How to Use Arrow Keys on a 60% Keyboard

A 60% keyboard usually hides arrow keys on an Fn layer, but the shortcut is not universal. Find your model’s mapping, use arrows in games, and remap them safely.
Length15 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Quick answer: Hold Fn and press the keys marked with arrow symbols on your 60% keyboard. The exact keys depend on the model: Fn + IJKL and Fn + WASD are common arrangements, but neither is universal. If your keyboard has a separate physical arrow cluster, it may be a 65% keyboard rather than a conventional 60% board.

A true 60% keyboard normally removes the dedicated arrow keys, function row, navigation cluster, and number pad to make the board smaller. The missing functions are usually still available through a firmware layer. The most reliable way to find them is to inspect the small legends on the front or side of the keycaps, then confirm the layout in the manual for the exact model and revision.

First, identify your keyboard’s arrow method

There is no universal arrow-key shortcut for every 60% keyboard. “60%” describes the physical form factor, not a standard firmware layout. Two boards that look similar can use completely different key combinations, toggle shortcuts, profiles, or tap-hold behavior.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Find the Fn key. It is usually on the bottom row, although some keyboards have Fn1 or Fn2.
  2. Inspect the keycaps. Look for small up, down, left, and right arrow legends printed on the front or side of keys.
  3. Hold Fn and press the key with the desired arrow legend. For a momentary layer, release both keys when finished.
  4. Check the exact manual if there are no arrow legends or the shortcut does not work. Search the manufacturer’s support page using the complete model name, layout, connection type, and revision.
  5. Test the result in a plain text editor or keyboard tester before trying to use the arrows in a game.

Do not start by assuming that Fn + IJKL is correct. It is only one convention. For example, the official Logitech PRO X 60 shortcut chart uses a different arrangement, while the Royal Kludge RK61 uses a shortcut that toggles an arrow mode.

Layout or behavior Up Left Down Right How it behaves
IJKL Fn + I Fn + J Fn + K Fn + L A common gaming and compact-keyboard arrangement. The default Razer Huntsman Mini layout uses this pattern.
WASD Fn + W Fn + A Fn + S Fn + D Found on some gaming-oriented or customized boards. Many keyboards do not use it.
HJKL or Vim-style Fn + K Fn + H Fn + J Fn + L A possible custom or Vim-inspired layout, not a default to assume.
Bottom-right cluster Model-specific May use the right Shift, Alt, Ctrl, Fn, slash, or punctuation keys.
Toggle arrow mode Model-specific A shortcut changes several keys into arrows until the shortcut is pressed again.

On some keyboards, the arrow functions are momentary: you hold Fn while pressing an arrow key. On others, a shortcut turns arrow mode on or off. Those are different firmware designs, so holding Fn will not necessarily work on a keyboard that uses a toggle.

Verified examples from popular 60% keyboards

The following examples show why the model and revision matter. They are illustrations, not instructions that apply to every 60% keyboard with the same brand name.

Keyboard Arrow method Behavior
Logitech PRO X 60 Fn + K = Up; Fn + M = Left; Fn + < = Down; Fn + > = Right Hold Fn while pressing the arrow key. See Logitech’s official shortcut documentation.
Razer Huntsman Mini Fn + I/J/K/L A momentary secondary layer. Razer documents the keyboard’s side-printed secondary functions, and independent testing of the Huntsman Mini confirms the default IJKL arrow arrangement.
Royal Kludge RK61 Fn + Enter Toggles the arrow-key function on or off. The exact keys affected can vary by RK61 revision, so use the manual or product documentation for your board.
Ducky One 2 Mini and One 3 Mini Use the arrows shown in the model-specific Fn-layer diagram Ducky publishes separate manuals and firmware for different Mini models and revisions through its official downloads directory. A replacement keycap set may not show the original firmware layout correctly.
Razer Huntsman V3 Pro Mini Tap the bottom-right modifier keys for arrows; hold them for their normal modifier functions This is a tap-hold design, distinct from the older Huntsman Mini’s Fn + IJKL arrangement. See the Huntsman V3 Pro Mini product information.

Why the Fn key works differently from an ordinary key

On a compact mechanical keyboard, Fn is usually a firmware layer switch. It may not send a normal keycode to Windows, macOS, or Linux by itself. Instead, it changes what another key sends while the layer is active.

Common layer behaviors

  • Momentary layer: hold Fn while pressing another key. Releasing Fn returns to the base layer.
  • Toggle layer: press a shortcut once to activate a layer and press it again to deactivate it. The RK61’s arrow mode is an example.
  • One-shot layer: activate a layer for the next key only, then automatically return to the previous layer.
  • Tap-hold key: tap a key to send one function, or hold it to activate a layer. The Huntsman V3 Pro Mini’s bottom-right arrow behavior uses this general idea.

