How do you stop an Xbox controller from opening Game Bar?
Turn off the controller-specific Game Bar shortcut in Windows 11 Settings. This is the safest option when pressing the Xbox button, a fight-stick button, or another controller input opens the overlay unintentionally.

Does disabling Game Bar also disable Game Mode?
No. Game Bar and Game Mode are separate Windows features. Microsoft lists AutoGameModeEnabled under HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftGameBar as the value associated with Game Mode, so turning off Game Mode is not required merely to disable the Game Bar overlay. Change Game Mode only if you separately want that gaming optimization behavior disabled.
How can an administrator disable GameDVR on managed Windows devices?
An administrator can use the AllowGameDVR policy under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting. Microsoft maps the policy to SoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsGameDVR, with 0 meaning recording is not allowed and 1 meaning recording is allowed.
The policy is documented for Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. Microsoft’s policy documentation includes a compatibility note whose enforcement wording is limited to Windows 10 desktop, even though the applicable operating-system field says Windows 10 and later. Administrators should therefore validate the policy on the organization’s current Windows 11 build instead of assuming that the policy suppresses every Game Bar entry point on every edition. Should you remove XboxGamingOverlay with PowerShell?
Remove the XboxGamingOverlay package only when you specifically want the package gone and understand the recovery implications. Disabling its triggers or capture behavior is generally the lower-risk choice.

Get-AppxPackage -Name *XboxGamingOverlay* | Remove-AppxPackageMicrosoft warns that Appx removal can be irreversible, that commands must target the correct package and user context, and that some system apps cannot be removed. Removing the package can also leave Windows or another application unable to handle the ms-gamingoverlay protocol, producing an error when something tries to launch the missing overlay. Package removal may interfere with Xbox-related functions or games that expect the overlay components. Review Microsoft’s Appx troubleshooting guidance and its Windows app removal guidance before proceeding.
What should you do if Game Bar still appears?
If Xbox Game Bar still opens after a change, check the specific trigger rather than repeating every method.
- Controller still opens Game Bar: Return to Settings search for Xbox and verify that Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller is off.
- Win+G or capture still works: Confirm both registry values exist under the exact paths and contain DWORD data
0, then sign out or restart Windows. - Settings labels do not match: Use Settings search instead of relying on a particular Gaming submenu. Labels can vary by Windows 11 release, language, device type, and Microsoft UI updates.
- A policy does not take effect: Confirm the Windows edition, policy scope, and current build. Managed-device policy behavior should be validated rather than assumed.
- An
ms-gamingoverlayerror appears: The missing XboxGamingOverlay package may be the cause. Consider restoring the package through supported Windows or Microsoft Store recovery procedures instead of deleting additional registry keys or Xbox packages indiscriminately.
Windows 11 release lines and available controls can change over time. Microsoft’s current release information lists 26H1 for new devices and 25H2 and 24H2 as general supported release lines on its Windows 11 release information page.

What can you use instead for screen recording?
Disabling Xbox Game Bar does not remove every Windows 11 screen-recording option. Microsoft identifies Snipping Tool as an inbox Windows 11 screen recorder and also lists Clipchamp as another recording option. Snipping Tool is the most direct built-in replacement when you still need occasional screen recording without the Game Bar overlay; see Microsoft’s screen-recording and Steps Recorder guidance.
Does disabling Game Bar disable Xbox mode?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s newer Xbox mode or full-screen gaming experience is a separate Windows 11 feature for supported devices and markets, applying to Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. Microsoft says Xbox mode can expose entry points through Game Bar and Task View, but disabling basic Game Bar or GameDVR controls should not be described as automatically disabling Xbox mode on every device.
