Short answer: yes, DOOM: The Dark Ages had genuine launch-era compatibility problems involving NVIDIA driver 576.40, but the game’s long known-issues list was not evidence that every crash was caused by NVIDIA. Frame generation, V-Sync and G-Sync settings, ShadowPlay, OBS, overlays, Ryzen integrated graphics, monitor changes, and even certain Intel CPUs were also involved.
The incidents described below date from the game’s May 2025 launch period. They should not be mistaken for a current August or September 2026 driver alert. Later game updates changed the supported driver baseline and fixed some of the documented problems.

- Game-and-driver interactions: Frame Generation, fullscreen transitions, window resizing, and Alt-Tab.
- Third-party software: OBS, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and recording overlays.
- Platform conflicts: Ryzen integrated graphics and a separate warning concerning some Intel 13th- and 14th-generation CPUs.
The launch-era issue list is reproduced in PC Guide’s report. Player reports also show that 576.40 worked normally for some systems, so it was not universally unusable.
Which configurations were most vulnerable?
The most frequently cited cases involved RTX 50-series cards, particularly when advanced frame-generation features, capture software, or fullscreen display transitions were involved. Some issues also applied to NVIDIA GPUs more broadly or to RTX 40- and 50-series systems.
- RTX 50-series GPUs using FSR Frame Generation and frequently switching with Alt-Tab.
- RTX 50-series GPUs using Multi Frame Generation with Control Panel V-Sync or G-Sync.
- RTX 50-series GPUs using ShadowPlay while Multi Frame Generation was set to 3x or 4x.
- NVIDIA graphics paired with a Ryzen processor whose integrated Radeon GPU was enabled.
- Players running OBS, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, or similar overlays.
- Multi-monitor systems where a second display was unplugged during play.
- Systems with Intel 13th- or 14th-generation CPUs experiencing the separately documented persistent-crash warning.
None of these combinations proves that every owner of the relevant hardware would encounter a problem. The reports were configuration-dependent.

| Symptom | Likely configuration | Launch-era workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze after Alt-Tabbing | RTX 50-series, fullscreen mode, FSR Frame Generation enabled | Use borderless-windowed mode, avoid frequent Alt-Tabbing, or disable FSR Frame Generation. |
| Crash while launching | NVIDIA GPU paired with a Ryzen system exposing integrated Radeon graphics | Temporarily disable the integrated GPU or install AMD driver 25.4.1. |
| Crash with synchronization settings | RTX 50-series, Control Panel V-Sync or G-Sync combined with Multi Frame Generation | Disable one of the conflicting options, or configure synchronization in the game instead of forcing it through NVIDIA Control Panel. |
| Display-driver timeout or system hang | RTX 50-series, ShadowPlay recording, Multi Frame Generation at 3x or 4x | Use a lower frame-generation mode or another recording application. |
| Freeze during OBS capture | Fullscreen capture and display-mode changes or Alt-Tabbing | Use windowed or borderless capture and avoid switching modes while OBS is active. |
| Instability with monitoring overlays | MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner running in the background | Close the applications completely, including their background components. |
| Game opens in the background | Alt-Tabbing during startup | Do not Alt-Tab while the game is launching. If it becomes inaccessible, the published workaround was to restart the PC. |
| Freeze after disconnecting a monitor | Multi-monitor setup with a display unplugged during play | Keep the display configuration unchanged until exiting the game. |
Ryzen integrated-graphics workaround
For the NVIDIA-plus-Ryzen launch-crash case, the developer guidance was to disable the integrated AMD adapter or install AMD driver 25.4.1.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Identify the integrated AMD Radeon adapter, not the discrete NVIDIA GPU.
- Right-click the AMD integrated adapter and choose Disable device.
This should be treated as a temporary diagnostic step, not a universal recommendation. Disabling the iGPU can affect motherboard display outputs, hardware video encoding, laptop graphics switching, power management, or fallback display output. Laptop owners should be especially cautious. AMD’s current driver package should be obtained from the official AMD support page; do not assume that 25.4.1 remains the correct package in 2026.

Frame Generation, V-Sync, and G-Sync
The documented failure was not simply “V-Sync causes crashes.” The problematic combination involved driver-level V-Sync or G-Sync settings and Multi Frame Generation on certain RTX 50-series systems. If that describes your setup, first remove the forced Control Panel setting and test the game’s own graphics options.
Disabling Frame Generation is a more useful diagnostic test than lowering unrelated texture or lighting settings because several launch issues specifically involved FSR Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.
ShadowPlay, OBS, Afterburner, and RivaTuner
ShadowPlay-related hangs were associated with RTX 50-series cards and Multi Frame Generation at 3x or 4x. If recording is necessary, test without those modes or use another recorder.
OBS was not generally incompatible with the game. The documented issue involved particular fullscreen, borderless, capture, and Alt-Tab transitions. Borderless or windowed capture was the safer launch-era configuration. The official OBS download page remains the correct source for the application.
For MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner, hiding the on-screen display may not be enough. The known-issues guidance was to avoid running the applications in the background while testing. Re-enable them one at a time after the game is stable. Their official pages are MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server.

