Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: you can often begin with a sequel, but the amount of story and character context you miss varies by series. Check the sequel’s official FAQ or store page for three signals: whether it is described as standalone or newcomer-friendly, whether it includes an official recap, and whether the publisher says earlier games add important context. Those checks tell you whether to start now, watch a recap, or play the original first.
“Sequel” does not automatically mean “play the original first”
Publishers use the word sequel for games with very different relationships to earlier entries. One sequel may tell a mostly self-contained story in a familiar universe. Another may resume a cliff-hanger immediately, assume you know the cast, and build its biggest emotional moments around events you have not seen.

That is why there is no universal play-order rule. The useful question is not “Is this game number two?” but “How much does this specific game depend on what came before?” Official guidance can answer that more reliably than a generic franchise reputation.

The three questions to answer before you launch
1. Is the sequel designed to stand on its own?
Look for phrases such as “standalone,” “welcomes newcomers,” or “no prior knowledge required.” These statements describe the intended entry point, not a guarantee that every player will understand every reference.
Remedy’s FAQ says, “Alan Wake 2 is a sequel but set up as a stand-alone experience.” It also explains that returning players can find lore connections. In practical terms, a new player should be able to follow the main premise, while someone familiar with the earlier game may notice additional meaning in characters, locations, or world-building. Read Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 FAQ.
2. Is there an official recap?
A recap is the fastest way to recover names, relationships, and the previous game’s ending without committing to a full playthrough. Check the title screen, extras, tutorials, or the publisher’s support page after installing the game.

Square Enix places a REMAKE recap in REBIRTH’s in-game menu. Remedy’s FAQ points players to a “Previously on” video for Alan Wake 2. A recap may cover essential plot beats but still omit the slower character development that makes a continuation more powerful.

3. Does earlier knowledge add optional context or essential setup?
These are different experiences. You may be able to understand the next objective and finish the campaign while missing why a reunion matters, why a villain is feared, or why a seemingly minor location carries emotional weight.
PlayStation’s FAQ for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 makes that distinction explicit: “You can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, but we recommend you explore previous titles to fully experience the emerging narrative.” In other words, prior games are not a barrier to entry, but they can improve the payoff. Read the official Spider-Man 2 FAQ.
A practical decision method
- Open the official game page or FAQ. Search within it for “standalone,” “new players,” “previously,” “recap,” or “recommended.” Treat a clear publisher statement as stronger evidence than a forum assumption.
- Classify the continuity. Decide whether the sequel is a self-contained story, a direct continuation, or a hybrid that works either way but rewards background knowledge.
- Find the shortest catch-up option. Use an in-game recap or an official “Previously on” video when one exists. Avoid unofficial plot summaries if you want to minimize spoilers from later entries.
- Choose based on your priority. Start the sequel now if you mainly want its gameplay or current community discussion. Play the original first if experiencing character arcs in order matters more to you.
- Reassess after the opening. If the sequel introduces unfamiliar names faster than you can track them, pause and use the recap or a spoiler-controlled story summary. If the setup is clear, continue without treating every reference as homework.
How different kinds of sequels affect newcomers
| Continuity type | What to check | Likely newcomer experience | Best approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone entry | The publisher explicitly calls it standalone or says each game has its own story. | Main plot should be understandable without the original; returning players may catch extra links. | Start with the sequel, then use an optional recap if available. |
| Direct continuation | The official description says it resumes the previous game’s events or characters. | Basic objectives may be clear, but motivations and emotional stakes can arrive without setup. | Play the original or watch the publisher’s recap before starting. |
| Newcomer-friendly continuation | The publisher says new players are supported while confirming the story continues. | You can follow the campaign, but some relationships and reveals may have less impact. | Use a recap if you want context; play in order for maximum narrative payoff. |
| Anthology or reset | The series changes its cast, setting, or premise between entries. | Earlier games may be largely irrelevant, even if the title carries a shared brand. | Check the exact entry rather than assuming continuity from the number. |
The table is a decision aid, not a universal rating system. Official descriptions can establish how a game is intended to welcome players, but they cannot predict whether you personally will enjoy entering midway through a character arc.

What you may miss by skipping the original
Plot facts
A sequel may restate the immediate situation, but it can assume you know how the previous game ended. You might encounter a changed political order, a new ability, or a character’s altered status with only a brief explanation. A recap usually covers these facts in compressed form.