In QMK terminology, a normal momentary function key is commonly represented by MO(1): it activates layer 1 while held and returns to the previous layer when released. QMK’s layer documentation and the VIA layer guide explain these behaviors in more detail.

Using arrows with Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Windows, or Command

Once the keyboard sends a standard arrow keycode, the operating system or application generally treats it like an arrow from a full-size keyboard. With a momentary layer, hold the modifier and Fn, then press the mapped arrow key. For example, with an IJKL layout, text selection to the right would usually be Shift + Fn + L.

Combination Typical result Important qualification
Shift + Arrow Extends a text selection in the arrow’s direction. Most text editors support this, but applications can customize shortcuts.
Ctrl + Left/Right Moves by a word on Windows and in many Linux applications. Text fields, terminals, and editors may interpret it differently.
Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right Selects by word in Windows and many Linux applications. Behavior depends on the application and text control.
Cmd + Arrow Performs macOS navigation actions supported by the application, such as moving to a line or document boundary. macOS applications do not all use the same navigation behavior.
Win + Left/Right Snaps the active window to the left or right side of the Windows desktop. The shortcut belongs to Windows, not to the 60% keyboard.
Alt + Left/Right Usually navigates backward or forward in a browser. Many applications use this convention, but not every program does.

If the arrow alone works but a modifier combination does not, test the combination in a plain text editor first. A custom macro, tap-hold setting, active layer, or application-specific shortcut may be involved.

Using 60% keyboard arrows in games

When the keyboard firmware produces a normal Up, Down, Left, or Right keycode, a game should generally be able to receive or bind it like a dedicated arrow key. The practical procedure is:

  1. Open a text editor or keyboard tester and confirm that the shortcut produces the intended arrow.
  2. Open the game’s controls or keybindings menu.
  3. Choose the action you want to change and press the arrow combination.
  4. Save the binding and test it in the game.

If the arrow works in a text editor but the game ignores it, the keyboard is probably not the main problem. Check the game’s input mode and bindings first. Some games use specialized input APIs, elevated permissions, or anti-cheat systems that do not cooperate with ordinary operating-system remappers.

For that reason, a hardware-level remap in the keyboard’s firmware is generally preferable for games when available. It does not require a background remapping process and is more likely to work consistently across applications, although no remapping method is guaranteed to be accepted by every game or anti-cheat system.

Microsoft specifically warns that PowerToys Keyboard Manager may affect game performance and may not work with some games or keyboard APIs. Test any software remap before relying on it in a competitive game.

Make arrow keys easier to use

There are four practical choices: keep the factory layer, use a toggle mode, reprogram the keyboard, or remap it through the operating system.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Option 1: Keep the momentary Fn layer

This is the safest default because it preserves every letter and punctuation key. It works well when you use arrows occasionally for scrolling, text editing, or menu navigation.

  • Advantages: no mode to remember, no keys permanently sacrificed, and no software required.
  • Disadvantages: two-key combinations can be awkward for sustained navigation or repeated use with Shift, Ctrl, or Cmd.

Option 2: Use a toggle arrow mode

A toggle temporarily converts a group of keys into arrows. It is more comfortable for a long navigation session or a game that expects frequent arrow presses, but it can be confusing if you forget that the mode is active. Letters, punctuation, or modifier keys may appear to stop working normally until the toggle is pressed again.

On the RK61, for example, Fn + Enter switches the arrow function on or off. If pressing that shortcut changes punctuation or letters, press it again to restore the normal layer. Consult the RK61 key-combination reference for the relevant revision.

Option 3: Remap the keyboard with VIA

VIA is a good choice when the keyboard has VIA-compatible firmware and a matching keyboard definition. It lets you place standard arrow keycodes on a layer without repeatedly guessing factory shortcuts.

  1. Connect the keyboard by USB if possible.
  2. Open the VIA configurator and confirm that the keyboard is recognized.
  3. Select the base layer, usually layer 0.
  4. Choose the physical key position you want to use for Fn.
  5. Assign MO(1), or the equivalent momentary-layer function shown by your version of VIA.
  6. Select layer 1 and assign four keys to KC_UP, KC_LEFT, KC_DOWN, and KC_RIGHT.
  7. Use VIA’s Key Tester to verify the output.
  8. Save or export the layout before making more changes.

VIA does not automatically support every mechanical keyboard. It needs a compatible firmware implementation and a keyboard definition that describes the board’s physical layout and configurable keys. If the manufacturer supplies a JSON definition, load that exact definition through VIA’s Design tab when appropriate. Do not load a definition for a merely similar keyboard: the wrong layout can assign functions to the wrong physical positions. The VIA specification and VIA/QMK configuration documentation explain the definition requirement.

