Yes—you can queue a digital PS4 game remotely from an iPhone, Android phone, Windows PC, or Mac. Use the official PlayStation App or PlayStation Store website, sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console, and select the linked PS4 as the download destination.
For the download to start while you are away, the PS4 should be activated as that account’s primary PS4 and left in Rest Mode with an internet connection enabled. The phone or computer sends the request; the PS4 downloads the game directly from PlayStation Network.

Before you start: prepare the PS4
Remote downloads work only when the account, console, network, and storage settings are ready. Check these requirements once before trying to download remotely:

- Activate the console as that account’s primary PS4. On the console, go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4 > Activate. A PlayStation account can have only one primary PS4. See Sony’s primary PS4 activation guide.
- Enable internet access in Rest Mode: Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning On PS4 from Network in the same Rest Mode settings. This helps the console respond to remote requests while sleeping.
- Enable automatic downloads at Settings > System > Automatic Downloads > Application Update Files. Menu wording can vary slightly by system software version and region.
- Leave the PS4 in Rest Mode, not fully powered off. The orange indicator usually means Rest Mode, but the light alone does not confirm that internet access is enabled.
- Make sure there is enough free storage for the game and its updates.

Download a PS4 game from an iPhone or Android phone
The simplest phone method is the official PlayStation App. Sign in to it with the account used on your PS4 and link or pair the console when prompted.
Download a game you already own
- Open the PlayStation App.
- Tap Game Library at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose Purchased.
- Select the game you want to install.
- Tap Download to Console or Download. Sony may change the label or its position as the app is updated.
- Choose the linked PS4 if the app asks you to select a console.
The request is now queued for the PS4. The phone does not store the PS4 game and does not transfer the installation files to the console.
Buy and download a new game
- Open the PlayStation App and tap PS Store.
- Search for the digital game and confirm that the listing includes a PS4 version.
- Tap Add to Cart and complete the purchase.
- Open Game Library > Purchased.
- Select the new game and tap Download to Console.
- Select the PS4 if prompted.
If the download control does not appear immediately after purchase, reopen the library or sign out and back in. You can also start the download from the PlayStation Store website.

Download DLC or an add-on
- Open Game Library > Purchased.
- Select the relevant game.
- Open its Add-Ons section.
- Select the DLC and choose Download to Console.
The add-on must match the PS4 version and be associated with the same account. Some DLC is listed separately from the main game.
Download a PS4 game from a PC or Mac
There is no separate PC download utility for this feature. Use the PlayStation Store website in a browser.

- Open the PlayStation Store website.
- Select Sign In and use the account connected to the PS4.
- Open your account avatar and choose Game Library > Purchased.
- Select the game.
- Choose Download. A smaller browser layout may show a download icon instead.
- Select the linked PS4 if the site asks where to install it.
To buy a game, find its PlayStation Store listing, complete the purchase, and select the download option if it is offered. Otherwise, open Game Library > Purchased and start the download there.
The same website can be used in a phone browser, although the PlayStation App is generally easier on a mobile device. Button names and their locations can change, so look for the option that downloads the purchased content to your console rather than relying on one exact label.
What happens after you send the request?
The PS4 receives the command through PlayStation Network and downloads the game directly. Once the download completes, the console installs it automatically. The time required depends on the game’s size, your internet connection, PlayStation Network conditions, and available storage.
If the console is fully powered off, it generally cannot receive the request in real time. Sony indicates that the download can begin when the PS4 is next turned on. Rest Mode is the practical state for unattended remote downloads.
When you return, check the PS4’s download queue and notifications. The app can initiate downloads, but do not assume it provides the same full remote storage-management controls Sony advertises for PS5.

Remote download is not Remote Play
Remote download queues a digital game or add-on for installation on the PS4. It does not show the PS4’s screen and does not require Remote Play.

