Run the transfer from your own computer, not from the VPS. With OpenSSH installed, the standard command is scp user@VPS-IP:/remote/path/client.ovpn ./. Replace the account name, server address, and remote path, then enter the VPS account password or approve your SSH key. The file will be written to the computer’s current folder. If the VPS uses a non-default SSH port, add uppercase -P, for example scp -P 2222 [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn ./.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
This guide shows how to locate the profile, copy it with SCP or an SFTP application, solve the common permission failures, and handle the downloaded file safely. An .ovpn profile can include certificates and private client-key material, so treat it like a password rather than an ordinary configuration file.

What you need before starting
You need four pieces of information:
- The VPS hostname or IP address.
- The SSH username that can log in to the server.
- The SSH port. Port
22is the default; use the actual port if your server was hardened or configured differently. - The complete path to the
.ovpnprofile on the VPS.
You also need an SSH client on the computer receiving the file. Linux and macOS normally include OpenSSH. Current Windows installations commonly include OpenSSH Client; in PowerShell, test it with ssh -V and scp -V. If those commands are unavailable, install or enable the OpenSSH Client feature before continuing.
Use an account that can read the profile. You do not need to run scp as root on your computer, and you should not expose the VPS’s root password merely to download one file.

First find the exact .ovpn path on the VPS
Log in to the VPS with SSH and check where the installer placed the profile. Many VPN installers write profiles into the user’s home directory, but the location is installer-dependent. A profile generated by a root-run script may instead be under /root or another administrator directory.
Check the current user’s home directory
ls -l ~/*.ovpn
If that produces a filename, note the path shown. The tilde (~) means the home directory of the account currently logged in. To see the directory explicitly, run:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchprintf '%sn' "$HOME
a=$(ls -1 ~/*.ovpn 2>/dev/null | head -n 1); printf '%sn' "$a"
The second command is only a quick check for the first matching profile. If you have several profiles, list them all and choose the one that belongs to the intended client.
Search likely directories when the location is unknown
Search your own home directory first:
find "$HOME" -maxdepth 3 -type f -name '*.ovpn' -print
If you have administrative access and the file is not there, a broader search can find profiles outside your home directory:
sudo find / -type f -name '*.ovpn' -print 2>/dev/null
A system-wide search can take time on a busy VPS. Prefer the narrowest directory you expect to contain the file. Once you have the path, inspect its owner and mode:
ls -l /full/path/client.ovpn
Record the exact capitalization. Linux paths are case-sensitive, so Client.ovpn and client.ovpn are different names.
Download with SCP (the simplest method)
SCP copies a file over your SSH connection. The command is run in a terminal on the local computer. The OpenBSD scp manual documents the source-and-destination syntax and options.

Basic command
scp user@VPS-IP:/full/path/client.ovpn ./
The first argument is the remote source. The final ./ means “save in the terminal’s current local directory.” For example:
scp [email protected]:/home/vpnadmin/myvpnuser.ovpn ./
A VPS setup guide uses the same general pattern, scp vpnadmin@<YOUR-VPS-IP>:~/myvpnuser.ovpn ./; see Liquid Web’s private VPN VPS guide for that example.
Save directly to a chosen local folder
Replace ./ with a destination path. On Linux or macOS:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →scp [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn ~/Desktop/
On PowerShell, a Windows Desktop destination can be written as:
scp [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn "$HOMEDesktop"
Quoting the destination protects paths that contain spaces. You can also give the destination filename explicitly:
scp [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn "$HOMEDesktopvpn-client.ovpn"
If a file with that name already exists, SCP may overwrite it after asking for confirmation. Choose a new name when you need to preserve the older profile.
Use a non-default SSH port
Put uppercase -P before the connection details:
scp -P 2222 [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn ./
-P selects the SSH port. It is not interchangeable with lowercase -p. In the OpenBSD manual, lowercase -p preserves the source file’s modification times and modes; it does not select a port. A command such as scp -p 2222 ... therefore does not mean “connect to port 2222.”

