Use the dedicated Medieval MC [FABRIC] MMC2 v31 Server Pack for Minecraft 1.20.1, not the client download. What you are actually installing
Medieval MC [FABRIC] MMC2 is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 from LunaPixelStudios. It is distributed through Modrinth and CurseForge. A multiplayer server needs the pack’s server distribution, because a normal client archive can contain graphics, interface, and other client-only mods that do not belong on a dedicated server.

CurseForge’s listing identifies Medieval MC [FABRIC] 1.20.1 v31 as the latest release in a search result dated November 21, 2025, and lists a separate MMC2 v31 Server Pack. Older files, including v30 and v7, remain available. Select the server pack whose version exactly matches the clients you intend to connect; do not simply download the newest file shown on the site if your players are using another MMC2 release.

Choose between self-hosting and one-click hosting
There are two valid ways to run MMC2. Self-hosting gives you control over files and configuration but requires you to install and maintain the loader, Java, backups, and network access. One-click hosting handles the installation workflow in a provider panel.

CreeperHost, BisectHosting, and Mado Hosting list one-click installation for this pack. Mado Hosting specifically states that its installer configures the Fabric loader and Minecraft 1.20.1 automatically. Confirm the selected MMC2 release in the host panel; an automatic installer does not remove the need to match client and server versions.
Self-host setup: step by step
1. Select the matching server archive
- Open the MMC2 files on CurseForge or Modrinth.
- Choose the release your group will use, such as v31, and select the item explicitly labeled Server Pack.
- Do not use the client pack as a substitute. If a file page displays several versions, check the version number in the filename and page heading before downloading.
- Extract the archive into a new, dedicated server directory. Avoid putting unrelated Minecraft worlds or another modpack in the same directory.
Keep the original archive until the server starts successfully. It is useful for comparing files after an accidental edit or failed update.
2. Read the release instructions before installing Java or launching
Open the server pack’s README and any supplied start script. Check the required Java major version, memory variables, working directory, and any first-run instructions. The available MMC2 listings do not verify a Java version for v31, so do not treat the commonly used Java version for other 1.20.1 installations as a confirmed MMC2 requirement.
If the archive includes a launch script, use it as the primary startup method. It may set JVM flags or point to a generated Fabric launcher file that differs from another release. If no script is included, follow the Fabric server installation instructions for Minecraft 1.20.1 and use the launcher filename created by that installation; do not rename files casually, because the script and launcher must agree.

3. Install Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1
- Run the Fabric server installer and choose Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Select the server installation option and point it at the empty server directory you created for MMC2.
- Allow the installer to create the Fabric launcher and supporting files.
- Compare the generated directory with the pack README. If the pack supplies a complete Fabric server layout or a start script, retain the pack’s expected filenames and paths.
Do not install a newer Minecraft version because it appears in a general Fabric installer list. MMC2’s verified mapping is specifically Fabric on 1.20.1.

Copy the server pack’s supplied folders and files into the Fabric server directory, merging folders when prompted. The important content normally includes the pack’s mods and config directories, but use the archive’s own layout rather than guessing which folders to copy. A server pack may also contain scripts, libraries, default settings, or datapacks that are required by that release.
If you downloaded a client archive by mistake, stop and obtain the server archive. Removing a few obvious client files from a client pack is not a reliable replacement for the dedicated server pack, because dependencies and configuration can differ.
5. Set memory and accept the EULA
Set the Java heap to at least 5,000 MB. That minimum comes from CreeperHost’s MMC2 listing. Use the memory field in your host panel or the variables in the supplied start script; do not create a second conflicting script with different values. Ensure the machine itself has additional memory for the operating system and background services, since assigning every available megabyte to Java can cause system-level swapping or termination.
Start the server once. It should create an EULA file and stop. Open that file, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance setting to true only if you agree to its terms. Start the server again using the pack’s supplied script or the command documented by its README.

6. Watch the first complete startup
Keep the console visible until the server reports that it has finished loading and is ready for connections. The first run can take longer while Fabric and the mods create configuration files. Do not interrupt it merely because the console pauses during world generation; investigate only after a clear error or process exit.
After a successful boot, stop the server cleanly from the console before changing settings. Make a copy of the newly created world and configuration directories before inviting players, giving you a rollback point if a mod change damages the save.
7. Connect a test client
Install the same MMC2 release on each client. GDLauncher offers a one-click installation of the CurseForge pack for the client side. Whichever launcher you use, the client must run Minecraft 1.20.1 with Fabric and the same pack version as the server. A client on v30 should not be used to test a v31 server, even if both are labeled MMC2.
Connect first from the host machine or local network when possible. If that succeeds but remote players cannot connect, the problem is likely address, port forwarding, firewall, or provider networking rather than the modpack files.

