For Minecraft, CurseForge is primarily a manager for Minecraft: Java Edition. It creates separate profiles for modpacks and mods, checks compatibility, installs content, and launches the modified game. It does not replace Minecraft itself, and you still need the relevant game entitlement and account.

What is CurseForge?
CurseForge is both a website and a desktop app. The website hosts mods, modpacks, addons, custom content, and related projects for games including Minecraft, World of Warcraft, and The Sims 4. The desktop app helps you browse, install, update, organize, and launch supported content without manually moving files between folders.
A CurseForge profile is a managed game setup. In Minecraft, it can contain its own Minecraft version, modloader, mods, configuration files, and potentially saves. Keeping separate profiles is safer than putting unrelated mods and versions into one installation.

The workflow below focuses on Minecraft: Java Edition. CurseForge’s menus and supported features differ by game, and the app should not be treated as a Minecraft Bedrock Edition manager. On Linux, the officially documented app workflow is narrower than the full CurseForge website; current support documentation specifically covers Minecraft: Java Edition and World of Warcraft.
Where to download CurseForge safely
Use one of these official sources:
The app is desktop-only and has downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Avoid third-party “free download” sites and unofficial repackaged installers. CurseForge says its platform includes creator verification and security checks, but no third-party mod platform can guarantee that every user-created project is risk-free. Review a project’s author, files, description, dependencies, and comments before installing unfamiliar content.
Standalone CurseForge or Overwolf?

The official download page currently offers both Windows options. CurseForge is not universally dependent on Overwolf. The Overwolf listing describes its CurseForge app as free and ad-supported, with an optional subscription. If your priority is a focused CurseForge-only setup, choose standalone.

How to install and set up CurseForge
- Open the official download page. Select Windows, macOS, or Linux. On Windows, choose Standalone or Overwolf.
- Run the installer. Follow the prompts and open CurseForge when installation finishes.
- Select a game. Let the app detect supported games, or use its game-detection/add-game settings if a title is missing.
- Choose the Minecraft modding folder. CurseForge uses a separate environment rather than automatically mixing your profiles with a standard Minecraft installation.
The standard Minecraft locations documented by CurseForge are:
Windows: C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft
macOS: /Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/
Linux: /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraftYou can select Advanced to choose another folder. Use a location where your account has read and write permission. For a permissions problem, CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance gives examples such as C:CurseForge on Windows or /Users/Shared/CurseForge/ on macOS. These are troubleshooting alternatives, not mandatory paths.
You do not necessarily need to sign in to a CurseForge account before using the basic app. Account requirements vary by feature and game. Some features, including certain subscription benefits and World of Warcraft profile synchronization, require a CurseForge account. Minecraft launching may also require Microsoft/Minecraft authentication.

How to install a Minecraft modpack
Install from inside the app
- Open CurseForge and select Minecraft.
- Open Discover or Browse, then choose Modpacks.
- Filter or sort by Minecraft version, modloader, category, or project details.
- Open the modpack’s project page and check its required Minecraft version and loader.
- Click Install and wait for the profile and files to finish downloading.
- Open My Modpacks, select the new profile, and click Play.
A modpack’s Minecraft version and modloader are decisive. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt are different loader ecosystems, and they are not interchangeable for every project. A pack that targets Minecraft 1.21.x may not work with another Minecraft version, even if the difference looks small. The newest available file is not automatically the correct one; choose the file compatible with your profile.
Install from the CurseForge website
- Open the modpack’s project page on CurseForge.
- Click Install.
- When the browser asks to open CurseForge, click Open.
- The app should launch and begin installing the profile.
This uses a CurseForge deep link between the website and desktop app. If nothing happens, see the troubleshooting section below.
Import an exported modpack
CurseForge can import custom modpacks exported from the app as a file or code. Use the app’s import option for an export created by a trusted source. Do not treat an arbitrary ZIP downloaded from an unknown site as equivalent to an official or exported CurseForge pack.
How to install an individual Minecraft mod
- Search for the mod in CurseForge or open its project page on the CurseForge website.
- Click Install.
- Choose Create a new profile or select an existing compatible profile.
- If creating a profile, confirm its name and optional avatar.
- Accept the automatically selected Minecraft version and modloader unless you understand why you need to change them. Use Advanced for a deliberate change.
- Open the profile and use Add More Content to install additional compatible mods.
For an existing profile, select the mod and click Install. If it is already present, CurseForge may offer to replace or override it. A profile may not be available in the selection list when its Minecraft version or modloader is incompatible.
Before installing, check the project page for required libraries, dependencies, configuration instructions, and special installation notes. A mod can be perfectly valid yet unusable in your profile because it targets a different loader or game version.

