The most reliable way to find unfamiliar video-game franchises is to build a repeatable discovery loop instead of waiting for blockbuster announcements: search by genres, themes, and mechanics; inspect the creators behind games you enjoy; follow those creators; sample upcoming releases through demos; and use the independent-game spotlights on the console you already own. Steam offers the broadest combination of open catalog search, recommendations, curator lists, creator pages, and demos. Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox provide more selective official channels. None is complete or guaranteed to favor small studios, so combine at least two methods and verify availability in your region.
What “new franchise” means in this guide
“New” does not have to mean unreleased. It can mean a series you have never played, a studio’s older catalog you have overlooked, or an upcoming game that has not launched yet. A first entry may eventually become a franchise, but a showcase listing or a demo does not prove that a sequel is planned. Treat “franchise discovery” as finding a creator, series, or first game worth following—not as a promise that every candidate will grow into a long-running property.

The platforms also use indie and independent as their own labels. Those labels are useful filters, but they do not establish that every small studio is independent or that every game on an indie page is a brand-new series. Use the pages as discovery surfaces, then read the individual store listing for the game’s developer, publisher, release status, and regional availability.

Start with your taste, not a publisher list
Write down two or three things you already enjoy before opening a store. Make them specific enough to search: “turn-based tactics with short missions,” “cozy farming without combat,” “first-person exploration with environmental puzzles,” or “two-player local action.” Add a mood and a tolerance for complexity. For example, “tense science fiction, but playable in 30-minute sessions” is more useful than simply “science fiction.”

This creates a taste map with three layers:
- Genre: role-playing, strategy, racing, adventure, simulation, platforming, horror, and so on.
- Theme or setting: folklore, space stations, historical cities, cooking, detective work, or abstract worlds.
- Mechanic or structure: deck-building, stealth, colony management, precision movement, branching dialogue, procedural runs, or cooperative play.
Search one layer at a time, then combine two. A game that shares a mechanic but changes the setting can reveal a new series without taking you outside your comfort zone. Conversely, combining too many narrow terms can hide worthwhile games because a store’s tags are applied inconsistently.
Use Steam as an open-ended discovery engine
Steam’s discovery features are several separate routes rather than one master recommendation system. Its documented tools include searches by tags and descriptive terms, personalized suggestions, curator recommendations, and the Discovery Queue. Use them for different jobs: search to explore a concept deliberately, recommendations to surface adjacent tastes, curators to borrow a human shortlist, and the queue to process a manageable set of unfamiliar titles.
Search by tags and descriptions
- Open the store search and begin with one familiar genre or mechanic. Try “turn-based tactics,” “metroidvania,” or “cozy management,” then inspect the tags attached to results.
- Replace a broad term with a neighboring one. If “strategy” is too wide, try “tactical,” “grand strategy,” “tower defense,” or a mechanic such as “automation.”
- Add a descriptive phrase when the store supports it. A phrase such as “local co-op” or “short sessions” can find games that a publisher-based search would never show you.
- Open several results in new tabs and compare their tags. Repeated tags reveal the vocabulary that the store uses for your taste; use that vocabulary in the next search.
Do not treat tags as objective classifications. A developer, publisher, or community may apply them differently, and a promising game may have an incomplete tag set. Read the short description and check screenshots or a trailer before deciding that a result fits.
Process the Discovery Queue deliberately
The Discovery Queue turns browsing into a finite session. Move through a few titles, mark games that interest you, and use the “not interested” or ignore control when a recommendation clearly misses your taste. That feedback reduces repeated suggestions of the same kind. It is not a guarantee that the algorithm will reveal a great franchise, but it prevents an unhelpful queue from dominating future sessions.
Use the queue after a focused search rather than as your only source. A queue can reinforce your existing behavior; a deliberate tag search is more likely to expose a neighboring subgenre you have not tried.
Use curator lists as a second opinion
Curator recommendations are human-made lists attached to a point of view. Look for curators whose explanations match your priorities—short campaigns, accessibility options, local multiplayer, or unusual narrative design—rather than simply choosing the largest follower count. Read the reason for each recommendation and then verify the current store page. Curator coverage is selective, and a list may reflect one person’s taste, hardware, or tolerance for unfinished features.

