A normal restart does not reset the in-game day. The day, time, weather and blood-moon counter are stored in the world save, primarily in main.ttp. Your count will return after the server starts only if it loads the same GameWorld, GameName and effective save directory. Save the world cleanly before stopping, restart the service gracefully, and verify the loaded save in the startup log.

What a restart actually preserves
7 Days to Die stores world-level state in the playable save rather than in the running server process. The file main.ttp contains the current day and time, weather state and blood-moon counter. A process restart therefore should continue at the same day, provided the server opens the existing world directory.

The playable save has this structure:
<saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/
GameWorld identifies the world or terrain, while GameName identifies that particular save. The effective <saves-root> is not always the default location. A UserDataFolder or SaveGameFolder setting can redirect it. A restart that points to another root, world or name can look successful while actually creating a new save at day 1.
The 7 Days To Die Wiki describes the relationship succinctly: “A single playable world lives at <saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/.” Treat that complete path—not just the server executable—as the identity of your world.

Why a server comes back at day 1
A changed GameName
If the configured save name changes, the server searches for a different directory. When that directory does not exist, it can generate a fresh world, whose counter naturally begins at day 1. This commonly happens after editing a startup command, importing a configuration, or recreating a service.
A different GameWorld
Keeping the save name while changing the world or terrain name also selects a different path. The server may load another existing world or create a new one, depending on what is present under the save root.

UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder can override the location you expect. A panel migration, a second installation, a container mount or a changed command-line option may make the server read an empty directory. The old save can still be intact elsewhere, but it is not being opened.

A missing or stale main.ttp
If the intended directory is incomplete, damaged or replaced with an older copy, the visible counter can be wrong even though the names look right. Do not let players continue while you investigate; additional writes can make recovery harder.
An interrupted write
Stopping or killing the process while it is writing can lose recent progress. The dedicated server has no built-in versioning, so an interrupted write is a reason to restore a known-good copy rather than repeatedly restarting the same damaged state.

- Warn players and stop new activity. Announce the restart, ask players to leave vehicles and containers in a stable state, and stop accepting new connections. A short pause prevents changes during the final save.
- Connect to an authenticated server console. Use the local console or an authenticated administrator connection. Do not send commands through an untrusted public interface.
- Force a world save. Enter
saveworldand wait until the server reports completion. Do not infer completion merely because the command was accepted; allow the save operation to finish before issuing the next command. - Request a graceful shutdown. Enter
shutdown. This lets the server close files and exit in an orderly way. Do not kill the process, close its terminal forcefully or reboot the machine during this step. - Let the supervisor restart it. Allow the service manager or hosting panel to start the process again. If your setup has no automatic restart, start the same service using the same configuration that was used before the stop.
- Check the startup log before reconnecting players. Confirm that the log identifies the established
GameWorldandGameName. Compare the names with your saved configuration and, when practical, verify that the effective save root is the one containing the established save. - Check the in-game day with one administrator. Join alone, confirm the day and time, and only then announce that the world is available. This catches a wrong-path launch before normal play creates more files in the wrong location.
Configuration checklist before you restart

How to verify the effective save path
Start with the launch configuration
Read the service definition, startup script or panel configuration that actually launches the server. Do not rely on a file you edited months ago; the active service may use another profile. Look specifically for GameWorld, GameName, UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder.
Resolve the path in the same environment
Relative paths can resolve differently when a service manager starts the process than when you run it from an interactive shell. Check the working directory and any container or mount mapping used by the service. The path you inspect must be the path visible to the running server, not merely a similarly named directory on the host.
Match the log to the files
After startup, use the log’s world and save names as the first identity check. Then inspect the corresponding directory and its main.ttp. If the log names the expected world but the day is wrong, compare the file’s age and backup history; if the log names an unexpected world or name, stop and correct the configuration before anyone plays.

Choosing a restart method
Manual restarts, a hosting-panel scheduler and a custom service job can all preserve the day count. The method is safe only when it performs a completed save, a graceful shutdown and a restart with the same configuration.

Do not assume that two panels expose identical commands or paths. Panel labels, server versions, mods and storage layouts vary. Treat the panel as an interface to the same requirements, not as proof that those requirements are met.

- Stop the server immediately. Prevent players from building, looting or triggering additional saves in the wrong world.
- Record the current launch configuration. Copy the active values for
GameWorld,GameName,UserDataFolderandSaveGameFolderbefore changing anything. - Locate every candidate save root. Check the default location and any directories named by the overrides. Look for the established world and save names, not just the newest folder.
- Compare
main.ttpfiles. The established save’s file should be in the matching<saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/directory. A newly generated day-1 directory is not a replacement for that file. - Correct the path and names. Restore the original
GameWorld,GameNameand effective save root in the active service profile. - Start once and verify the log. Confirm the intended names before allowing players back in.
- Restore a backup if the established files are missing or damaged. Use the last known-good copy rather than guessing which partial files can be mixed safely.
If the correct directory is present but the counter remains wrong, preserve the current files first and then compare them with the latest known-good backup. Do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting.

Backups that make a wrong restart recoverable
Keep an unmodified copy of both client and dedicated-server saves when migrating or changing the installation. Take regular snapshots because the dedicated server does not provide built-in versioning. A useful backup is a complete copy of the playable save directory, including main.ttp, rather than a screenshot of the day number or a hand-copied configuration file.
- Create a snapshot before changing the server version, storage location, startup profile or mods.
- Retain at least one copy that the running server cannot modify.
- Label copies with the date and the world/save names so you can distinguish an established save from a newly generated directory.
- After a successful migration, perform a controlled save and restart, then take another snapshot.
- Test that a backup contains the expected
GameWorld,GameNamepath andmain.ttpbefore deleting older copies.
Operational checklist for every scheduled restart
- Players received a warning and stopped making changes.
- The task connected to the correct authenticated console.
saveworldcompleted before shutdown was requested.shutdownwas used instead of killing the process.- The supervisor restarted the same service profile.
- The startup log shows the established
GameWorldandGameName. - The effective save root still contains the established playable directory.
- An administrator confirmed the day and time before public access resumed.

Key distinctions to remember
Restarting is not migrating
A restart stops and starts the same service. Moving a save to another machine, changing a data directory or importing a panel profile is a migration and requires an explicit path check and backup. Treating a migration like a routine restart is how a correct save gets left behind while an empty one is launched.

A clean shutdown protects recent progress, not just the day counter
The day number may appear correct even when the latest player actions were not written. Running saveworld and waiting for completion protects the broader world state before shutdown, so the procedure is important even when you are not worried about day 1.
Logs are the fastest identity test
A server can report “started” while loading the wrong directory. The startup log’s GameWorld and GameName provide a practical check before players generate new activity in an unintended save.
Bottom line
To keep your day count, save the world with saveworld, shut down with shutdown, and restart the same service using the same GameWorld, GameName and effective save root. If day 1 appears, stop immediately, find the established <saves-root>/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/main.ttp, correct the active configuration and restore a known-good backup when needed.
