Dragon Age: Origins vs. Inquisition: Which Should You Play First?

Origins is the best first stop for release-order story context, but Inquisition is a valid starting point with an official world-state setup option.

Play Dragon Age: Origins first if you want the series’ story context in release order. Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition first if its later-era, open-world presentation appeals more or you would rather begin with that game. Inquisition has an official option for setting up a prior world state, so playing the earlier games is not required.

Which game should you play first?

If you want… Start with… Why
Release order and more story context Dragon Age: Origins It is the earlier game, and Inquisition can reflect a world history based on choices from earlier titles.
A newer-feeling, open-world presentation Dragon Age: Inquisition BioWare describes it as a story-driven open-world RPG with large environments.
To skip replaying earlier games but still set prior history Dragon Age: Inquisition Dragon Age Keep was designed to let players configure a world state without replaying Origins or Dragon Age II.
The simplest route with less missing background Dragon Age: Origins It provides the earlier story foundation. This is a recommendation, not a requirement.

What do the two games set up?

Dragon Age: Origins

EA announced a North American launch date of November 3, 2009, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Its announcement listed different European dates: Xbox 360 and PC on November 6, with the PlayStation 3 release later that month. Those are historical launch details, not a statement about current availability. BioWare frames the story around a Grey Warden facing a Blight and a betrayal. EA’s release announcement and BioWare’s Dragon Age overview provide the official descriptions.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Inquisition centers on the Inquisitor leading a party amid turmoil in Thedas. Its official description emphasizes a story-driven RPG with large environments, challenging combat, complex characters, and difficult decisions. BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah described the world-state feature as a way to import the consequences of earlier choices; he also noted that some consequences may be subtle or appear in a future story. See EA’s Inquisition page and BioWare’s Dragon Age Keep announcement.

Can you start with Inquisition?

Yes. BioWare said Dragon Age Keep lets players customize a world state based on Origins and Dragon Age II, then import that history when starting Inquisition. In the announcement, Darrah wrote: “Even if you don’t go back and re-play the previous games, you can still establish that scenario as part of your world state, and import it at the start of a new DAI game to see the consequences of your actions.” The feature was presented as a way for newcomers to set prior events without replaying the earlier titles.

That announcement dates to 2013, so it establishes the feature’s intended function, not whether Keep is accessible today. Check the service’s current availability before relying on it for setup. The cited sources also do not establish that every earlier choice creates a major visible consequence in Inquisition.

Does Inquisition require Origins?

No. The Keep option is specifically intended to let players establish a prior scenario without replaying earlier games, and the official description does not frame Origins as a prerequisite. Playing it first remains the stronger choice if you want the earlier story context, but beginning with Inquisition is a supported path.

Which starting point fits your priorities?

  • Choose Origins first if following the story foundation and release order matters most to you.
  • Choose Inquisition first if its large open environments are the main attraction, or you prefer to begin with the later game.
  • Use a configured world state if you start with Inquisition and want to establish a version of prior events without replaying the previous games, subject to Keep’s current availability.

The official sources describe Inquisition’s open-world structure, but they do not provide a detailed, system-by-system combat comparison between the two games. They are not a basis for claiming one combat system is objectively better.
