Factorio Set Recipe Not Working: Causes and Fixes

A practical Factorio guide to Set recipe failures: isolate red and green signals, use a positive researched recipe signal, clear assembler trash, and troubleshoot requester chests separately.

If a Factorio assembler shows “no recipe set,” refuses to switch, or chooses the wrong recipe, the fault is usually one of five things: the signal is filtered out, red and green inputs are adding an unintended signal, the recipe is not researched or compatible with that machine, leftover materials are in the assembler’s trash inventory, or a requester chest is disabled separately from the assembler. The quickest reliable fix is to isolate the circuit to one positive recipe signal, verify research and machine compatibility, clear the assembler’s input and trash slots, and then check requester-chest conditions.

Set recipe is not a simple “highest number wins” switch. Factorio applies a defined filter and priority order before it changes a crafting machine. Understanding that order makes the apparently random failures predictable.

How Factorio’s Set recipe control actually chooses a recipe

A crafting machine can receive circuit signals and use them to set its recipe. The machine first discards signals that are not eligible, then evaluates the remaining signals in a fixed priority order. A signal that looks correct on a combinator can therefore have no effect, while an unrelated signal on another wire can determine the result.

Signals that are ignored

Factorio Auxiliary Docs Version 2.1.21 documents two important filters:

  • Signals with a value of zero or a negative value are ignored.
  • Virtual signals, space-location signals, asteroid-chunk signals, and quality signals are ignored for Set recipe selection.

The value is the value that reaches the machine after circuit-network arithmetic. A constant combinator set to -1 is not a “lower priority” recipe request; it is no request at all. The same applies when two connected devices cancel one another and leave a net value of zero.

Priority order after filtering

Among eligible signals, Factorio uses this order:

Priority Signal class What must be true Typical implication
1 Recipe signal The recipe is researched and can be crafted in the connected machine. A valid direct recipe signal is selected immediately.
2 Item signal An eligible positive item signal remains after recipe signals are considered. An item signal can select a different recipe when no valid direct recipe signal wins.
3 Entity signal An eligible positive entity signal remains and higher classes did not resolve a recipe. Entity signals are a fallback, not a substitute for a valid researched recipe signal.
4 Fluid signal An eligible positive fluid signal remains and higher classes did not resolve a recipe. Fluid signals are evaluated last in the documented fallback order.

This ordering explains why sending an item, entity, or fluid signal “just to be safe” can produce an unexpected recipe. A direct, researched recipe signal has priority; fallback signals matter when no usable direct recipe signal is present.

Red and green wires are additive

The circuit-network rules sum red-wire and green-wire signals. They are not two independent recipe channels. If a red wire carries 1 electronic-circuit signal and a green wire carries 1 iron-gear-wheel signal, the machine sees both. If another connected combinator contributes a positive signal, that signal can become the winning candidate even though the combinator you are looking at appears correct.

Signals can also arrive through connected machines or other networked devices. A machine output configured for circuit transmission may be the hidden source of the extra value. Always inspect the complete network, not only the combinator immediately beside the assembler.

Diagnostic sequence: isolate the fault in the right order

Follow these steps in order. Each step removes one class of failure, so you do not spend time tuning combinators when the recipe is simply unavailable.

  1. Open the crafting machine. Confirm that the machine’s Set recipe control is enabled. Check the recipe technology in the technology screen and make sure it has been researched. Also verify that this machine type can craft the recipe; a researched recipe still cannot be assigned to an incompatible machine.
  2. Inspect both wire colors. Trace every red and green connection into the machine and into the combinators feeding it. Temporarily disconnect the red wire, observe the result, then reconnect it and disconnect the green wire. If the recipe changes when either color is removed, that wire contains an additional or conflicting signal.
  3. Replace the network with one test source. Disconnect the normal network and attach a single constant combinator that sends only the intended recipe signal at a positive value, such as 1. This is a diagnostic isolation step, not a requirement that the final design use a constant combinator.
  4. Check the signal’s class and value. Remove virtual, space-location, asteroid-chunk, and quality signals from the test. Set the intended recipe signal to a positive number. Confirm that no arithmetic combinator, decider, or subtraction operation reduces the final value to zero or below.
  5. Look for a higher-priority or unintended candidate. If the machine still chooses the wrong recipe, inspect item, entity, and fluid signals on the network. A positive fallback signal can be selected when no valid direct researched recipe signal is present. Remove these signals temporarily and test again.
  6. Clear the machine before switching. Empty the assembler’s input and trash slots. Ingredients left from the old recipe can block a recipe change even when the circuit signal is correct.
  7. Retest with the original automation. Reconnect one wire or one combinator at a time. The moment the failure returns, the last connection or signal source is the cause.

