To disable Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) on a standalone Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, add -insecure to the server process’s launch switches and restart the server. If you start the server through a Steam dedicated-server interface, clear the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) checkbox instead. Both settings put the server in insecure mode, so it no longer provides VAC protection and should be restricted to trusted players, private testing, or development.

What disabling VAC changes
VAC is a server-security state, not a normal in-game setting. The server advertises itself as secure or insecure when its process starts. For a standalone CS2 dedicated server, -insecure tells the process not to run as a VAC-secure server. You cannot apply it with a chat command, console command, or a setting typed after the map has loaded; it belongs in the command that launches the server.

Steamworks defines its secure-server flag as the indication that a server wants VAC protection. Removing that secure operation changes the server’s security state. Valve distinguishes insecure servers from VAC-secure servers, and a player can join an insecure server only when the game and server browser offer that type of connection. A client that is itself in an insecure state also cannot meet the expectations of a VAC-secure server.
Disabling VAC does not create a second anti-cheat system, make plugins safe, or preserve the protections of a secure server. It removes the VAC-secure status for that server instance. Treat the change as a deliberate test or development setting rather than an optimization for an ordinary public server.

Choose the startup method you actually use
The correct place for the setting depends on how your CS2 server is started. The table shows the equivalent choices without assuming a particular operating system, host, container, or service manager.

There is no single universal CS2 command line. The executable path, existing arguments, map, ports, account-token handling, and service syntax vary by host. The documented part of the change is the -insecure switch itself.

Use this method when you can see or edit the command that starts the dedicated-server executable.
- Stop the running server cleanly. Do not edit a launch command while an older process is still running and assume the running process has changed. Stop the process using the normal control offered by your host or service manager.
- Locate the real launch command. Look in the script, shortcut, service definition, container entrypoint, or hosting panel that starts CS2. Preserve the arguments already required by your deployment.
- Add the switch as a separate argument. Put
-insecurealongside the executable’s other launch switches, not inside a map name, quoted value, or server configuration file. - Save the changed command and start the server again. The setting takes effect when the new server process is created. A map change or a simple gameplay restart is not the same as restarting the executable.
- Confirm that the process you started is the process players are reaching. On hosts with multiple instances, verify the instance, address, and ports before testing. A correctly edited command has no effect if a different service or old process is still serving connections.
An illustrative command shape is:
/path/to/cs2 -dedicated -insecure +map de_dust2This is a shape, not a universal recipe. Keep the switches and values your host requires, adapt the executable path, and do not infer that the example supplies your ports, account token, map rotation, or service syntax. The material that establishes the VAC change establishes -insecure; it does not establish one command line that works for every deployment.

Disable VAC in a Steam dedicated-server interface
Some Steam dedicated-server interfaces expose the same choice as a checkbox instead of a typed switch. In that interface:
- Open the configuration page for the CS2 dedicated server you intend to launch.
- Find Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat).
- Clear the checkbox. Steam describes the checked state as “VAC enabled on the server” and the unchecked state as “VAC disabled on the server.”
- Apply or save the configuration, then stop and start the server so the new launch configuration is used.
- Test the newly started instance rather than relying on a previously open server browser entry.
If the interface shows the box checked again after a restart, the setting may be controlled by a saved profile, a host panel, or a service template. Change the authoritative configuration that performs the launch; repeatedly clearing a temporary screen will not alter an external service definition.

Valve’s Source Multiplayer Networking documentation specifically says that loading plugins for Counter-Strike 2 requires -insecure, because plugin loading disables VAC. That makes insecure mode relevant to plugin development, controlled experiments, and local test servers.
The requirement should not be expanded into a rule that every custom file needs the switch. The documented relationship is between plugin loading and insecure operation. If you are only changing maps, configuration values, or other server content, determine whether the particular tool or modification has its own requirements. Regardless of the file type, once the server runs with -insecure, it is not a VAC-secure server.

