How to Download Grand Theft Auto V on Windows 11: Enhanced and Legacy Editions

To download Grand Theft Auto V on Windows 11, use the official Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher and sign in with the Rockstar Games account that owns the game. Windows 11 is the recommended operating system for GTA V Enhanced, but it is not strictly required: Rockstar lists Windows 10 build 1909 or later as Enhanced’s minimum OS.

Choose Enhanced if your PC meets its substantially higher hardware requirements and you want the current higher-spec PC edition. Choose Legacy if your computer is older or does not have a supported SSD and graphics card. There is no separate “Windows 11 download”; the edition you install is determined by the PC version available in your game library and the hardware your system can support.

Before you download: choose the correct PC edition

Rockstar’s current PC support pages identify two builds: PC Enhanced and PC Legacy. Check your hardware before starting the download, because the storage, graphics, processor, and memory requirements differ considerably. Rockstar’s complete specifications are listed on its official GTA V PC system requirements page.

Edition Minimum requirements Recommended requirements
GTA V Enhanced
GTA V Legacy

Important corrections: Windows 11 is not the Enhanced minimum OS, and Enhanced does not require 125 GB according to Rockstar’s current requirements. The 105 GB SSD requirement applies to Enhanced; the 125 GB HDD requirement applies to Legacy. You should still leave additional free space beyond the listed amount because the installer may need room to unpack files and install updates and prerequisites.

  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Which edition should you install?

  • Install Enhanced if your PC has at least the Enhanced minimum GPU and CPU and a suitable SSD. Its recommended specification is considerably more demanding than Legacy’s.
  • Install Legacy if your PC is built around older hardware, does not meet Enhanced’s graphics requirements, or you need the lower-spec PC build.
  • Do not use the Rockstar Games Launcher’s requirements as a substitute for the game requirements. The Launcher itself only lists Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible video card, and 1 GB of storage. Those are requirements for the Launcher, not for GTA V Enhanced or Legacy.

Rockstar also requires internet access for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. A Rockstar Games account, DirectX, Chromium, Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable, Rockstar software, and authentication software are listed as required components.

Method 1: download GTA V through the Rockstar Games Launcher

Use this method for a copy purchased through Rockstar or for a non-Steam installation that you want the Rockstar Launcher to manage. Download the Launcher only from Rockstar’s official location:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download the Rockstar Games Launcher from Rockstar Games

Install the Launcher

  1. Open the official download page and download the Windows installer.
  2. Run the installer. Select your language and click CONTINUE.
  3. At the Welcome screen, click CONTINUE.
  4. Check I accept the terms of the License Agreement, then click CONTINUE.
  5. Choose the Launcher installation location and click CONTINUE.
  6. Wait for the installation to finish and click CLOSE.

These are the current labels documented in Rockstar’s Launcher installation instructions.

Download the game

  1. Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Sign in to the Rockstar Games account that owns GTA V, or create an account if necessary.
  3. Open My Library.
  4. Select Grand Theft Auto V. If both PC builds are presented, choose Enhanced or Legacy according to your hardware and available entitlement.
  5. Choose Install Now, select a drive with enough free space, and start the download.
  6. Allow the Launcher to install its required components and apply current game updates.

On its first launch, the Rockstar Games Launcher can also look for Rockstar games that are already installed on the computer. To perform the scan manually, open Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now. A non-Steam installation found by the scan appears in My Library with the label Play on Disk. Rockstar’s instructions for this feature are available in its guide to adding Steam and non-Steam installations.

Method 2: download GTA V through Steam

  1. Open Steam and sign in to the Steam account that owns GTA V.
  2. Open Library and select Grand Theft Auto V.
  3. Click Install.
  4. Choose the Steam library drive and confirm the installation.
  5. Allow Steam to download and update the game. When prompted, allow Rockstar Games Launcher and the Rockstar account sign-in process to run.

