The exact controls vary by device and can change, so use Xbox’s current installation guide for the steps shown on your system. If you want to play without downloading, check whether that specific game and your device support cloud play.
Before you install: check your account and the game
Game Pass access is tied to the account and its current subscription entitlement. Make sure you are signed in with the account that has access, then confirm the game is currently available to you and offered for your device. Catalog availability and subscription terms can change; a game appearing in a listing does not establish that it is included for every account or platform. Install on an Xbox console or Windows PC
Use the Xbox experience for the device where you intend to play. Find the game’s current listing and select its install control. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose an installation location if that option is available. Xbox’s installation guide is the first-party reference for the current workflow; exact labels and sequence may differ by device and software version.
Choose an installation location
If the interface lets you select where the game is installed, check the selected drive or storage location and its available space before starting. Xbox documents ways to customize game installations. Storage needs and compatible locations depend on the device and game; check the game’s listing and your device requirements rather than relying on a general size or compatibility rule.

Check download progress
If you do not see progress, open the device’s download queue or installation-status view. Xbox provides guidance for viewing software installation status. The status there can help distinguish an active download from an install that has paused or failed.
Why a Game Pass game might not install
Work through the checks in this order. They address common points that affect access or installation without assuming a particular error code means the same thing on every device.

- Confirm the account and access. Check that you are signed in with the account whose current subscription provides access to the game.
- Confirm device availability. Check that the game is offered for the console or PC you are using; a listing for one device does not guarantee availability on another.
- Inspect the installation queue. Look for the game’s current status and any prompt or message in the device’s installation interface.
- Check the selected location. Confirm that the chosen drive has enough free space and is suitable for that game and device. Xbox’s installation customization guidance covers location choices.
- Use the support page for your device. For a Windows PC installation problem, follow Xbox Support’s PC game installation troubleshooting. For console steps, consult the current Xbox installation guide.
Install locally or play through the cloud?
Local installation downloads the game to a device, so it uses local storage and requires the download to complete before you play. Cloud play is a separate route that can avoid installing the console game locally. Xbox explains the distinction between cloud gaming and installing a console game.

Cloud availability is not a guarantee that every Game Pass title can be streamed on every device. Check the game’s current listing and the cloud-play information for your device before relying on it.