Local and remote addresses
Players on the same home network normally use the server computer’s local address. Players outside that network need the public address and a forwarded server port, unless a hosting provider exposes the port for you. Exact router labels vary, so record the port shown in the server configuration and forward that port to the machine running Java. Check the operating system firewall as well.

Never publish administrative credentials or grant operator access merely to solve a connection problem. Test with a normal player account, then add permissions deliberately.
Backups and updates
- Stop the server before copying a world backup; copying files while chunks are being written can produce an unusable save.
- Keep dated backups outside the live server directory.
- When updating MMC2, stop the server, back up the world and configuration, install the new server pack in a separate directory, and migrate only settings you understand.
- Never overwrite a working installation with an older pack version without restoring compatible configuration and world backups.
- Require every player to update to the same pack release before troubleshooting connection errors.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server exits immediately
Open logs/latest.log and read the first meaningful error, not just the final shutdown line. A Java-version error means the installed runtime does not satisfy the pack’s requirement; check the README or start script for the expected version. A missing launcher or file-not-found error usually means Fabric was installed in a different directory than the pack files or the supplied script is being run from the wrong working directory.
Out-of-memory errors or repeated stalls
Increase the heap above the 5,000 MB minimum only when the host machine has spare memory, and remove competing processes. Out-of-memory messages in latest.log indicate that the current allocation is insufficient for the workload or that a mod is consuming memory unexpectedly. Increasing Java memory cannot fix a disk-full condition or a mismatched mod that crashes during initialization.
Mixin, ClassNotFoundException, or “mod requires” errors
These messages commonly point to a loader, Minecraft, or pack-version mismatch. Confirm all three of these values:
- Minecraft is exactly 1.20.1.
- The server is running Fabric rather than another mod loader.
- The server’s
mods,config, and supporting files came from the same MMC2 server-pack release.
Do not download a random replacement jar from another version page. Re-extract the correct server pack into a clean directory and compare the result with the archive README.

Clients are rejected during login
A rejection can result from a client using the wrong MMC2 version, a different Fabric loader build, or a missing required mod. Have the player reinstall the exact pack release rather than manually adding individual jars. If every client fails after a server update, restore the last known-good server backup and verify the selected release number.

The server starts but remote players cannot reach it
Test locally first. If local access works, check the address players are using, the forwarded port, the host firewall, and whether your internet provider places the connection behind carrier-grade NAT. On a managed host, use the address and port shown in its panel instead of a home-router address.
Using a one-click host instead
- Create an instance and choose Medieval MC [FABRIC] MMC2 from the provider’s modpack installer.
- Select the exact release, with v31 as the currently listed release only if that is the version your clients will install.
- Verify that the panel identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Fabric before starting.
- Check the assigned memory against the 5,000 MB minimum listed by CreeperHost. If the host offers less, choose a larger plan or another provider.
- Start once, accept the EULA through the panel if prompted, and inspect the console for a completed startup.
- Use the provider’s backup and file tools before changing configs or adding extra mods.

Their prices, player limits, storage allocations, and CPU policies are not established here, so compare those terms directly in the provider panel before paying. A one-click installer reduces setup work; it does not guarantee that every optional mod, custom configuration, or later pack update will be supported automatically.
Pre-launch checklist
- Every player and the server use the same MMC2 release number.
- The downloaded file is labeled Server Pack, not only Client Pack.
- Minecraft is 1.20.1 and the loader is Fabric.
- The Java version comes from the selected pack’s README or start script.
- At least 5,000 MB is allocated to the server, with additional memory left for the operating system.
- The EULA is accepted after the first launch.
- The console reaches a ready state without unresolved errors.
- A fresh world backup exists before players begin building.
- Local and remote connection tests have been completed where applicable.
Bottom line
The reliable route is version matching: download the MMC2 server pack for the release you selected, install Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1, follow that archive’s Java and launch instructions, allocate at least 5,000 MB of RAM, and validate the first boot through latest.log. If you do not want to manage those files yourself, a one-click installer from a listed host is the simpler alternative, provided it installs the same pack release and meets the memory requirement.