Use an SSH key
If your VPS requires a private key, add -i followed by the key file on the local computer:
scp -i ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519 [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn ./
On PowerShell, use the Windows path to the key:
scp -i "$HOME.sshid_ed25519" [email protected]:/home/user/client.ovpn "$HOMEDesktop"
Keep the private SSH key on the local computer. Do not copy it to the VPS just to retrieve the VPN profile.
Copy a path containing spaces
Quote the remote argument. The quotation marks must surround the complete user@host:path expression:
scp '[email protected]:/home/user/VPN profiles/client.ovpn' ./
Alternatively, rename the remote file to a path without spaces before downloading. Simple paths reduce shell-quoting mistakes.
Recommended Free Tools
Step-by-step SCP procedure
- Open a terminal on the computer that should receive the file. Do not start the command in an SSH shell on the VPS; that would attempt to copy the file somewhere else.
- Choose a local destination. Run
cd ~/Desktopon Linux or macOS, orSet-Location "$HOMEDesktop"in PowerShell, if you want the file to land on the desktop. You can also leave the terminal in its current directory and specify the destination in the command. - Enter the remote source. Combine the SSH username, VPS address, colon, and the exact path found earlier.
- Add options before the source when needed. Use
-P 2222for a non-default port and-i keyfilefor a specific SSH key. - Run the command and authenticate. Depending on the VPS configuration, SSH asks for the account password, the key’s passphrase, or neither.
- Wait for the transfer to finish. SCP displays progress and returns to the prompt when the copy is complete. A returned prompt without an error normally indicates that the local write succeeded.
- Confirm the local file. Run
ls -l client.ovpnon Linux or macOS, orGet-Item .client.ovpnin PowerShell.
Use an SFTP application instead
A graphical SFTP client is useful when you prefer drag-and-drop or need to browse several directories. SFTP transfers the file through SSH, so the VPS still needs an SSH service and an account with read access.
Generic SFTP workflow
- Install and open an SFTP-capable client such as WinSCP or FileZilla.
- Create a new connection and choose SFTP, not plain FTP.
- Enter the VPS hostname or IP, SSH port, and username. Supply a password or select the appropriate private-key file.
- Connect and accept the host-key prompt only if the fingerprint matches the one you expect for that VPS.
- In the remote pane, browse to the directory containing the
.ovpnfile. - In the local pane, open the folder where you want to keep the profile.
- Drag the file from the remote pane to the local pane, or use the client’s download action.
- Wait for the transfer status to report completion, then verify that the local filename and size are sensible.
Menu names and pane layouts vary by application and version. The essential settings are the protocol (SFTP), the SSH port, the correct account, and the remote path. Do not select anonymous FTP or an unencrypted transfer mode for a VPN profile.
OpenSSH 9 and the SCP protocol detail
Since OpenSSH 9.0, the scp command uses the SFTP protocol by default while retaining the familiar command-line syntax. The OpenBSD scp(1) documentation describes this behavior. In practice, you still run the same command shown above; the change mainly affects protocol behavior and compatibility with unusual legacy servers.

If an older appliance or server fails with a modern SCP client, check its SSH/SFTP compatibility before forcing legacy behavior. Do not disable host-key checking or downgrade security merely to make a transfer work. A direct SFTP client is often a clearer diagnostic because it reports authentication and directory errors separately.
Fix “permission denied” and unreadable-file errors
Permission failures usually mean that the SSH account can log in but cannot read the profile or traverse one of the directories in its path. Community reports describe this exact problem when copying OpenVPN files to a local machine; see the Linode Community discussion for an example.
Check access as the downloading account
On the VPS, test the file and every parent directory:
namei -l /full/path/client.ovpn
ls -l /full/path/client.ovpn
If the account cannot read the file, SCP cannot fix that by changing local options. Log in with an account that has read access, or have an administrator prepare a controlled copy.
Make a temporary, readable copy
An administrator can copy the profile into the regular user’s home directory, assign ownership to that user, and restrict the mode before downloading:
sudo cp /root/client.ovpn /home/vpnadmin/client-download.ovpn
sudo chown vpnadmin:vpnadmin /home/vpnadmin/client-download.ovpn
sudo chmod 600 /home/vpnadmin/client-download.ovpn
Replace vpnadmin and the paths with the actual account and file. Mode 600 allows only the owner to read and write the temporary copy. Download it from the local computer:
scp [email protected]:/home/vpnadmin/client-download.ovpn ./
After confirming the local copy, remove the temporary server copy so a second copy of the credential does not remain on the VPS:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
rm /home/vpnadmin/client-download.ovpn
Use sudo rm only if the file is owned by root and ordinary removal fails. Verify the filename carefully before deleting anything.
Do not make the profile world-readable
A tempting workaround is chmod 777 or moving the file to a public web directory. Do neither. Broad permissions expose certificates or private keys to other users and potentially to anyone who can reach the web server. Grant read access only to the account that needs the download, then remove any staging copy.
Verify that the transfer produced the right file
Check filename, size, and type
On Linux or macOS:
ls -l ~/Desktop/client.ovpn
file ~/Desktop/client.ovpn
In PowerShell:
Get-Item "$HOMEDesktopclient.ovpn"
Get-Content "$HOMEDesktopclient.ovpn" -TotalCount 5
An OpenVPN profile is text, so viewing only the first few lines can confirm that you downloaded a profile rather than an HTML error page. Do not paste the entire file into a public forum or support ticket; it may contain embedded key material.
Compare checksums for a large or important transfer
When you need a byte-for-byte check, calculate a SHA-256 checksum on both sides:
# On the VPS
sha256sum /full/path/client.ovpn
# On Linux or macOS after downloading
sha256sum ~/Desktop/client.ovpn
# In PowerShell
Get-FileHash "$HOMEDesktopclient.ovpn" -Algorithm SHA256
The hexadecimal values should match. A mismatch means the files differ; repeat the transfer and check that you used the intended source path and destination.