How to launch a CurseForge modpack
Select the profile in My Modpacks and click Play. CurseForge can use the normal Minecraft launcher, or you can change the Minecraft settings to use the Microsoft Store launcher or the Use CurseForge launcher option. The CurseForge launcher option requires Microsoft/Minecraft account authentication.

For troubleshooting, start with the normal Minecraft launcher. Once the profile launches successfully, you can test the CurseForge launcher option if you prefer it.
A CurseForge profile is not a multiplayer server. To play with friends, the server and every player must use compatible Minecraft versions, modloaders, and mods. Installing a pack locally does not make an otherwise incompatible server work.
Update, remove, and manage content
Open an installed profile or game’s content list to manage its mods and addons. Depending on the game and project, you may see an individual Update control and an Update all option.

Read a project’s changelog before updating a heavily customized profile. Back up worlds and saves before major modpack or Minecraft-version changes. If a new version causes crashes, return to the previous compatible version or restore the backup rather than repeatedly changing several components at once.
Content added manually or obtained outside the CurseForge repository may not be updateable through the app. CurseForge’s Sims 4 documentation explicitly notes this limitation for manually added non-CurseForge mods; do not assume every externally added file can receive automatic updates in every supported game.
Fix common CurseForge problems

Check Java for Minecraft
Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks, and an outdated or unsuitable Java installation can cause launch failures. If repair and compatibility checks do not help, follow the official CurseForge Minecraft troubleshooting guide and use Java download sources it recommends.

If the profile still fails, temporarily test a clean profile with no extra mods. That separates an app or launcher problem from a broken mod, dependency, configuration file, or modpack update. If you contact the creator or CurseForge support, include the profile name, Minecraft version, loader, symptoms, and relevant logs.
Is CurseForge free?
The basic CurseForge app and its core mod and modpack workflow are free. The free experience can include advertising. CurseForge Premium is optional; the Premium page displayed pricing of $2.99 per month or $30 per year billed annually ($2.50 per month equivalent) when checked in August 2026.
Advertised Premium benefits include ad-free access, instant downloads, desktop customization, and enhanced author support. Premium is not required to install a basic modpack. CurseForge’s Premium FAQ says mods remain functional after a subscription expires, with Premium features removed.
CurseForge alternatives
The clearest Minecraft alternative is the Modrinth App. Its official page describes it as a free, open-source, cross-platform desktop app with offline mode and currently labels it beta; some Linux systems may have stability issues.
Modrinth and CurseForge are separate ecosystems with different catalogs. Choose based on where the mod or modpack you need is hosted. A Modrinth client will not automatically provide every CurseForge project, and vice versa.
Other supported games
CurseForge also manages content for games such as World of Warcraft and The Sims 4, but the installation folders, account requirements, profile behavior, and update controls vary. Use the game-specific support documentation rather than applying Minecraft instructions to another title. The CurseForge support center lists its game-specific guides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Minecraft installed before installing CurseForge?
CurseForge’s Minecraft setup documentation says the app can create its modding environment without requiring Minecraft to be installed first. You still need the appropriate Minecraft entitlement and account to launch and play the game.
Does CurseForge work with Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
The app workflow covered here is for Minecraft: Java Edition. Do not assume Java mods and modpacks will work with Bedrock Edition.
Do I need Overwolf to use CurseForge?
No. The official Windows download page currently offers a standalone CurseForge app. Choose Overwolf only if you want its platform and integrations.
Can I install a mod manually?
You can manually install content when the creator provides safe, compatible instructions, but manually added files may not receive CurseForge’s normal update management.
Can friends join my CurseForge world?
They can only join when the multiplayer server and every player use compatible Minecraft versions, loaders, and mods. A local CurseForge profile alone does not guarantee multiplayer compatibility.
Can I use CurseForge on Linux?
Yes, a Linux app is available, but official support is qualified by distribution and game. CurseForge specifically documents Ubuntu distributions and a narrower set of supported games; browser deep links may also require AppImageLauncher for AppImage users.
Will uninstalling CurseForge delete my Minecraft worlds?
Do not rely on an uninstall to preserve saves. Back up your worlds and the CurseForge Minecraft folder before removing the app or changing profiles.