Steam remains responsible for the Steam installation and its updates. If Rockstar Games Launcher scans the installation, it appears under My Library with the label Play on Steam. Steam must be running when Steam needs to update or launch the Steam copy; the Rockstar Launcher does not replace Steam’s installation management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you installed the game previously and the Rockstar Launcher recognizes it, use Settings > General > Scan PC for supported installs > Scan Now rather than downloading a second copy.

Method 3: download GTA V through Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and sign in to the Epic account that owns GTA V.
  2. Open Library and select Grand Theft Auto V.
  3. Click Install.
  4. Choose the installation folder and confirm the download.
  5. Allow Epic Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher to complete their account and authentication steps.

Epic manages the Epic installation and its verification process. The Rockstar Launcher supplies the Rockstar account and authentication layer; it does not take over Epic’s game-management functions.

How much free space do you need?

Rockstar lists 105 GB on an SSD for Enhanced and 125 GB on an HDD for Legacy. These figures describe the required game storage, not a guarantee that the installer will work with exactly that amount of free space. During installation, the launcher may need extra room for downloaded archives, extraction, DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, patches, and temporary files.

If you see “Installation failed, please try again later”, check free space first. Rockstar specifically identifies insufficient space—including space needed for extraction and prerequisite installation—as a common cause. Free space on the drive containing the temporary installation files may matter as well as space on the final game drive. The relevant troubleshooting guidance is in Rockstar’s GTA V installation-failed article.

Rockstar Games Launcher: verify the game files

  1. Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Under My installed games, select Grand Theft Auto V.
  4. Under Verify game file integrity, click Verify Integrity.
  5. Wait for the process to finish. A system-tray notification should confirm that the game is verified and ready to play.

Verification can replace missing or damaged files without requiring a complete reinstall. Rockstar documents this procedure in its Launcher file-verification guide.

Steam: verify the installation

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click Grand Theft Auto V.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Open Local Files.
  5. Click Verify integrity of game files….

Rockstar says verification may help with missing textures or items, crashes, and freezes. Its current verification article refers users to Steam Support for the current Steam procedure, while its GTA V error-134 guidance lists the path above.

Epic Games Launcher: verify the installation

Epic’s verification controls can change with Launcher updates. Rockstar’s current guide directs Epic users to Epic Support for the current verification procedure. As with Steam and the Rockstar Launcher, verification is the first repair step for missing files, missing textures or items, crashes, and freezes.

Fix common Windows 11 download and launch errors

Error 134: Rockstar Game Services are unavailable

The full message is usually “The Rockstar Game Services are unavailable and offline play could not be verified.” This can occur when the installed game is not up to date, including when a recent GTA V update has not been applied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make sure the launcher that owns the installation is open: Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Check for and install pending GTA V updates.
  3. Verify the game files using the appropriate procedure above.
  4. Restart the launcher and try again while connected to the internet.

Rockstar’s documented first repair action for error 134 is file verification. If the problem continues, consult the official error 134 troubleshooting page.

Crashes, freezes, or poor performance

For a general installation or crash problem, work through these checks:

  1. Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD and restart Windows.
  2. Install pending Windows updates.
  3. Verify GTA V’s files through the platform that manages the installation.
  4. Temporarily check whether antivirus or security software is blocking the Launcher, game executable, or required authentication components. Do not leave security protection disabled permanently; use an appropriate exception only if necessary.
  5. Open the game’s Redistributables folder and run the DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ installers included there. For a default Rockstar installation, the folder is C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto VRedistributables.
  6. Record the error message and inspect launcher.log in My DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV if Rockstar Support requests diagnostic information.

These checks reflect Rockstar’s general GTA V PC troubleshooting guidance.

The Rockstar Launcher shows “Play on Steam” instead of “Install Now”

  1. Close Steam completely.
  2. Find the existing Steam GTA V folder, normally C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V.
  3. Temporarily rename that folder so the Rockstar Launcher cannot identify it as the existing Steam installation.
  4. Restart Rockstar Games Launcher.
  5. Open My Library, select GTA V, and choose Install Now.
  6. After the Rockstar installation finishes, restore the original Steam folder name if you still need it. Avoid having two installations use the same files unless the relevant launcher recognizes them correctly.

