Xenia does not provide Xbox 360 games for download. To use it, download Xenia from an official source and prepare compatible game data from an Xbox 360 game you lawfully acquired, where making and transferring that copy is permitted by the law in your jurisdiction.
The practical route is usually to transfer a physical or previously purchased digital game from a stock Xbox 360 to a USB drive, copy the resulting Xbox 360 content structure to a Windows PC, and launch it in Xenia Canary. You cannot play the game directly from a PC disc drive, use an Xbox One or Xbox Series console to create a Xenia dump, or download an official Windows game-file package from Microsoft.
What you need before downloading anything
- Xenia Canary, downloaded from the official Xenia download page or the official Canary releases page.
- An Xbox 360 game that you lawfully acquired, either on disc or through an Xbox 360 digital entitlement.
- A working Xbox 360 for the usual transfer method.
- A USB storage device at least as large as the game, preferably with additional free space.
- A compatible Windows PC and, optionally, the community utility Velocity for importing or extracting certain Xbox 360 content packages.
- A check of the game’s entry in the Xenia compatibility repository before you spend time preparing the game.
There is no separate Xbox 360 BIOS or system-file download required by current Xenia Canary documentation. Do not search for BIOS packs, repacked emulator installers, or unofficial “Xenia APK” files. The project’s Quickstart warns that Android builds claiming to play Xbox 360 games are fake or unsafe.
Which Xenia version should you use?
For most new installations, use Xenia Canary. The project describes Canary as the more frequently updated fork, but it is still experimental—not a guaranteed stable release. A newer build can fix one game and introduce a regression in another. Xenia Master remains a useful alternative if a particular title works better there.

Release numbers change frequently. The release listing checked for this guide showed b98037b_canary_experimental, released August 7, 2026. Treat that build number as a snapshot, not a permanent recommendation; use the live releases page when downloading.
PC requirements
These are the current guidance points published by the Canary project. They are not a guarantee that every game will run, because compatibility varies by title, region, game version, graphics API, driver, and emulator build.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
| Level | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Recommended | Windows 11 x64 or later; a CPU with six or more cores; NVIDIA GTX 980 Ti or newer; at least 6 GB of RAM; and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2017–2026. |
| Minimum | Windows 10 x64 or later, or Linux through Proton; a 64-bit x86 processor with AVX or AVX2; a Direct3D 12- or Vulkan-compatible GPU; and at least 4 GB of RAM. |
| Not supported or potentially problematic | OpenGL and Direct3D 11 or lower are not supported. Integrated graphics may perform poorly, and the project warns that AMD GPUs can encounter driver-related crashes. |
Meeting the recommended specification means that your PC is a reasonable candidate; it does not mean that a particular Xbox 360 game is playable. Check the compatibility repository for the exact title and pay attention to whether the report refers to the same region and version of the game you have.
Where Xenia game files come from
Xenia is an emulator, not a game store. It does not supply ROMs, ISOs, Xbox 360 licenses, or Microsoft game downloads. Avoid websites offering “free Xenia games,” torrents, cracked packages, or one-click ROM bundles. Besides copyright and access-control issues, these files are a common way to distribute malware and incomplete dumps.
The legitimate preparation routes are:
- A physical disc transferred through a stock Xbox 360. This is the standard console-based workflow documented by Xenia.
- A previously purchased digital or XBLA game transferred from an Xbox 360. Microsoft no longer allows new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace, but previously purchased games and DLC remain playable and redownloadable on supported consoles.
- A specialist optical-drive dump. Some discs cannot be installed through the normal Xbox 360 dashboard. For those, consult the current Redump disc-dumping guide and its compatible-drive list.
A Microsoft purchase entitlement is not a direct “download this game to Windows for Xenia” feature. The normal supported path is to redownload the owned title to an Xbox 360 and transfer its console content to USB.
Legal and safety note
Use game data from a copy you lawfully acquired, and check the rules where you live. Do not assume that owning a disc automatically makes every decrypted, copied, downloaded, or redistributed version lawful. In the United States, the Copyright Office explains that DMCA §1201 generally prohibits circumventing technological access controls, while exemptions apply only to specifically defined classes and uses. The Copyright Office’s §1201 information and its 2024 recommendation are useful starting points, but they are not a substitute for legal advice.
This guide therefore does not list ROM sites, torrent sources, cracked downloads, or instructions for bypassing protections. It explains how to use the official emulator with game data obtained through a lawful, permitted workflow.
1. Install Xenia Canary
- Download the current archive from the official Canary releases page.
- Extract it to a permanent folder, for example:
C:EmulatorsXenia Canary - Run the executable included in the archive, normally:
xenia_canary.exe - Close Xenia after it opens once. This allows its initial configuration files and folders to be created.
Do not install BIOS files or Xbox 360 system files. Current Canary documentation says Xenia does not require them. Keep the emulator in a folder you control rather than repeatedly moving the executable between temporary extraction directories; doing so makes configuration, content, and save locations harder to find.
2. Check compatibility first
Search for the exact game in the Xenia game-compatibility repository before preparing a large dump. Compare the title, region, disc or digital version, and any listed title-update requirements.
Be careful with the labels. In Xenia’s terminology, a report marked Gameplay may only mean that the title reaches gameplay. It does not necessarily mean that the game is reliable or enjoyable from beginning to end. Look for evidence of a complete playthrough or a genuinely playable status, not merely a successful boot.
3. Prepare a USB drive on the Xbox 360
The USB device should be at least as large as the game and preferably larger. Formatting it on the console erases its contents, so back up anything important first.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the USB drive to the Xbox 360.
- Open
Settings > System > Storage. - Select the USB device.
- If the console reports that it is unformatted, choose the format option and confirm only after checking that there is nothing on the drive you need.
- Return to the Xbox 360 dashboard.
When you later connect the device to Windows, it may not look like a normal PC data drive. If Windows asks you to initialize or format it, cancel that prompt. The Xbox 360 content must remain intact.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
4. Transfer a physical disc game using a stock Xbox 360
A modded console is not required for the standard stock-console method described by Xenia. However, not every title exposes the normal dashboard installation option.
Disable automatic disc launching
- On the Xbox 360, open
Settings > System > Console Settings > Auto-Play. - Set Auto-Play to Disable.
- Open
Settings > System > Console Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Startup. - Choose Xbox Dashboard.
Install the disc to Xbox 360 storage
- Insert the Xbox 360 game disc.
- Highlight the game on the dashboard.
- Press X to open Game Details.
- Choose Install.
- Select the Xbox 360 storage device and wait for the installation to finish.
Transfer the installed game to USB
- Open
Settings > System > Storage > Hard Drive. - Press Y for Device Options.
- Choose Transfer Content.
- Select USB Storage Device as the destination.
- Select the game and start the transfer.
This is not the same as making a conventional ISO with a PC DVD drive. The Xbox 360 creates its own content structure, which you will copy or extract for Xenia on the PC.
If the disc has no Install option
Some titles are listed in the Xenia Quickstart as having no disc-install option. Do not assume that repeated disc insertion or a different PC DVD drive will solve this. Use the special console-based method described in the current Xenia Quickstart, or investigate the Redump method and compatible hardware. The exact requirements vary by title and dumping method.