When the isolated test works but the full network does not, the assembler is functioning; the problem is signal composition. When even the isolated test fails, concentrate on research, compatibility, signal filtering, and leftover inventory.

Why the assembler picks the wrong recipe

The most common “wrong recipe” case is an unintended positive signal. Because red and green inputs are summed, adding a second wire can introduce a competing item, entity, or fluid signal. A recipe signal that you intended to be the only instruction may not be the only instruction the machine receives.

Use a single-source test

For troubleshooting, make the network deliberately boring: one constant combinator, one positive researched recipe signal, and one wire into the assembler. If that works, compare the signal list shown when the full network is connected. Remove unrelated outputs, or gate them so they are not positive at the same time as the recipe command.

Do not use unsupported signal types

A virtual signal can be useful for ordinary circuit logic, but it cannot select a recipe through Set recipe. The same limitation applies to space-location, asteroid-chunk, and quality signals. Convert the control logic into a supported recipe, item, entity, or fluid signal before it reaches the crafting machine, and ensure the resulting value is positive.

Understand fallback behavior

If the intended recipe signal is missing, unresearched, incompatible, filtered out, or non-positive, Factorio can proceed to item, then entity, then fluid signals. That fallback is why a machine may appear to “switch by itself”: it is responding to another eligible signal rather than ignoring the network entirely. Removing all fallback signals during testing reveals whether the direct recipe command is valid.

Recipe changes blocked by leftover ingredients

An assembler can refuse to change recipes when materials from the previous recipe remain in its input or trash inventory. Empty both areas before trying the switch again. This is especially important in designs that change recipes frequently, because the old ingredients may not be usable by the new recipe and therefore cannot be cleared automatically.

Factorio developer boskid explained the behavior on 18 December 2024:

“That is not a bug. Reason why assembler circuit set recipe works that way is two-fold: first it solves issue of infinite trash storage where amount of trash would accumulate in the trash inventory every time a recipe is changed or cleared, and second is that it forces players to take a look and realize there are items to be taken out that need to be handled.”

The practical consequence is straightforward: treat a recipe change as an inventory transition. Provide an intentional way to remove old ingredients before the next recipe is requested, rather than trying to force the machine to discard them indefinitely.

A safe switching routine

  1. Stop or disable the signal that requests the next recipe.
  2. Remove finished products and remaining ingredients from the machine’s input and output paths as appropriate.
  3. Empty the assembler’s trash inventory completely.
  4. Apply the new positive recipe signal.
  5. Re-enable ingredient supply only after the new recipe is visible in the machine.

This sequence prevents a rapid signal toggle from leaving materials stranded while the machine alternates between recipes.

Research and machine compatibility are hard requirements

A blueprint can contain a recipe that was not researched when the blueprint was placed. The blueprint may display the intended setup, but the machine cannot use that recipe until the relevant technology is researched. After researching it, set or paste the recipe again rather than assuming the old placement will automatically become active.

Factorio staff member Rseding91 described the rule on 28 February 2019:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Thanks for the report however this is working as intended: you can’t set a recipe without having it researched. To set a recipe means to use it and to use any recipe means it should be researched otherwise it bypasses the entire research system.”

Research status is separate from circuit correctness. A perfectly wired positive signal still fails if the technology is unavailable. Machine compatibility is separate as well: confirm that the recipe belongs in the specific crafting machine you are controlling.

When a requester chest looks broken

A requester chest is a separate system from the assembler’s Set recipe control. If the assembler shows the right recipe but ingredients never arrive, troubleshoot the requester chest independently.