Turn one good game into a creator trail
When a game works for you, stop browsing the entire catalog and investigate the people who made it. A Steam developer or publisher homepage can show other releases and series associated with that creator. This is often the fastest route from one unfamiliar title to several related games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the developer and publisher links on the game’s store page. Check whether the creator has a coherent series, several experiments in the same genre, or a single release.
- Read the creator’s full release list. Older games may be less visible in storefront recommendations but can explain the design ideas that led to the game you liked.
- Follow the creator if you want future signals. Steam says following can add recent releases to recommendations and send release notifications.
- Separate “same creator” from “same series.” A studio may change genres, while a publisher may distribute games it did not develop. Use the series label and description to confirm a direct connection.
Following is more useful than bookmarking a single page when your goal is franchise discovery. It creates a stream of updates while preserving your ability to ignore individual games that do not fit.
Save candidates and tune the signal
Use a wishlist or the platform’s follow function for games you might play later. Keep a short note outside the store—such as “looks good for two-player evenings” or “wait for performance reports”—so your list remains actionable. A long, unreviewed wishlist becomes another form of noise.
- Wishlist: a holding area for games you may buy or revisit.
- Follow: an update signal for releases and announcements where the platform supports it.
- Ignore or not interested: a way to tell recommendations that a repeated theme, format, or title is not for you.
Review the list at the start of each month. Remove games that no longer match your hardware, available time, or preferred price. The goal is not to collect every candidate; it is to maintain a small set that you can actually evaluate.
Try upcoming games through Steam Next Fest
For unreleased PC games, Steam Next Fest is the clearest try-before-you-buy route documented by Valve. Steamworks describes it as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” Valve’s documentation says the event recurs three times a year—in February, June, and October—but the dates for a particular edition can change, so check the current Steam event page before planning around it.
A practical Next Fest routine
- Before the event, choose a narrow brief. For example, test only cooperative games, narrative adventures, or tactical titles.
- During the event, install several demos rather than one. A broad sample prevents the first attractive trailer from determining your entire opinion.
- Give each demo a fixed trial window. Twenty to sixty minutes is enough to judge controls, pacing, performance, and whether the central mechanic interests you.
- Record a decision immediately. Wishlist games you want to track, follow those with a firm release interest, and remove the rest from your active list.
- Recheck the store page later. A demo reflects a particular build; the final release can change features, performance, price, or regional availability.
A demo proves that you can try a build, not that the final game will meet every expectation. Pay attention to the build date, system requirements, controller support, accessibility options, and whether the demo includes the intended core loop.

Use official Nintendo and PlayStation indie spotlights
Nintendo Indie World
Nintendo’s Indie World pages collect and feature independent games for Switch. They are useful when you want a curated shortlist tied to a console you already own. Open the individual game’s store listing after finding it in a presentation or roundup; check its release status, supported languages, controls, age rating, price, and whether a demo is offered in your storefront.
Indie World is a selection, not a complete index of independent Switch releases. The reviewed pages are US-facing examples, so catalog entries, prices, ratings, release timing, and demo availability can differ by country. Switch owners outside the United States should change to their local Nintendo store before making a purchase decision.
PlayStation Indies
PlayStation Indies highlights selected independent games and includes downloadable demos on the relevant pages. Use the spotlight to discover a title, then follow the store link to confirm the platform version, release date, current price, language support, accessibility information, and demo availability.
PlayStation’s spotlight pages are also curated rather than comprehensive. Their US examples should not be treated as a worldwide catalog: regional storefronts can show different products, prices, ratings, and release schedules. A game shown in a feature may be unavailable or may launch later in your country.
Make Xbox’s ID@Xbox channel part of the loop
ID@Xbox is another official route to independent releases. Browse its featured games for ideas, then open the current Xbox store listing for each candidate. Some selected titles are promoted as playable through Game Pass, but the page does not establish that every listed game is included in the subscription or available in every region.
- Find a candidate on ID@Xbox. Note the game’s exact title and developer.
- Open the current Xbox listing. Check supported consoles, PC requirements where applicable, release status, and purchase options.
- Verify Game Pass separately. Look for the title in your own region’s current catalog rather than relying on a general feature page.
- Check the trial path. If there is no demo or subscription access, decide whether the store’s refund policy and your play time make the purchase risk acceptable.
Subscription catalogs are volatile. A game can join or leave a service, and availability can differ by plan and country, so record the date of any access decision.

