third person.
Bohemia Interactive documents this control in its host-your-own-game guide. Label placement can vary with the current interface, but the relevant option is named Third-person camera. You need to change it as the host or an administrator; an ordinary player cannot override a server camera rule.

Use this route for a dedicated server, a rented game-server panel that exposes configuration files, or a self-hosted installation where you manage the files directly. The exact filename and directory depend on how the server was installed, so follow the path supplied by your hosting provider or installation documentation rather than assuming a universal location.
Before editing
- Obtain owner or administrator access to the server files or management panel.
- Stop the server if the host requires the process to be offline while configuration is edited.
- Make a backup copy of the current configuration. This lets you restore unrelated settings if a syntax error prevents startup.
- Use a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting or smart quotation marks.
Safe editing procedure
- Stop the server using the provider’s stop button or your normal service-management procedure.
- Open the server configuration file identified by your host.
- Locate the top-level
gameobject and its nestedgamePropertiesobject. IfdisableThirdPersonalready exists, change only its value totrue. - If the property is absent, add
"disableThirdPerson": trueinsidegameProperties, placing a comma after the preceding property when JSON syntax requires one. - Preserve all existing fields, quotation marks, braces, and commas. Do not paste the small example over a complete production configuration unless it already contains nothing else you need.
- Save the file as plain JSON.
- Start the server again, or use the host’s documented reload/apply action if it supports live configuration reloads.
- Connect with a player account and test the camera restriction.
A minimal file can look like the example above, but a real server commonly has additional gameplay, scenario, networking, and administration fields. The camera property can coexist with those fields; it does not require a mod, a client-side file edit, or a special controller or other physical accessory.

Which implementation route should you choose?

If a managed panel offers both a form field and a raw configuration editor, prefer the provider’s documented method. Some panels rebuild JSON when you save general settings, so a hand-edited value can disappear unless it is also represented by the panel’s own option.

This is a server-side rule. Every joining client receives the restriction from the server, so players do not need to install a mod or alter their local files. It also means changing a player’s key bindings, camera preference, or hardware cannot bypass the rule.

Bohemia Interactive’s hosting guidance identifies public port 2001 as the default for making a self-hosted server reachable, but port forwarding does not enable or disable third-person view. Configure forwarding only when you need outside players to connect; it has no role in camera enforcement.
Apply the change and verify it
Saving a file while the server process is running does not guarantee that the running process has read the new value. Treat applying the configuration as a separate step.

- Confirm the value is a Boolean:
true, not"true". - Confirm the property is nested under
game→gameProperties, not in an unrelated section. - Save the file or apply the interface setting.
- Restart the server, or perform the provider’s supported reload operation.
- Join after the restart. Test from a normal player account, not only from the administrative setup screen.
- Attempt the usual third-person camera switch. A correctly applied rule should keep the player in first person.
For a controlled test, have one player join after the restart and try the camera switch while another administrator observes the same session. This distinguishes a server rule that is active from a setting that was changed only in an unpublished setup draft.
Troubleshooting when third person is still available
The server was not restarted or reloaded
Stop and start the service using the host’s normal controls, then reconnect. A player who was already connected before the configuration was applied may remain in a session created with the previous rules until the server is restarted or the host explicitly reloads settings.
The key or nesting is wrong
Check every character in game.gameProperties.disableThirdPerson. Common errors include disableThirdperson, disableThirdPersonView, placing the property directly under game, or creating a second gameProperties object. Remove duplicates and keep one correctly nested property.
The value is a string
JSON distinguishes Boolean values from strings. The accepted form is:

A provider rewrote the file
Some managed hosts generate the server file when you save a panel form, deploy an update, or restart the service. Compare the file after restarting. If your change vanished, set the provider’s own third-person option, use its supported custom-configuration field, or follow its instructions for persistent overrides. Do not repeatedly edit a generated file without checking which source the panel treats as authoritative.
You edited the wrong installation
Multiple local instances, staging servers, or old backups can have similarly named configuration files. Confirm the path shown by the launch command or host panel, then change the file belonging to the server your players actually join. Check the server identity and scenario after restarting so you are testing the intended instance.
The interface and file disagree
When a host provides both a graphical setting and a raw JSON editor, one may overwrite the other during deployment. Set the option in the documented control, save it, restart, and inspect the resulting configuration if the panel permits that. Avoid changing both routes repeatedly before establishing which one persists.

The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup, then reapply only the camera property. Inspect the line immediately before the new property for a missing comma and check that every opening brace has a matching closing brace. If the host provides a JSON validation message or startup log, use that message to locate syntax errors. A camera setting cannot take effect until the server accepts the complete configuration.

Persistence on common hosting arrangements
Built-in or local hosting
Use the Third-person camera control in the setup screen each time you create or modify the session. Apply it before launch and verify the restriction with a joining player.
Self-hosted dedicated server
Keep the edited configuration in the directory used by the service’s launch procedure. If you update or reinstall the server, check that the configuration was retained and re-test the camera rule afterward.
Managed game-server panel
Look for a gameplay or server-rules field corresponding to third-person camera before editing raw files. If no field exists, use the panel’s documented custom JSON mechanism and confirm that generated files retain the property after a restart. Provider-specific file locations, restart buttons, and reload support are not standardized.
