To get rid of a hero in Darkest Dungeon, open that hero’s status screen in the Hamlet and choose the dismiss control. If you only need room for recruits, consider upgrading the Stage Coach’s roster capacity instead.
How to dismiss a hero
- Return to the Hamlet and open your roster.
- Select the hero you want to remove and open the hero’s status screen.
- Choose the dismiss control. An older Steam Community answer places it below the icon for changing the hero’s name; if your interface differs, look on the individual hero screen for the dismiss option. Steam Community discussion
Dismissing removes that hero from your roster. The game recognizes the action with the “Dismiss your first hero” achievement. Steam achievements
If you need a roster slot, expand capacity
The Stage Coach is where you recruit heroes, and its upgrades include roster capacity. Check its available upgrades before dismissing someone you want to keep. Stage Coach Hamlet
If the problem is a negative quirk
Dismissing is not a way to change or remove a quirk. For quirk treatment while keeping the hero, use the Sanitarium. Sanitarium
