SteamVR is downloaded through Steam, not as a separate conventional installer. Install the official Steam client, sign in, open Library > Tools, search for SteamVR, and select Install. You will also need a supported VR headset, controllers where required, and a VR-capable PC.
How to download SteamVR on Windows
SteamVR is installed through the official Steam client, not through a separate standalone SteamVR installer. Install Steam, sign in, then add SteamVR from your Library’s Tools category.

- Download and install Steam from Valve’s official Steam download page.
- Run the installer. You should have administrator access to the PC.
- Sign in to Steam, or create a Steam account.
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Search for SteamVR. If it does not appear in the normal game list, filter the Library by Tools.
- Open SteamVR and select Install.
- Connect and power on your compatible VR headset and controllers.
- Launch SteamVR from the Library, or select the VR button in the Steam client.
- Complete the on-screen seated, standing, or room-scale setup.
Before starting room setup, check the SteamVR status monitor. Valve’s Index setup guidance says connected devices should appear green before you continue.
What you need before installing SteamVR
SteamVR is a PC virtual-reality runtime, not a headset and not a replacement for headset-specific software. You need a compatible headset, controllers where required, a VR-capable computer, an internet connection, current graphics drivers, and the correct physical connections.

Valve lists support for the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and other supported headsets and controllers. That does not mean every VR headset works with SteamVR. If you do not already own hardware, compare the complete compatibility requirements before buying a SteamVR-compatible VR headset; the headset’s own runtime, connection method, tracking system, and the games you intend to play can all affect compatibility.
SteamVR system requirements
The SteamVR store listing currently displays these minimum specifications:

These are the requirements shown for SteamVR itself, not a guarantee that every headset or VR game will run well. Individual headsets and applications may require a faster graphics card, newer ports, additional software, or a particular cable. A computer that only meets the nominal minimum may deliver an unsuitable VR experience. If your PC falls short, compare a VR-ready gaming PC or a graphics card against the requirements of your headset and intended games—not SteamVR’s listing alone.
There is an important Windows-version distinction. The SteamVR listing retains older operating-system text, but Steam’s client-support notice says that, beginning January 1, 2024, the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later. In practical terms, a current Windows installation should use Windows 10 or Windows 11 rather than treating Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 as a supported modern Steam setup.
How to install SteamVR on Linux
Valve maintains separate SteamVR-for-Linux guidance. On Ubuntu, install Steam using the official Steam .deb package from Valve’s Downloads page.

Do not use the unsupported Steam Snap or Steam Flatpak packages for SteamVR. Valve says those packaging methods interfere with DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection, so SteamVR may not work properly in those packages.
Linux graphics and desktop support also matter:
- NVIDIA users need the proprietary NVIDIA driver; Valve’s Linux guidance specifies version 525 or newer.
- AMD and Intel users should use supported open-source Mesa drivers version 22.0 or newer.
- Your desktop environment or compositor must support DRM leasing.
- Valve lists X11, KDE Plasma Wayland, and several wlroots-based compositors as compatible examples.
- Valve’s cited guidance identifies GNOME Wayland as unsupported for SteamVR.
Linux compatibility can change with driver, compositor, kernel, and SteamVR updates. If you are troubleshooting Linux VR, check Valve’s current SteamVR-for-Linux page rather than assuming that a normal Steam installation method is suitable.

SteamVR cannot create a play area without the required headset hardware. Follow the connection instructions for your particular model. For example, Valve’s Index setup instructions require the headset’s DisplayPort cable, USB cable, and power adapter to be connected before launching SteamVR.
For room-scale VR, Valve recommends at least 2 by 1.5 metres—approximately 6.5 by 5 feet—of unobstructed space. Standing and seated configurations need less room. Clear furniture and other obstacles, and keep the play area away from stairs, windows, pets, and anything that could cause injury or damage.
Once SteamVR detects the headset and controllers, follow its room, standing, or seated setup instructions. SteamVR provides a status monitor, play-area boundaries, SteamVR Home, and an in-VR dashboard for launching games, browsing the Steam Store, and interacting with the desktop.

SteamVR is missing from the Steam Library
- Open the Steam client and go to Library.
- Search for
SteamVRusing the Library search box. - Clear restrictive filters if necessary.
- Check the Tools category; Valve identifies SteamVR as a tool rather than an ordinary game.
- If Steam is not installed or the client is damaged, rerun the official Steam installer from Valve’s Steam Downloads page.
Do not download a third-party file advertised as a “SteamVR installer.” The supported installation path is through the Steam client.

SteamVR installs but opens the desktop instead of VR
If the headset shows the desktop as if it were an ordinary monitor, open SteamVR and check Settings > Developer > Enable Direct Mode. Direct Mode is designed to keep the headset from being treated as a normal display.
Also update the graphics driver directly from your GPU manufacturer’s website. Valve identifies outdated or incompatible NVIDIA and AMD drivers as a possible cause of Direct Mode problems. Restart the PC after installing a driver update, then reconnect the headset and launch SteamVR again.
Other common installation and connection problems
The headset is not detected
- Confirm that the headset is powered on and that its power adapter is connected.
- Reseat the USB and DisplayPort or HDMI connections.
- Use the ports and cable type specified by the headset manufacturer.
- Update the graphics driver and any headset-specific software or runtime.
- Try another compatible USB or display port if the headset’s instructions allow it.
A generic replacement cable is not automatically compatible. Bandwidth, connector type, length, and headset-specific requirements control whether a DisplayPort cable for a VR headset, USB cable, or link cable is suitable.
SteamVR launches, but performance is poor
- Compare your GPU, CPU, and RAM with both SteamVR’s listing and the requirements for the individual game.
- Install current graphics drivers.
- Close unnecessary applications that consume CPU, GPU, or memory.
- Check that the headset is connected to a suitable graphics output rather than an unsuitable motherboard video port.
- Lower the game’s or headset runtime’s render resolution if your hardware is technically compatible but struggling.
Meeting the minimum SteamVR requirement only establishes a baseline. It does not predict performance for a demanding game, a high-resolution headset, wireless streaming, or advanced visual settings.

SteamVR works on one platform but not another
Do not assume that a headset or setup supported on Windows will work identically on Linux. Linux requires the correct packaging method, graphics driver, compositor, and DRM-leasing support. The installation guidance covered here is for Windows and Linux; the reviewed Valve material does not establish a macOS SteamVR installation path.

SteamVR adds the runtime and tools needed to launch compatible PC VR content. It does not automatically make every VR game compatible, and it does not remove the need for a headset’s own setup software where the manufacturer requires one.
When SteamVR is running, use its monitor to check headset and controller status. The in-VR dashboard lets you switch between games, access the Steam Store, and view or control the PC desktop. Set or confirm your play-area boundaries before playing room-scale titles.
