Use mob_griefing to stop creepers from damaging blocks, and tnt_explodes to prevent TNT from exploding. The exact gamerule names depend on your edition and version: Java changed to snake_case in 1.21.11, while Bedrock uses lowercase names without underscores. Choose the names for your server before entering either command; a mismatch is a common reason a command fails.

Choose the right gamerule names for your edition and version
Creeper block damage and TNT explosions are controlled by separate gamerules. To stop both, you need to change both rules. The names are not identical across Java and Bedrock, and Java’s names changed in version 1.21.11.

The TNT gamerule was added in Java 1.21.5. In Java 1.21.11, gamerules moved into a registry and the names in the table changed to snake_case. Bedrock uses its own spellings; do not copy the Java names into a Bedrock server command. If you are unsure of the exact server version, check the version shown by the server startup output or your server panel before selecting a row.
Disable both on Java 1.21.11 or later

You can use mobGriefing to prevent creepers from damaging blocks. The supplied version information establishes that tntExplodes was added in Java 1.21.5, so do not expect that gamerule to work on earlier versions. If you need TNT controlled on an older server, the evidence here does not establish a built-in gamerule or a reliable alternative; do not treat a rejected command as proof that the rule is merely misspelled.

Run the commands with sufficient permissions
You need permission to use commands in the world. On a server, this generally means commands are enabled and your player account has operator-level access. A hosting guide reports that if cheats are off, even operators cannot run slash commands. If the command is rejected for permission reasons, check the server’s command or cheats setting and your operator status rather than repeatedly changing the gamerule spelling.
- Confirm the edition and version. Determine whether the server is Java or Bedrock, then match its version to the table. The Java names differ across the 1.21.11 boundary.
- Choose the command interface. Use in-game chat if you have permission in the world, or use the server console. Include the leading slash in chat; omit it in the console.
- Set the specific rule or rules. Enter the mob-griefing rule for creeper block damage, the TNT rule for TNT explosions, or both if you want both effects disabled.
- Read the command response. A successful gamerule command should be accepted by the server. If it reports an unknown rule or invalid argument, recheck the edition, version and exact spelling rather than substituting names from another row.
- Check the effect in the same world. Test only the behavior you changed: mob block damage for the first rule, TNT detonation for the second. Do not assume that changing one rule changes the other.
Know what each setting changes
mob_griefing and creeper block damage
The mob-griefing rule is broader than creeper explosions. Setting it to false prevents mobs from damaging or changing blocks, but it also affects other mob behavior, including endermen and villagers, and whether mobs pick up items. Consider those effects before turning it off in a world where those interactions are part of play.

This rule does not make players immune to creepers. It stops the block damage caused by mobs; it does not stop mobs from damaging players. A creeper can therefore remain dangerous even when its explosion no longer breaks blocks.

tnt_explodes and TNT
The TNT rule is separate from mob griefing. Turning off TNT explosions does not require disabling mob griefing, and disabling mob griefing does not by itself turn off TNT explosions. On versions with the rule, set tnt_explodes to false on current Java or tntexplodes to false on Bedrock. Older Java versions without the rule cannot use this method to control TNT.
Understand the scope before changing a rule
These gamerules apply globally to the world, not to a single base, claim or selected area. If you change mob_griefing or its edition-specific equivalent, the effect is not limited to creepers or to the place where you entered the command. The same global scope applies to the TNT rule.
That makes gamerules suitable when you want a world-wide policy, such as preventing block damage across a survival server. They are not a per-region protection setting. The available evidence does not verify a region-plugin command for selectively controlling creeper or TNT explosions, so do not rely on unconfirmed flag syntax for that purpose.

- Changes affect more than the base: Gamerules are world-wide. The mob-griefing setting also influences other mobs, so it cannot be used as a creeper-only or area-only switch.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using
mobGriefingortntExplodeson Java 1.21.11 or later instead of the newer snake_case spelling. - Using Java gamerule spellings on Bedrock, or Bedrock spellings on Java.
- Changing only one rule while expecting both types of explosion behavior to change.
- Assuming
mob_griefing falseprevents creepers from hurting players. - Expecting gamerules to apply only to one region or one protected build.
- Trying to use the Java TNT gamerule on a version earlier than 1.21.5.