Option 4: Build a custom QMK layer

QMK offers more control than a fixed factory shortcut, but the board must actually use compatible QMK firmware and expose the necessary key positions. Typical QMK layer and keycode entries include:

MO(1) momentarily activate layer 1
LT(1, KC_ESC) hold for layer 1; tap for Escape
TG(1) toggle layer 1
TT(1) hold for layer 1; tap repeatedly to toggle
OSL(1) activate layer 1 for the next key
KC_UP Up Arrow
KC_LEFT Left Arrow
KC_DOWN Down Arrow
KC_RIGHT Right Arrow

QMK defines KC_UP, KC_LEFT, KC_DOWN, and KC_RIGHT as standard arrow keycodes. Its layer documentation also covers layer order, transparent keys, and how a higher active layer can override a lower one. A transparent position is commonly represented by KC_TRNS, allowing the underlying layer to remain available.

Before changing firmware, save the current keymap and follow the exact instructions for the board. Wrong firmware or a wrong keyboard definition can create recovery problems. Never flash firmware intended for a board that is only superficially similar.

Useful custom layouts

The most comfortable arrangement depends on what you do with the keyboard:

  • Fn + IJKL: familiar to many compact-keyboard and gaming users.
  • Fn + HJKL: convenient for Vim-style navigation and coding.
  • Hold Caps Lock + HJKL: keeps navigation near the home row, although it changes how Caps Lock behaves.
  • Hold Space + IJKL: convenient for the right thumb but potentially disruptive if you frequently hold Space while typing or gaming.
  • Right-thumb layer key + IJKL: useful for frequent navigation without stretching the left hand.
  • Tap-hold modifiers: preserve the normal modifier when tapped and activate the navigation layer when held.

Option 5: Use the manufacturer’s software

Gaming keyboards may use proprietary configuration software rather than VIA or QMK. The Razer Huntsman Mini can use Synapse profiles and secondary-key remapping, while HyperX identifies NGENUITY as the configuration software for the Alloy Origins 60. Use the software’s exact model profile, not a generic profile from a similar keyboard.

Vendor software is often the least risky way to customize a proprietary board. Check whether the setting is saved only in the software profile or stored in onboard memory. A profile that depends on software may not follow the keyboard to another computer.

Option 6: Remap keys in the operating system

Windows

Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager provides the path PowerToys → Keyboard Manager → Remap a key. It is useful when the keyboard cannot be reprogrammed, but PowerToys must remain running in the background. The remap does not work at the Windows login screen, and it may fail with elevated applications or games that use incompatible input APIs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS

Karabiner-Elements supports key-to-key remapping, complex modifications, device-specific profiles, and event inspection. It is useful when you want a different arrow layout on a Mac without changing the keyboard firmware.

Linux

Firmware-level remapping is the most portable choice because the keyboard sends the resulting arrow keycodes before the operating system or desktop environment processes them. If the board is not programmable, use a remapping tool appropriate for your Linux distribution and desktop environment; its behavior can vary more than a keyboard-level layer.

When a 65% keyboard is the better solution

If you use arrow keys constantly and dislike holding a layer or remembering a toggle, a 65% keyboard may be a better fit. A conventional 65% layout generally restores a dedicated arrow cluster and some navigation keys while remaining much smaller than a tenkeyless or full-size keyboard. HyperX’s 65% keyboard explanation illustrates this distinction.

Dedicated arrows are not a firmware shortcut; they are a physical layout difference. If your board already has four separate arrow keys, you are probably dealing with a 65% or another compact layout rather than a standard 60% keyboard.

Troubleshooting 60% keyboard arrow keys

Problem Most likely cause What to do
Fn + IJKL does nothing The keyboard uses another mapping, a bottom-right cluster, a toggle, or a different profile. Stop trying generic shortcuts. Identify the exact model and revision, inspect the legends, and read the official manual.
The supposed arrow key types a letter The layer is not active, the wrong Fn key is being used, or the mapping is incorrect. Try the documented Fn key and profile. Test another secondary function such as volume or backlight. If all secondary functions fail, check the lock, firmware, and reset procedure.
Fn + Enter changed punctuation or letters A toggle arrow mode is active. Press the same toggle shortcut again. On the RK61, this is the documented arrow-mode behavior; affected keys can vary by revision.
The arrow legends are present but nothing happens The keycaps may have been replaced, the board may be in another profile, or the firmware keymap was changed. Check the model manual, test another Fn function, inspect the active vendor/VIA/QMK profile, and reset the board according to official instructions if necessary.
Arrows work in a text editor but not in a game The game’s binding, input mode, permissions, or input API is the problem. Bind the arrow inside the game first. If a software remapper is involved, try a firmware-level remap instead. Check the game’s anti-cheat and remapping policies.
VIA does not detect the keyboard The board lacks VIA-compatible firmware or the correct keyboard definition. Connect by USB, verify compatibility, and use the manufacturer’s exact definition if one is supplied. Do not import a definition for a similar-looking board.
The Fn key does not appear in a keyboard tester It is acting as a firmware layer switch rather than sending an ordinary keycode. Test the resulting arrow key instead. A missing standalone Fn event is normal on many layer-based keyboards.
Letters appear to be missing or behave strangely A toggle layer or profile is still active. Press the documented toggle again, switch to the default profile, or perform the manufacturer’s documented reset.