Plan plugin work as a separate environment from an ordinary public server. Keep a known-good secure launch configuration so you can return to it after testing, and avoid allowing untrusted users into an instance where experimental code is running.
Can a private or LAN server use insecure mode?
Yes. The launch switch is still the mechanism for a standalone server, whether the server is reachable only on a local network or is exposed more broadly. A private or LAN setting limits who can reach the server; it does not restore VAC protection.
Use access controls appropriate to your environment while VAC is off:
- Bind or firewall the server so only the intended network can reach it.
- Use any password, allowlist, or platform access control already supported by your deployment.
- Tell every participant that the server is insecure before they connect.
- Do not reuse an insecure test instance as a public match server.
- Stop the instance or remove the switch when the experiment is finished.
These are exposure-reduction measures, not substitutes for VAC. They reduce the number of people who can connect while the server lacks anti-cheat enforcement.

Verify that the server really is insecure
Verification matters because a launch panel, wrapper script, or automatic restart may silently start a different command than the one you edited. Use several checks that fit your hosting arrangement:

- Check the effective launch configuration. Confirm that the command or argument list used for the current process contains
-insecure, or that the Steam interface’s Secure checkbox is still cleared. - Confirm a full process restart occurred. A configuration saved on disk is not proof that the already-running process adopted it.
- Check the server listing or connection behavior. An insecure instance should be treated as a different security class from a VAC-secure server. If your browser or administration tools expose a secure/insecure indicator, use it as an additional check.
- Check the correct instance. Match the address, port, map, and server identity you expect. A test client can otherwise connect to another CS2 process on the same machine or host.
- Run the plugin or development test only after those checks. If a plugin still refuses to load, troubleshoot its own installation and compatibility separately from VAC configuration.
No single universal log line or port value is established for every CS2 deployment, so do not treat an example from another host as a required verification string.

Valve states that players can use insecure servers when a game offers them, while VAC-secure servers remain a separate class. A player who expects ordinary secure-server eligibility should therefore not assume that an insecure server provides the same connection conditions.
CS2’s Trusted Mode documentation gives a client-side example of the same boundary: unsigned DLL injection can cause the game to launch in insecure mode, which prohibits playing on VAC-secure servers. That is a client state, not a way to disable VAC on a dedicated server, but it illustrates why secure and insecure operation should not be mixed in your expectations.

Explain the distinction to testers before they join. An insecure server can be useful for a controlled task, yet it is the wrong choice when your objective is a normal VAC-secure match.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The checkbox is cleared, but the server still appears secure
- Stop and start the server process; saving a UI value alone may not restart it.
- Check whether a host panel, service file, or startup script overwrites the interface setting.
- Confirm that the server browser entry points to the instance you changed, especially if several instances share a machine.
The command contains -insecure, but a plugin still will not load
- Confirm that
-insecureis an argument to the CS2 executable, not text inside a configuration variable. - Verify that the edited script is the one actually invoked by the service, shortcut, container, or panel.
- Check the plugin’s own installation, version, permissions, and compatibility requirements. The switch addresses the VAC requirement documented for CS2 plugin loading; it does not repair an unrelated plugin error.
Players cannot join after the change
- Check that the server has completed startup and is listening on the same address and ports as before.
- Make sure clients are attempting to join the insecure instance and understand that secure-server expectations do not apply.
- Review firewall, password, allowlist, and network restrictions introduced by your private test setup.
The server becomes secure again after an automatic restart
- Find the process supervisor’s authoritative command. Automatic restarts commonly use a service definition or container configuration rather than the command you ran manually.
- Put
-insecurein that persistent argument list, then restart through the supervisor. - After maintenance or an update, repeat the effective-command check before allowing plugin tests or players to connect.
How to turn VAC back on
Reversing the change is the same configuration decision in the opposite direction:
- Stop the insecure server process.
- For a command-line launch, remove
-insecurefrom the executable’s switches. - For a Steam interface, select Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) again.
- Save the persistent service, script, container, or panel configuration that will be used on the next start.
- Start the server and verify that the new process is the intended instance before advertising it as secure.
Do not describe a server as VAC-secure merely because the switch was removed from a file. The process must have restarted with the secure configuration, and any wrapper that adds -insecure must also be corrected.

The practical rule is simple: use insecure mode for a defined, access-controlled purpose; keep the secure launch configuration for normal play; and verify which process is actually running before players connect.
