There is no separate Xbox One controller driver download for Windows
For a genuine Xbox One or Xbox Wireless Controller, Windows 10 and Windows 11 normally install the required device driver through Windows Update. You do not need a driver CD, a third-party “driver updater,” or a random .exe from a download site.
Connect the controller first, run Windows Update, and use Device Manager if Windows does not recognize it. Install the official Xbox Accessories app only when you need controller firmware updates, button mapping, profiles, or other supported configuration features. The app is separate from the Windows device driver.

Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the normal way to obtain hardware drivers, while Device Manager provides update, reinstall, and rollback controls.
What “Xbox controller driver” can mean

Microsoft’s official support material does not provide a standalone Xbox One controller driver installer. If a site offers a generic “Xbox One controller driver download,” especially as an executable file, treat it cautiously. Microsoft advises avoiding driver websites other than the hardware manufacturer’s official site.

Before you update the driver
- Connect the controller. A wired connection is the simplest first test.
- Use a data-capable cable. Some USB cables provide power only and cannot carry controller data. The connector may be USB-C or micro-USB depending on the controller revision.
- Try a different USB port. Connect directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Close games and controller-mapping utilities before updating or reinstalling the device.
The current Xbox Wireless Controller product page lists wired PC connection and Bluetooth support on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Those specifications should not automatically be applied to every Xbox One-era revision: Bluetooth support, connector type, and some features depend on the exact controller model.
Install the Xbox controller driver through Windows Update
Windows 11
- Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible data cable.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any available updates, including relevant controller or USB-related driver updates.
- Restart the PC if Windows requests it.
Windows normally downloads recommended hardware drivers automatically. If a driver is listed under optional updates, it is not installed automatically: open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, expand Driver updates if available, select the relevant update, and choose Download and install.
Windows 10
- Connect the controller with a compatible data cable.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any relevant updates and restart the computer.
- If Windows offers View optional updates, open it and review the available driver updates.
On some Windows 10 installations, optional Microsoft-product updates may first require enabling Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows under Advanced options. Menu wording can vary by Windows 10 release and policy settings, so install only updates that clearly apply to the controller, USB connection, or related hardware.

Update or reinstall the controller in Device Manager
Use Device Manager when the controller appears in Windows but does not accept input, shows a warning icon, or Windows Update does not resolve the problem.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Look for the controller under categories such as Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, Sound, video and game controllers, or Other devices. The exact category depends on the connection and Windows build.
- Right-click the controller or the device with the warning icon and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows reports that it cannot find a driver, select the option to search Windows Update when it is offered.
- Restart the PC after the update.
If the driver installation appears corrupted:
- Open Device Manager and right-click the problem device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall. Do not remove unrelated USB, chipset, or Bluetooth devices unless you know exactly what they are.
- Restart Windows. Windows will detect the controller again and attempt to reinstall its driver.
If the problem began immediately after a driver or Windows update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Administrator permission may be required, and rollback is only available when Windows retained a previous driver.

Install Xbox Accessories for firmware and configuration
Do not install Xbox Accessories expecting it to replace the Windows hardware driver. Use it for controller-specific work:
- Updating supported controller firmware
- Button remapping
- Profiles and configuration
- Supported Xbox controller accessories and related settings
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Search for Xbox Accessories.
- Confirm that the publisher is Microsoft or Xbox.
- Install the app from the official Store listing.
- Connect the controller, preferably by a compatible data cable.
- Open Xbox Accessories and select the controller when it appears.
- Follow the app’s prompt if a firmware update is offered.
You can start from Microsoft’s official Xbox accessories Store page. Store listings, regional availability, and app labels can change, so avoid repackaged app packages or unofficial download mirrors.

Xbox has documented controller firmware updates through Xbox Accessories on an Xbox console or Windows PC. If a firmware update does not complete, keep the controller connected, try another compatible data cable, and retry from the app. Do not disconnect the controller while firmware is being written.
Pair an Xbox controller over Bluetooth
Bluetooth is convenient, but not every Xbox One-era controller supports it. Check the exact controller revision and make sure the PC has working Bluetooth hardware or a compatible adapter.
Windows 11
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose the controller when it appears.
Windows 10
- Turn on the controller and hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Select the controller from the list.
If the controller previously paired but no longer connects, remove its old entry from Bluetooth settings, restart Bluetooth or Windows, and pair it again. If it works over USB but not Bluetooth, the likely causes are model compatibility, an outdated or malfunctioning PC Bluetooth driver, a stale pairing, or interference—not necessarily the Xbox controller’s Windows driver.

Troubleshooting checklist
The controller is not visible at all
- Try another known-good data cable.
- Try another USB port.
- Restart Windows with the controller disconnected, then reconnect it.
- Check Device Manager for an unknown device or warning icon.
- Run Windows Update.
- If the controller still never appears, test the controller and cable on another compatible device to separate a PC problem from a hardware problem.
Device Manager shows a driver error
Use Update driver and search automatically. If that fails, use Uninstall device, restart Windows, and allow the operating system to attempt reinstallation. If the problem followed a recent driver update, check Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.

Xbox Accessories cannot update firmware
- Keep the controller connected directly to the PC.
- Use a cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Try another compatible cable or USB port.
- Close other controller utilities.
- Restart the app and Windows, then retry.
- If the Store app cannot be installed, confirm that Windows is updated and check whether Store, account, regional, or enterprise policies restrict the app.
Do not bypass the Store with unofficial app packages just to force a firmware update.
Games detect the controller but inputs are wrong
Windows recognition does not guarantee identical behavior in every game. Many compatible PC games use Microsoft’s XInput interface, but each game controls its own mappings, prompts, dead zones, headset support, and connection behavior. Microsoft describes XInput as the API applications use to receive controller input and, where supported, vibration and headset-related information; see the XInput documentation.
Check the game’s controller settings, disconnect duplicate controllers, close remapping software temporarily, and compare wired and Bluetooth connections. If only one game is affected, investigate that game’s input settings before repeatedly reinstalling the Windows driver.

The central product is the official Xbox Wireless Controller, which Microsoft lists as compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10/11. A compatible data cable is a useful secondary accessory because it can enable wired play and Xbox Accessories workflows.
A rechargeable battery kit is optional. The battery kit supplies power for controllers with the matching connector; it is not a Windows driver and does not install one. Do not buy a “driver CD” or generic driver package for this purpose.