Detailed recovery sequence when arrows fail

  1. Confirm the form factor. Separate physical arrows may mean the board is 65%, not 60%.
  2. Confirm the exact model. Include wired or wireless version, ANSI or ISO layout, RGB variant, and revision if shown.
  3. Check the printed legends. Replacement keycaps can display a layout that does not match the firmware.
  4. Try the official manual. Manufacturer instructions take priority over generic IJKL or WASD guides.
  5. Test another secondary function. Volume, media, brightness, or backlight functions can show whether the layer is working.
  6. Check profiles and operating-system mode. Wireless boards may have separate Windows and Mac modes or multiple onboard profiles.
  7. Inspect the programmable keymap. For a compatible board, check VIA, QMK, Vial, or the manufacturer’s configurator.
  8. Reset only according to the official instructions. A reset can erase custom layers and profiles, so save the layout first where possible.
  9. Escalate to the manufacturer. If no secondary function works after the documented reset, the issue may be firmware or hardware rather than an unknown arrow shortcut.

Important edge cases

  • Product revisions can differ. Wired, wireless, RGB, ANSI, ISO, and later firmware versions can use different shortcuts despite sharing a product name.
  • There may be more than one Fn key. Check whether the manual refers to Fn1 or Fn2.
  • Fn may not be remappable. Some proprietary drivers expose only limited controls. QMK-based boards generally provide more freedom to redefine layer keys, as Royal Kludge explains in its comparison of traditional drivers and QMK.
  • VIA support is not guaranteed by QMK support. A board can run compatible QMK firmware yet lack an official VIA definition.
  • Layer order matters. In QMK, an active higher layer can override a lower one unless the key is transparent, commonly using KC_TRNS.
  • Fn is not the same as a laptop Fn key. On many mechanical keyboards, the firmware handles the layer and sends the resulting arrow keycode to the operating system.
  • A stuck layer can look like a hardware fault. Turn off a toggle layer, change profiles, or use the documented reset before assuming keys have failed.

For more background on why the form factor omits dedicated controls, see HyperX’s explanation of 60% keyboards. The important distinction is that a 60% board normally lacks a dedicated physical arrow cluster, but it can still produce ordinary arrow-key signals through firmware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are arrow keys built into a 60% keyboard?

A conventional 60% keyboard usually has no dedicated physical arrow-key cluster. It normally provides Up, Down, Left, and Right as secondary functions on another layer, accessed with Fn or a model-specific toggle. A 65% keyboard typically adds dedicated arrow keys.

Is Fn + IJKL universal?

No. It is a common arrangement, including on the default Razer Huntsman Mini layout, but Logitech’s PRO X 60 uses Fn + K, M, <, and >, while the Royal Kludge RK61 uses Fn + Enter to toggle arrow mode.

Can I use arrow keys without holding Fn?

Sometimes. A keyboard may provide a toggle arrow mode, a tap-hold layout, a programmable layer, or a vendor-software profile. If your board has only a momentary layer, you must hold Fn unless you remap the keyboard or use an operating-system remapper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Fn not show up in a keyboard tester?

On many mechanical keyboards, Fn is a firmware layer switch rather than a normal key that is sent to the operating system. Test the resulting arrow key while holding Fn instead.

Can I remap arrows on any 60% keyboard with VIA?

No. VIA requires compatible firmware and a matching keyboard definition. Confirm that the exact model is supported and use the manufacturer’s definition if supplied. Do not load a definition for a similar-looking board.

Is a 65% keyboard better for frequent arrow-key use?

If you use arrows constantly and dislike layers or toggles, a 65% keyboard is usually the simpler physical solution because it normally includes a dedicated arrow cluster. A 60% board remains smaller and more flexible if you are comfortable with layers.

Why do arrows work in a text editor but not in my game?

The keyboard is probably sending valid arrow codes, so check the game’s controls, input mode, permissions, and remapping policy. Rebind the action inside the game first. Hardware-level remapping is often more reliable than an operating-system remapper, which may not work with some games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with the arrow legends and the manual for your exact 60% keyboard. Hold Fn only if the board uses a momentary layer; use the documented toggle or tap-hold behavior if it does not. If the factory layout is uncomfortable, reprogram it with VIA, QMK, or vendor software when supported. Use Windows or macOS remapping only when firmware changes are unavailable, and choose a 65% keyboard if you want dedicated arrows without any layer shortcut.