Character relationships
Continuations often treat established friendships, rivalries, betrayals, or romances as existing history. The sequel can tell you that two characters trust each other without recreating the scenes that earned that trust. If your main reason for playing is character drama, the original is more valuable than a plot-only summary.
World and lore connections
Standalone design does not mean isolation. A sequel may contain references, returning locations, or background details aimed at longtime players. Remedy specifically notes lore connections for returning Alan Wake players even while presenting Alan Wake 2 as a standalone experience.
Mechanical continuity
Some sequels explain their systems from scratch; others expect you to recognize controls, terminology, or a previous game’s upgrade logic. This is separate from story dependence. A game can be narratively accessible but mechanically dense, or narratively complex while teaching its gameplay clearly.

Case studies from official guidance
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
Square Enix’s wording is unusually direct: REBIRTH is a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers, and each FINAL FANTASY has its own story. The in-game REMAKE recap gives first-time players a supported way to learn the immediate background. If you want the full emotional journey of the modern remake project, playing REMAKE first remains the richer order; if you mainly want to enter REBIRTH, the official framing says you can do so.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
PlayStation separates enjoyment from completeness. It says prior story or character knowledge is not required, then recommends earlier titles so players can fully experience the developing narrative. That is a useful model for many sequels: the campaign can be playable on its own, while earlier games provide emotional context rather than a mandatory instruction manual.
Alan Wake 2
Remedy describes the game as a sequel arranged as a standalone experience and points newcomers toward a “Previously on” video. The same FAQ acknowledges connections for returning players. This is the hybrid case: start if you want, but use the official catch-up material when you want a firmer grasp of the shared lore.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
Xbox Wire’s 2022 discussion describes Requiem as continuing Innocence while explaining that players can enjoy it without having experienced the earlier game. The publisher’s goal was to welcome newcomers without discarding the ongoing story. That makes a recap or concise summary particularly useful: it can preserve the continuity without turning the predecessor into a strict prerequisite. Read the Xbox Wire interview.
When playing the original first is worth your time
- You care about story order. Seeing causes before consequences gives character decisions and reveals their intended weight.
- The sequel is marketed as a continuation. Directly resumed plots are more likely to assume details that a short recap cannot fully reproduce.
- You have enough time and access. Consider whether the original is available on your platform and whether its controls, pacing, or presentation are acceptable to you.
- You dislike spoilers but want context. Playing the earlier game avoids learning its twists from a summary.
- You are invested in the cast. Relationship-driven stories benefit most from experiencing the first game’s interactions rather than reading a list of events.
Do not force yourself through an inaccessible original solely to satisfy a play-order rule. An official recap can be the better choice when the older game is unavailable, substantially different, or simply not enjoyable for you.
When starting with the sequel makes sense
- The publisher calls it standalone or newcomer-friendly. That is the clearest indication that the entry point is intentional.
- An official recap is built in. You have a supported way to recover essential background.
- You primarily want the new gameplay. Waiting through an entire earlier campaign may delay the experience you actually want.
- The series uses separate stories. Anthology structures and major setting changes reduce the value of chronological play.
- Your interest is exploratory. You can sample the sequel, then decide whether the original’s world deserves your time.
How to use a recap without spoiling the sequel
- Prefer the recap supplied in the sequel’s own menu or the publisher’s official channel.
- Watch or read only material labeled for the immediately preceding game. Avoid “complete series explained” videos that may reveal later twists.
- Stop once you understand the opening premise, principal characters, and unresolved conflict. More information is not always better.
- Keep a short note of names and factions rather than searching each one separately; search results can expose spoilers.
- Return to the game’s glossary, codex, or recap menu when a reference becomes important.
Questions to ask on the store page or FAQ
- Does the publisher explicitly say the game is standalone?
- Does it recommend playing an earlier entry, and does it explain why?
- Is there an in-game recap, a “Previously on” video, or a story summary?
- Does the description say the sequel resumes the previous game’s events?
- Are returning characters central, or is the cast and setting mostly new?
If the page answers only one of these questions, treat the remaining uncertainty honestly. A game’s marketing can establish intended accessibility, not guarantee that every player will connect with its story.
Bottom line for an unplayed original
Start with the sequel when its official materials call it standalone or newcomer-friendly, especially if a recap is available. Play the original first when the sequel directly resumes its plot and your priority is complete narrative and character context. In the middle cases, watch the official recap and begin the sequel; you can always return to the earlier game if the missing history becomes important. The right order is specific to the franchise, so verify the exact title instead of applying a rule from another series.