A safer troubleshooting sequence
Do not begin by blindly rolling back drivers. Isolate the trigger in a controlled order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Update the game, Windows, and the GPU driver, while recording the installed driver version.
- Close OBS, ShadowPlay recording, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and other overlays.
- Disable DLSS, FSR Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation.
- Switch from fullscreen to borderless-windowed mode.
- Avoid Alt-Tabbing during startup, cutscenes, and display-mode changes.
- Do not unplug or reconnect monitors while the game is running.
- If you use a Ryzen system with integrated graphics, test with the iGPU disabled.
- Reproduce the issue and note whether it is a launch crash, gameplay freeze, display-driver timeout, or capture-related failure.
- Re-enable one feature or application at a time to identify the trigger.
- Report reproducible failures to Bethesda with your GPU, CPU, driver version, display mode, frame-generation mode, overlay software, and crash information.
Borderless mode can reduce fullscreen-transition problems, but it is not universally superior. Latency, HDR, scaling, and variable-refresh behavior can differ by Windows configuration and monitor.
Should you roll back the NVIDIA driver?
A rollback was a reasonable May 2025 troubleshooting step if problems began immediately after installing 576.40 and matched the documented symptoms. Community discussions mention successful rollbacks to 576.28 or 572.83, but those are user reports rather than proof of a universal fix. Other players reported that 576.40 worked normally.
Consider a rollback only after disabling frame generation, overlays, recording, and conflicting synchronization settings. If you do test an older version:
- Use NVIDIA’s official driver archive rather than an unofficial download mirror.
- Perform a clean installation.
- Record the original driver and the symptoms before changing anything.
- Return to the current driver recommended by the game when the test is complete, unless the current release is itself documented as problematic.
A rollback can remove a crash while also sacrificing fixes, newer hardware support, security updates, or compatibility with other games. The official NVIDIA driver page should be your starting point.

What changed after launch?
Historical context: The 576.40 issue list belongs to May 2025. Check the current official Steam announcements and game page before changing drivers.
The June 2025 PC update required NVIDIA driver 576.75 or newer for its path-tracing and Ray Reconstruction features. It also listed a fix for an Alt-Tab freeze affecting certain NVIDIA GPUs when FSR Frame Generation was enabled during cutscenes. The relevant update history is available in the official Steam announcements.
The official Steam page later surfaced a requirement of NVIDIA 610.74 WHQL or newer for DOOM: The Dark Ages and its Revelations content, along with newer DLSS 4.5 support and 5x and 6x Frame Generation on compatible hardware. Driver requirements can change, so treat that number as a current-page requirement to verify rather than as a permanent recommendation.
These later changes mean that keeping an old 572.xx or 576.xx driver indefinitely is not a sensible default for a modern installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProblems that were not simply NVIDIA driver failures
Ryzen integrated graphics
The Ryzen launch-crash entry concerned a conflict involving the integrated GPU. It did not mean that every Ryzen processor was defective or that disabling integrated graphics was appropriate for every user.

Intel 13th- and 14th-generation CPUs
The known-issues list separately mentioned rare persistent crashes on supported systems with Intel CPU model numbers beginning with 13 or 14 and directed affected users to Intel customer support because of possible CPU corruption. A game crash alone is not enough to diagnose damaged hardware. Treat this as a support warning, not a diagnosis.
Third-party hooks and monitor changes
OBS, overlays, monitoring tools, and monitor hot-plugging can change how a game interacts with the display driver without proving that the driver itself is defective. Removing those variables temporarily is more informative than immediately replacing hardware.
The verdict
NVIDIA driver 576.40 was involved in real DOOM: The Dark Ages launch problems, especially around RTX 50-series cards, Frame Generation, synchronization settings, ShadowPlay, fullscreen transitions, and Alt-Tab. But the wider known-issues list combined driver bugs with game-and-driver interactions, capture software, overlays, AMD integrated graphics, monitor changes, and a separate Intel CPU warning.
If you are troubleshooting the game now, match the workaround to the symptom: disable frame generation for a frame-generation freeze, use borderless mode for fullscreen transitions, close capture and overlay software, test the Ryzen iGPU configuration, and consult the current official driver requirement before considering a rollback. Do not treat the May 2025 576.40 incident as proof that every NVIDIA driver—or every current installation of DOOM: The Dark Ages—is affected.