scp: command not found |
The local OpenSSH client is missing. | Install or enable OpenSSH Client, then reopen the terminal and run scp -V. |
| Connection timed out | The address or port is wrong, the VPS is stopped, or a firewall blocks SSH. | Confirm the VPS address and SSH port with the same settings that work for ssh. Check the server and network firewall rules. |
| Connection refused | No SSH service is listening on that port, or the port is not the configured one. | Test the port with ssh -p PORT user@host; use uppercase -P PORT in SCP once the correct port is known. |
| Permission denied (publickey) | The account rejected the selected key, or SCP did not use the key you intended. | Add -i /path/to/key, verify the username, and confirm that the public key is installed for that account. |
No such file or directory |
The remote path is wrong, the filename’s case differs, or the shell expanded a local path unexpectedly. | SSH to the VPS, run ls -l in the target directory, and copy the exact path. Quote paths containing spaces. |
| Permission denied while opening the local destination | Your local account cannot write to the selected folder. | Choose a folder you own, such as your home directory or Desktop. Do not run the whole transfer as administrator unless there is a specific local reason. |
| The transfer completes but the file is empty or unexpectedly small | You selected the wrong file, a script generated an incomplete profile, or the transfer was interrupted. | Check the remote and local sizes, inspect the first lines, and compare SHA-256 hashes before using the profile. |
| A GUI client shows an empty directory | You logged in as a different user or are browsing the wrong remote directory. | Confirm the account, switch to the absolute path found over SSH, and verify that the account has directory-traverse permission. |
| Host-key warning after a VPS rebuild | The server’s host key changed, which can be legitimate after reinstallation but can also indicate interception. | Stop and verify the new fingerprint through a trusted VPS console or provider channel before accepting it. Remove an obsolete key only after that verification. |
Handle the downloaded .ovpn file as a secret
VPN profiles commonly contain server addresses, certificate authorities, client certificates, and sometimes a private key or inline authentication data. Anyone who obtains a usable client key may be able to connect to the VPN until that credential is revoked. The exact contents depend on how the profile was generated, so inspect it locally rather than assuming it contains only harmless settings.
- Store the file in a private account directory. On Unix-like systems, use restrictive permissions such as
chmod 600 client.ovpn. - Do not place it in a public web directory, a shared network folder, or a source-code repository.
- Avoid downloading it to a shared or unattended computer. If you must use one temporarily, remove the profile and empty the recycle bin or trash afterward.
- Use encrypted storage and your operating system’s screen lock where practical.
- Do not email the profile unencrypted or paste its contents into chat, issue trackers, or screenshots.
- After moving the profile off the VPS, delete temporary server copies that are no longer needed.
- If you suspect that the file or its key was exposed, stop using that profile and revoke or regenerate the VPN credentials through the system that issued them.
Downloading several profiles
When a directory contains multiple client profiles, copy only the intended files rather than using a broad wildcard. A single-file command is easier to audit:
scp [email protected]:/home/user/phone.ovpn ~/Desktop/
scp [email protected]:/home/user/laptop.ovpn ~/Desktop/
If you deliberately need every profile in a directory, quote the remote wildcard so that expansion happens on the VPS rather than on the local shell:
scp '[email protected]:/home/user/*.ovpn' ~/Desktop/
Wildcard behavior can vary with shell and SCP implementation. List the directory first, and use explicit filenames when profiles have different access requirements. Afterward, check each downloaded file and protect the entire destination folder.

Quick reference
| Need | Command |
|---|---|
| Default SSH port | scp user@host:/remote/path/client.ovpn ./ |
| Custom SSH port | scp -P 2222 user@host:/remote/path/client.ovpn ./ |
| Specific SSH key | scp -i ~/.ssh/key user@host:/remote/path/client.ovpn ./ |
| Save to Desktop on Linux/macOS | scp user@host:/remote/path/client.ovpn ~/Desktop/ |
| Save to Desktop in PowerShell | scp user@host:/remote/path/client.ovpn "$HOMEDesktop" |
| Find profiles in your VPS home | find "$HOME" -maxdepth 3 -type f -name '*.ovpn' -print |
The reliable sequence is: locate the exact remote path, confirm that the SSH account can read it, run SCP or an SFTP download from the local computer, verify the resulting file, and protect or remove every copy you no longer need.