5. Transfer an owned digital or XBLA game
Microsoft closed new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Microsoft said that previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC would remain playable and redownloadable. That continued console entitlement does not mean Microsoft provides the game as a Windows file for Xenia.
For a digital game you previously purchased:
- On the Xbox 360, redownload the game from your download history if the account still has the entitlement.
- Make sure the formatted USB drive is connected.
- Open
Settings > System > Storage > Hard Drive. - Press Y for Device Options.
- Choose Transfer Content, select USB Storage Device, and transfer the game.
- Continue with the PC import steps below.
If the digital content is already on the USB drive, skip the disc-install procedure. Digital and XBLA content use the Xbox 360 content structure, but some titles may start in trial mode until their valid license data is recognized and the appropriate Xenia configuration is set.
For more information about the store closure and continued access to earlier purchases, see Microsoft’s announcements about the Xbox 360 store changes and previously purchased content.
6. Find the transferred game files on Windows
- Connect the Xbox 360 USB device to the PC.
- Open the drive and enter the
Contentfolder. - If it appears empty, enable Show hidden files and folders in Windows File Explorer.
- Open the folders beginning with a
00000#-style name. - Look for folders and files whose names consist mostly of long strings of letters and numbers.
Typical content looks like one of these:
| Content type | What you may see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| XBLA or digital game | One file with no extension | Keep the package intact and open it through Xenia or extract it if necessary. |
| GOD, or Games on Demand, disc game | One main file plus a matching .data folder |
Keep the file and its matching .data folder together. |
| Cache data | ContentCache.pkg |
This is not the game itself; do not use it as the game file. |