Clean reinstall if verification does not work

A normal uninstall can leave damaged or conflicting files behind. Rockstar’s clean-install procedure includes checking these locations after uninstalling GTA V and the Rockstar Games Launcher:

  • C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto V
  • C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V
  • C:Program FilesEpic GamesGTA
  • C:Users<user.name>DocumentsRockstar GamesSocial Club
  • C:Users<user.name>DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV
  • C:Users<user.name>AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV

The AppData folder is hidden by default in Windows. Enable hidden items in File Explorer before looking for it. The Documents and AppData GTA V folders can contain saves, settings, and recorded videos. Back them up before removing anything: Rockstar warns that deleting those folders without a backup can make the files unrecoverable.

Deleting the Social Club temporary files will also require you to enter your Rockstar account credentials again. After removing only the residual files relevant to the problem, restart Windows and reinstall from the platform that owns your copy. Rockstar’s complete steps are in its clean-install guide for GTA V on PC.

Reinstall through Steam or Epic

Steam

  1. Open Steam Library.
  2. Right-click Grand Theft Auto V and choose Manage > Uninstall.
  3. After uninstalling, delete leftover files from C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V, if that folder remains and you have backed up your saves and settings.
  4. Return to the game’s Steam library page and click Install.

These are the reinstall steps Rockstar cites in its error 134 support article.

Keep the Windows 11 installation updated

Use the platform that installed your copy to receive updates: Steam manages Steam updates, Epic Games Launcher manages Epic updates, and the Rockstar Games Launcher manages Rockstar installations. The Rockstar Launcher may still show Steam and non-Steam installations in My Library, but that does not make it the sole update manager.

Rockstar’s support index currently labels the PC builds PC [Enhanced/Legacy]. Its latest indexed GTA V title-update page is Title Update 1.73, last updated August 5, 2026; the PC Enhanced/Legacy changes listed on that page were released July 30, July 23, and July 16, 2026. Check the official Title Update 1.73 notes if a launcher reports that your installation is out of date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windows 11 required to download GTA V Enhanced?

No. Rockstar lists Windows 10 build 1909 or later as Enhanced’s minimum operating system and Windows 11 as the recommended OS. Your PC must also meet the Enhanced CPU, GPU, RAM, and 105 GB SSD requirements.

Should I install GTA V Enhanced or Legacy on Windows 11?

Windows 11 by itself does not determine the choice. Enhanced requires a much newer processor and graphics card plus a 105 GB SSD, while Legacy supports substantially older hardware and lists 125 GB on an HDD. Choose Enhanced if your PC meets its requirements; otherwise use Legacy if it is available in your library.

Do I need the Rockstar Games Launcher if I bought GTA V on Steam or Epic?

Steam and Epic continue to manage their own installations and updates, but Rockstar software and account authentication are required. A Steam installation may appear in Rockstar Games Launcher as “Play on Steam,” while a non-Steam installation may appear as “Play on Disk.”

Can I download GTA V without an internet connection?

No for the initial setup: Rockstar requires internet access for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. An offline launch may also fail if the installation is not current or its entitlement cannot be verified.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the GTA V download says installation failed?

First check that the destination and temporary installation drives have more free space than the listed 105 GB Enhanced or 125 GB Legacy requirement. Then verify the files through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic, and reinstall the DirectX and Visual C++ packages from the game’s Redistributables folder if necessary.

The Bottom Line

For Windows 11, download GTA V from the official Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher—not an unofficial mirror. Install Enhanced only if your PC meets its 105 GB SSD and modern hardware requirements; use Legacy for older systems. Keep the owning launcher updated, verify files before reinstalling, and back up the folders under Documents and AppData before performing a clean install.