Recipe copy-paste behavior

The requester-chest documentation states that copying an assembler recipe to a requester chest configures enough ingredients for approximately 30 seconds of continuous crafting. This is a convenience setting for the chest’s requests; it does not prove that the assembler is receiving a valid recipe signal or that the logistic network can reach the chest.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these conditions

  • Logistic-network coverage: Confirm that the chest is inside the relevant logistic network and that provider or storage sources can reach it.
  • Requests: Open the chest and verify that the expected ingredient requests exist after copying the recipe. A copied recipe can be outdated if the assembler’s recipe changed later.
  • Circuit enable condition: A requester chest disabled by its circuit condition will not request items. Inspect the condition and the signals feeding it.
  • Wire scope: The chest’s circuit wires may be receiving different red and green totals from the assembler’s wires. Check each network separately.
  • Inventory capacity: Make sure requested items are not being blocked by a full chest or by another inserter arrangement.

If the chest is disabled, fixing the assembler’s recipe signal will not make the chest request anything. Conversely, enabling the chest will not repair an unresearched or incompatible assembler recipe.

Assembler-only versus assembler-plus-requester designs

Area Assembler only Assembler plus requester chest
Recipe switching Controlled directly by the machine’s Set recipe signal; input and trash inventories must be clear. Still controlled by the assembler; the chest does not override recipe selection.
Ingredient supply Inserters, belts, bots, or another local supply system feed the machine. The requester asks the logistic network for ingredients, subject to its requests and enable condition.
Circuit enable The assembler’s own enable and Set recipe controls are the relevant checks. The requester can be circuit-disabled and stop requesting even while the assembler remains enabled.
Network coverage Not required unless the chosen inserter or supply design uses it. Required for the requester to obtain items from logistic providers or storage.
Leftover handling Old ingredients in input or trash can block a recipe change. The same assembler restriction applies; the requester does not automatically solve old trash.

Use this distinction to identify the failing subsystem: recipe displayed incorrectly means inspect the assembler circuit; recipe correct but no ingredients means inspect the requester and logistic network.

Common symptoms and the specific fix

Symptom Likely cause First corrective action
“No recipe set” after wiring Set recipe is disabled, signal is zero or negative, signal type is ignored, or the recipe is unresearched. Enable Set recipe, send one positive supported recipe signal, and verify research.
Recipe changes to an unrelated item An item, entity, or fluid signal is present on the summed red/green network. Disconnect each wire color and remove fallback signals until only the intended command remains.
Recipe refuses to change Old ingredients remain in the input or trash inventory. Empty both inventories, then apply the new recipe signal.
Blueprint machine stays blank The recipe technology was not researched when the blueprint was placed. Research the technology and set or paste the recipe again.
Assembler is correct but requester is empty Requester is circuit-disabled, outside logistic coverage, or has no valid requests. Check the chest’s enable condition, network coverage, and copied requests.
Works with one wire, fails with both Red and green signals are being summed and introduce a competing positive value. Trace the second wire and remove or gate its unintended output.

A reliable pattern for future circuit builds

Design the recipe-selection portion so it can be tested independently from production. Keep one clearly identified signal source for the recipe command, label or isolate unrelated monitoring signals, and provide a deliberate path for clearing old ingredients before a change. During commissioning, test with a single positive signal and reconnect the production network incrementally.

For a system that selects among several recipes, make sure only the intended recipe signal is positive at the moment of selection. If your control logic naturally produces zero or negative values, add a conversion stage that produces a positive supported signal for the chosen recipe and no positive candidates for the others. Do not rely on a virtual signal as the final Set recipe input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, test both transitions: from an empty machine to the first recipe, and from one active recipe to another while ingredients are present. Many builds appear correct on startup but fail on the second transition because the trash inventory was never handled.

What to check before asking for help

  • The exact machine type and recipe are known.
  • The recipe technology is researched in the current save.
  • Set recipe is enabled in the machine interface.
  • The final signal value is positive.
  • No virtual, space-location, asteroid-chunk, or quality signal is being used for selection.
  • Red and green wires have both been inspected and tested separately.
  • Item, entity, and fluid fallback signals have been removed during isolation.
  • The assembler input and trash slots are empty before switching.
  • A requester chest, if present, is inside logistic coverage, has requests, and is not circuit-disabled.