└── 4D5307DF00000000.data
The identifiers in this example are only illustrative. They vary by title and content. Do not rename files to make up a title ID, and do not move only the .data directory. The official guide says to move or rename the folder above the game content, not the main file or the .data folder by itself.
Keep an untouched backup of the transferred content until the game has launched successfully. Copying only part of a package is one of the most common reasons for a failed boot.
7. Extract the game when the package will not launch
If Xenia cannot open the transferred package directly, the official Quickstart says you can optionally extract it with Velocity. The extracted directory should contain an Xbox 360 executable such as:
Rank #3
- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
default.xex
To launch an extracted game, open Xenia Canary and drag default.xex onto the emulator window. If the directory contains multiple .xex files and default.xex fails, the compatibility notes or the game’s other executable may indicate which one to try.
Do not rename an arbitrary file to .iso or .xex. Changing an extension does not convert the underlying data format.
8. Launch the game in Xenia
Using the graphical interface
- Open
xenia_canary.exe, or the similarly named executable in your build. - Drag the extracted game’s
default.xexonto the Xenia window. - For a supported GOD or digital package, open the package through Xenia rather than selecting a random file from inside its
.datadirectory. - Allow time for shaders and game data to load during the first launch.
- Test the game before deleting, renaming, or reorganizing the original dump.
Using the command line
The executable name can differ between builds. Substitute the actual executable name in your Xenia folder:
xenia_canary.exe "D:Xenia GamesGame Titledefault.xex"
Xenia’s documented generic syntax also shows an optional VSync argument:
xenia.exe path/to/game/default.xex --vsync=false
Do not add graphics or compatibility options at random. Use settings recommended for your exact title in the compatibility notes; an otherwise useful option can cause a different game to crash or render incorrectly.

Some XBLA and digital games start in trial or demo mode by default. This does not automatically mean the transferred files are corrupt.
- Close Xenia completely.
- Find the current Canary configuration file beside the emulator executable. Canary’s portable configuration is named
xenia-canary-config.toml. - Open it in a plain-text editor.
- Find or add:
license_mask = -1 - Save the file and restart Xenia.
Xenia’s options documentation identifies license_mask = 0 as deactivated or trial mode, and license_mask = -1 or license_mask = 1 as activated or full mode. The exact configuration name and location differ between Canary and Master, so check the documentation for the build you are actually running.
This setting is for properly transferred, owned digital content. It is not a way to turn an unauthorized download into a legitimate full game, and it cannot create missing license metadata or repair an incomplete dump. If the setting has no effect, verify the content type, preserve the original files, check the title’s compatibility notes, and confirm that the transfer completed correctly.
10. Install DLC and title updates
DLC and title updates are separate Xbox 360 content packages. They are not substitutes for the base game and should not be mixed into the base game’s folder arbitrarily.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Current Canary workflow
- Run the base game once so Xenia identifies its Title ID.
- Locate the corresponding DLC or update package in the transferred Xbox 360 content.
- Open Xenia.
- Choose Install Content.
- Select the appropriate content package.
- Restart the game.
The Canary Quickstart says the license for installed DLC is applied automatically. Compatibility can still depend on the correct game region, title version, and update, so consult the game’s compatibility entry if the content does not appear.

Master warning
Master uses an older, different workflow involving Velocity. Do not assume that Canary’s Install Content instructions apply unchanged to Master, or that a Master tutorial describes the current Canary file locations.
Where Xenia saves are stored
In current Canary, the content folder is beside the emulator executable because Canary is portable by default. Older Master configurations may instead use:
DocumentsXeniacontent
This distinction matters when backing up saves or moving from Master to Canary. Before changing builds, copy the relevant content and save data rather than assuming both versions use the same directory.
File-format decisions
| What you have | Best next step | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
An extracted folder containing default.xex |
Drag default.xex into Xenia. |
Keep the complete extracted folder intact. |
| An XBLA or digital package | Open it in Xenia or extract it if direct loading fails. | Valid content and license data are still required. |
| A GOD disc dump | Keep the main file and matching .data folder together. |
Moving only the .data folder breaks the structure. |
| An ISO | Do not convert every dump to ISO by default. | Current Canary documentation says ISO conversion wastes space; verify support for your exact build and game instead. |
| A DLC package | Use Canary’s Install Content option. | The content must match the game and Title ID. |
| An original Xbox game | Use an emulator designed for original Xbox software, such as Cxbx-Reloaded or xemu. | Xenia emulates Xbox 360, not original Xbox backward compatibility. |
Xenia Manager is an unofficial frontend that can help organize ISO files, extracted games, STFS packages, and other formats. It is not part of the Xenia project, is not required, and does not provide games. Install it only if you want its library-management features.