Compare discovery routes by the job you need done
| Route | Best for | Timing | How much curation? | Try-before-buy signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam tags and description search | Exploring a specific genre, theme, or mechanic | Mostly released games, with some upcoming listings | Low; broad catalog browsing | Store information; demos vary |
| Steam recommendations and Discovery Queue | Finding adjacent games after you have an established taste profile | Mostly released games | Algorithmic | Depends on each listing |
| Steam curator lists | Borrowing a human shortlist with a stated point of view | Released games and occasional upcoming coverage | High and subjective | Depends on each listing |
| Steam creator pages and follows | Tracing a studio’s other releases and future work | Released and upcoming announcements | Creator-centered | Usually store pages or demos |
| Steam Next Fest | Sampling upcoming PC games | Event-based; documented for February, June, and October | Event curation plus open browsing | Playable demos are the defining feature |
| Nintendo Indie World | Finding selected independent games for Switch | Released and upcoming announcements | High; official selection | Check the regional store for demos |
| PlayStation Indies | Finding selected independent games on PlayStation | Released and upcoming announcements | High; official selection | Downloadable demos are highlighted on relevant pages |
| ID@Xbox | Finding independent Xbox releases and possible subscription access | Released and upcoming games | High on featured pages | Verify a demo or current Game Pass listing |

- Choose a discovery brief. Pick two genres, one theme, one mechanic, and a constraint such as “under 20 hours” or “supports local co-op.”
- Search the platform you own. On Steam, combine tags and descriptive terms. On a console, begin with its store search and official indie spotlight.
- Shortlist five games. Read descriptions, inspect creator names, and eliminate candidates that fail your hardware, language, rating, or multiplayer requirements.
- Trace one creator deeply. Open the developer or publisher page, identify other releases, and follow the developer if you want future notifications.
- Separate released from upcoming. Put available games in a play-now list and upcoming games in a tracking list. Do not judge an unreleased title by a final-game standard.
- Use a low-risk test. Install a demo, play through a trial period, or confirm a subscription listing in your region before buying.
- Give feedback to the platform. Mark unsuitable recommendations as not interested or ignored so future suggestions become less repetitive.
- Revisit after a month. Check creator updates, event dates, store changes, and whether a wishlist title now has a demo or a confirmed release.
How to tell whether a candidate is worth following
Use a compact checklist instead of judging a game from its logo or announcement trailer:
- Identity: Is the developer clearly named, and is the title part of a series or a standalone debut?
- Fit: Does the actual gameplay match the tags, or only the artwork and premise?
- Evidence: Can you play a demo, watch representative gameplay, or read a detailed store description?
- Practicality: Does it run on your platform, support your preferred controller and language, and fit your available time?
- Continuity: Does following the creator offer a meaningful chance of hearing about related releases?
- Risk: Is the game upcoming, early in development, subscription-dependent, or subject to regional restrictions?
Keep a candidate when it meets your fit and practicality tests even if it is not from a known publisher. Drop it when the only reason to keep watching is fear of missing out.
When recommendations keep missing your taste
The same famous games dominate every list
Narrow the search by mechanics or unusual settings instead of broad genres. Then open a creator page from a smaller result and follow the studio rather than continuing to scroll through a general bestseller list.
Every result is technically relevant but uninteresting
Your tags may describe the theme while missing the structure you care about. Add a constraint such as “turn-based,” “single-player,” “short sessions,” or “local co-op,” and read descriptions for how a game is actually played.

Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
An event demo feels polished but the game is uncertain
Record what the demo establishes and what it does not. It can show controls and the central loop, but it cannot guarantee final performance, content length, price, or launch timing. Follow the creator and recheck the current store page before buying.
A console spotlight does not match your storefront
Switch to your country’s store, search the exact title, and verify the listing directly. Do not infer local price, release date, rating, language support, or demo access from a US-facing feature page.
Game Pass access is unclear
Search the live catalog while signed into the account and region you will use. Treat a general ID@Xbox mention as a discovery lead, not as proof of current subscription access.

What these methods cannot tell you
These channels document ways to browse and sample games; they do not establish that one method finds better games than another. A recommendation engine can miss a brilliant debut, a curator can overlook a series, and an official showcase can emphasize a selected group rather than the full catalog. Use multiple routes when you want breadth, and use demos or store evidence when you want lower purchase risk.
There is also no reason to assume that every unfamiliar game is a franchise in waiting. Some are complete one-off projects, some are experiments from an established studio, and some are the first release from a team that may never make another game. Discovering them is still valuable: the objective is to find games and creators that fit you, then decide whether following their future work is worthwhile.
Build a sustainable habit
Set aside one short session each week or month for discovery, not an endless daily scroll. A productive session can be as simple as one Steam tag search, one creator-page investigation, and one demo or console spotlight check. Keep your shortlist small, follow creators whose work you genuinely want to see, and use ignore controls aggressively when a platform repeats the wrong signals.
Over time, this loop changes where your recommendations come from. Instead of starting with the largest publisher announcement, you start with a mechanic, a creator, a demo, or a curated list—and let the game itself determine whether it becomes the next series you follow.