Why remote downloading may fail
There is no “Download to Console” button
Check these causes in order:
- Confirm that the app or website is signed in to the correct PlayStation account.
- Check that the game was actually purchased on that account. Review transaction history if necessary.
- Confirm that the PS4 is linked to the PlayStation App.
- Verify that the PS4 is activated as the account’s primary console.
- Check that the listing includes a PS4 edition. Some listings are PS5-only or contain separate PS4 and PS5 editions.
- Make sure the purchase completed successfully rather than remaining pending, failing, or being canceled.
- Check whether the game is hidden from the library.
- Consider account and console regions. A title, DLC, or license may not be available in every region.
Sony’s downloaded-game troubleshooting guide also recommends checking transaction history, hidden games, primary-console status, and licenses.
The PS4 does not appear as a destination
Use the same PlayStation account on both devices, link the PS4 in the PlayStation App, and verify primary-PS4 activation. Then check that the console is online and in Rest Mode. If the old PS4 is still activated as the primary console, you may need to deactivate it before activating another one.
If you no longer have access to the old console, Sony allows remote deactivation of all devices through Account Management, subject to its deactivation limits. This can affect game sharing and other account-linked access, so use it deliberately.

The download does not start
- Confirm that the PS4 is in Rest Mode rather than fully shut down.
- Recheck Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS4 from Network.
- Test the PS4’s internet connection.
- Check that the download is not paused.
- Verify available storage.
- Check PlayStation Network status.
- Install any available PS4 system software update.
If the PS4 was off when you sent the command, turn it on and check the download queue.
The download starts but stops or fails
- Go to Settings > Storage and confirm that sufficient space is available.
- Pause and resume the download.
- Cancel it and start it again from Library > Purchased.
- Restart the PS4 and router.
- Use wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- Check PlayStation Network status and update the console.
If the content database appears damaged, Sony’s troubleshooting steps may eventually lead to Safe Mode and Rebuild Database. Treat that as a later recovery step, not the first fix. Do not disconnect an extended-storage drive improperly or remove power while the PS4 is writing data.
The game is missing from the library
The most common reasons are a different purchasing account, a failed transaction, a hidden title, a region mismatch, or an unsynchronized license. Try this sequence:
- Check transaction history.
- Sign out of the account and sign back in.
- Confirm that you are viewing the correct purchase library.
- On the PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Check hidden games.
- Restart the PS4 and retry the download.
A PlayStation Plus catalog title can also disappear when the subscription or the title’s catalog availability changes.
There is not enough storage
Delete an old game and redownload it later from the library, remove unnecessary add-ons or media, or move PS4 applications to compatible USB extended storage. Go to the PS4’s storage settings to manage installed content and the default installation location.

For extended storage, Sony requires a directly connected USB 3.0 or SuperSpeed USB drive with at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB of capacity. USB hubs are not supported for this purpose, and only one extended-storage device can be active at a time. Games and add-ons can be installed there; saved data, themes, and screenshots or video clips are not treated as applications for extended-storage installation. - It cannot install a game that requires a physical disc. You must have the disc and insert it into the PS4.
- It cannot copy a PC game or arbitrary files from a computer or phone to the PS4.
- It cannot bypass ownership, licensing, parental-control, or regional restrictions.
- It cannot guarantee immediate downloading when the console is offline, fully powered off, out of storage, or affected by a PlayStation Network outage.
- It does not promise simultaneous remote installation across multiple PS4 consoles. One account can have only one primary PS4.
Purchased games, PlayStation Plus, and PS5 editions
A digital game purchased from the PlayStation Store is normally available for redownload from that account’s library, subject to licensing and account status. PlayStation Plus is not generally required to remotely download a purchased single-player game.
Subscription games are different. Access to a PlayStation Plus monthly game or catalog title depends on the applicable subscription and the title’s current availability. PlayStation Plus may also provide online multiplayer, cloud storage, discounts, and other benefits, but it is not a universal requirement for remote installation. Check the official PlayStation Plus page for current plans and regional terms.
Finally, check the edition before buying or downloading. A listing may offer a PS4 version, a PS5 version, or a cross-generation entitlement. A PS5-only game cannot be installed on a PS4.