| Symptom | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Xenia opens, but the game will not boot | Check the exact compatibility entry and confirm that the complete package was copied. | Try the main package first, then extract it and launch default.xex. Test another Canary build or Master only if the title’s reports suggest it. |
| The USB drive looks empty in Windows | Enable Show hidden files and folders and open Content. |
Reconnect the drive. Cancel any Windows request to initialize or format it. |
| There is no Install option on the Xbox 360 | Check whether the title is one of the no-disc-install exceptions. | Use the current Xenia special workflow or a Redump-compatible optical-drive method. |
| The game only runs as a trial | Confirm that it is an owned digital or XBLA transfer and inspect license_mask. |
Use the correct Canary configuration file, then verify that the package and license data are complete. |
| DLC is missing | Confirm the DLC belongs to the game’s Title ID and region. | Use Canary’s Install Content, restart the game, and check compatibility notes. |
| The game crashes or has severe graphical errors | Check the title-specific compatibility report, emulator build, and graphics driver. | Try a documented renderer or setting and another build. Do not enable every hack indiscriminately. |
| The controller is not detected | Use an XInput controller, which Xenia supports by default. | Configure a non-XInput device through SDL if appropriate. Xenia does not support mice as game controllers, Kinect, uDraw GameTablet, or microphones. |
| Online play does not work | This is an emulator limitation, not necessarily a bad dump. | Xenia does not connect to official Xbox Live servers and does not support System Link according to its FAQ. |
Important limitations
Playing directly from a disc
No. Xenia’s FAQ says that games cannot be run directly from a disc drive, including a normal PC DVD drive. A physical disc must first be converted into usable Xbox 360 game data through an appropriate dumping or console-transfer method.
Using Xbox One or Xbox Series to dump a game
No. Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles cannot be used to create a Xenia-compatible dump. They may download and run supported backward-compatible games for their own ecosystem, but that is different from exporting the original Xbox 360 content for an emulator.
Playing online
Xenia does not connect to official Xbox Live servers and does not support System Link. Plan for offline play rather than expecting Xbox 360 matchmaking or console-network features to work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRunning original Xbox games
No. Xenia is an Xbox 360 emulator. It does not emulate original Xbox software or provide the original Xbox backward-compatibility layer. For original Xbox titles, investigate an emulator intended for that platform instead.
Android, macOS, and Linux
Current Canary documentation lists Windows support and Linux use through Proton. Do not treat unofficial Android or macOS builds as official Xenia releases. In particular, the project warns that Android builds claiming to play games are fake or unsafe.
When an Xbox One or Xbox Series console is the easier alternative
If the title is supported by Xbox backward compatibility, using an Xbox One or Xbox Series console may be simpler than preparing a Xenia dump. An owned digital game can appear in the console’s Ready to Install section. For a supported disc game, inserting the disc causes the compatible version to download, although the disc must remain in the drive for disc-based play. Xbox Series S supports digital games only.
That is an alternative way to play the game, not a method for creating files for Xenia. See Microsoft’s official backward-compatibility information for supported titles and console behavior.

Contentfolder. - Keep a GOD file with its matching
.datafolder. - Ignore
ContentCache.pkgwhen identifying the game. - Launch an extracted game through
default.xex. - Use Canary’s configuration and Install Content paths for trial-mode fixes and DLC.
- Keep the original dump untouched while troubleshooting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put an Xbox 360 disc in my PC and play it with Xenia?
No. Xenia does not run games directly from a PC optical drive. Transfer or dump the disc into usable Xbox 360 game data first, using a method appropriate for the title and permitted by local law.
Can I use an Xbox One or Xbox Series console to dump games for Xenia?
No. Those consoles cannot create Xenia-compatible Xbox 360 dumps. They can run supported backward-compatible games within Microsoft’s own ecosystem, which is a separate function.
Do I need an Xbox 360 BIOS for Xenia?
No. Current Xenia Canary documentation says Xbox 360 system files and BIOS downloads are not required.
Do I need a modded Xbox 360?
Not for the standard stock-console transfer method documented by Xenia. Some discs without the normal dashboard Install option require a different workflow or a specialist Redump-compatible method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does my digital game open in trial mode?
XBLA and digital games can start in trial mode. For properly transferred owned content, close Xenia and check the relevant Canary TOML configuration for license_mask. A value of 0 is trial mode; the documented activated values include 1 and -1. This setting cannot repair incomplete or unauthorized content.
Should I convert my Xenia game to ISO?
Not by default. Current Canary guidance emphasizes Xbox 360 content packages, GOD files, and extracted folders containing default.xex, and says converting to ISO wastes space. Verify the format required by your exact build and game.
Does every Xbox 360 game work in Xenia?
No. Xenia is experimental and compatibility varies by game, version, region, and build. A compatibility entry marked Gameplay does not necessarily mean the title is fully playable.
Where are Xenia saves stored?
Current Canary normally keeps the content folder beside the executable. Older Master configurations may use DocumentsXeniacontent. Check which build you are using before backing up or migrating saves.

Can Xenia play Xbox Live multiplayer?
No. Xenia does not connect to official Xbox Live servers and does not support System Link according to its FAQ.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You do not download Xbox 360 games from Xenia. Download the emulator from its official source, transfer a compatible game you lawfully acquired through an Xbox 360 and USB drive where permitted, preserve the Xbox 360 content structure, and launch the package or extracted default.xex. Compatibility, licensing, DLC, and legal copying rules vary, so verify each title instead of assuming that every ISO or download will work.
