To protect blind box figures, keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat, dust them gently, and store them in a clean, ventilated place you can inspect. A display case can reduce dust and handling, but it cannot make a sunny or hot spot safe. Because blind box figures may use different plastics, paints, and finishes, follow the maker’s care instructions rather than treating one cleaning or storage method as safe for every figure.
Choose a safe place to display figures
Start with location, whether you use an open shelf or a case. Choose a sturdy, level surface away from direct sun and strong light, radiators, fireplaces, heaters, air-conditioning vents, and heat-emitting equipment. Sideshow recommends a temperature-controlled environment and a steady, level surface for collectibles (Sideshow care tips).
Light damage builds over time. It can fade or change color and may contribute to yellowing and embrittlement; ultraviolet and infrared radiation are concerns, but visible light can also damage collections. The Library of Congress explains that light damage is cumulative (Limiting Light Damage). The Canadian Conservation Institute’s figures of 150 lux maximum illumination and UV below 75 microwatts per lumen are collections-care recommendations, not universal home-display targets for toys (CCI Notes 15/1: Care of Objects Made from Rubber and Plastic).
Higher temperatures accelerate deterioration in plastics and rubber. Avoid hot display lighting, too: a closed case can still warm up if its light source produces heat. A generic acrylic or glass case should not be assumed to filter UV; rely on product-specific specifications if UV protection is important.

Open shelf or enclosed display case?
Both can work when placed away from light and heat. The practical trade-off is between easier access and less exposure to dust or casual handling.

This is a practical comparison, not a controlled test of display products. Measure both the figure and the available shelf space before buying a case.

Store figures so they can be checked
Use the original packaging when it is suitable
The original box and inserts can help protect a figure during a move or temporary storage if they fit and are in good condition. Sideshow recommends keeping original packaging for storage or moving (Sideshow care tips). But an unopened box is not a guarantee against deterioration: Good Smile Company advises storing figures in a ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and strong fluorescent light, and periodically taking them out of packaging or containers (Checklist after receiving your figures, June 28, 2023).
Choose additional containers carefully
For an additional storage enclosure, consider containers made from polyethylene, polypropylene, or polyester without added slip or coating agents. The Library of Congress identifies these as stable plastics for collection storage and advises against PVC and unknown plastics (General Preservation FAQ). This is general collections guidance; it does not certify a particular container or mean a figure should touch the container directly. Check fit, inserts, and any materials that contact the figure.

Make storage easy to inspect periodically. Avoid relying on attics, basements, or garages as long-term storage by default: conditions and water risks can be difficult to control in those spaces, according to the Library of Congress.
Dust and handle figures gently
Use a clean, soft detail brush or microfiber cloth, moving gently and supporting the figure where needed. Sideshow recommends both for dusting. Avoid aggressive brushing, which may catch delicate parts or finishes.

There is no universal safe wet-cleaning recipe for blind box figures. Their materials and finishes vary, so do not assume alcohol, solvents, soaking, or other household cleaners are suitable. For stains or damp cleaning, check the maker’s instructions; if the figure is valuable or fragile, ask a qualified conservator.

There is no established single ideal temperature or humidity for every blind box figure. Material, construction, and condition matter. The National Archives of Australia cites conditions near 20 °C and below 60% relative humidity in its general object-preservation guidance, but those figures are not a tested universal target for toys (Preserving objects). The most practical household priorities are avoiding heat, damp or poorly ventilated storage, and large environmental swings.
