Download a Realtek driver only after identifying the exact controller and operating system. For a branded PC or laptop, use the manufacturer’s support page first. For a standalone Realtek Ethernet adapter, use Realtek’s controller-family listing; for Realtek audio, start with Windows Update. The correct package depends on the hardware ID, Windows edition or Linux distribution and kernel—not simply the word “Realtek.”
Identify the Realtek device before downloading anything
A single PC can contain several Realtek components, and their packages are not interchangeable. Establish whether you need an Ethernet, audio or another device driver before opening a download page.

Find the device in Windows Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X, then select Device Manager.
- For wired networking, expand Network adapters. Look for a name such as Realtek PCIe GbE, FE, 2.5GbE, 5G or 10G Family Controller.
- For sound, expand Sound, video and game controllers. A Realtek Audio, High Definition Audio or similar entry is usually the device to update.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, open the Details tab and select Hardware Ids. Copy the first value, which commonly begins with
PCIVEN_10ECfor a Realtek PCI device. - On the Driver tab, record the provider, date and version. Keep this information in case you need to roll back.
Record your Windows release and PC model
Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, version and OS build. Also record the exact laptop, desktop or motherboard model printed on the case or shown in the system information. A manufacturer package can be tied to one model even when two machines use similar-looking Realtek hardware.

Choose the safest download source
Use HTTPS pages operated by Microsoft, your PC or motherboard manufacturer, or Realtek. Avoid driver mirrors and “one-click” updater sites that hide the original publisher or bundle unrelated software.

Compare packages by more than version number
When two downloads look plausible, compare authority, exact hardware match, operating-system match, package type, recency and rollback support. An OEM package has the strongest model match for a laptop; Realtek’s listing has the clearest controller-family match for a standalone adapter; Windows Update has the simplest supported delivery path for audio. A newer version is not automatically the better choice if it targets a different family or omits the manufacturer’s customization.
Realtek’s download pages expose version, update date and file size. Use those fields only after confirming the chipset family. A small Windows installer and a Linux source archive are different package types, not interchangeable alternatives. Save the package name and version you install so you can identify it later or return to the previous OEM release.

If a Windows installer says that the package is unsupported, stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the hardware ID and use the OEM package for the exact model. A newer package can exist at the manufacturer even when Windows reports that the best driver is already installed.
Download and install a Realtek Ethernet driver in Windows
Option 1: use your PC or motherboard manufacturer
- Open the manufacturer’s support website and enter the exact model or service identifier.
- Choose your installed Windows edition and open the Network, LAN or Ethernet driver category.
- Compare the listed controller with the name and hardware ID from Device Manager. Do not select a package merely because its title contains “Realtek.”
- Download the installer from the HTTPS support page. If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it to a folder you can find again.
- Close applications that use the network, run the installer, accept the prompts and restart when requested.
OEM packages are particularly important on laptops and branded desktops. A Dell support page, for example, distributes a model-specific package for a Realtek PCIe Ethernet controller rather than asking every system to use one generic file. The same principle applies to motherboard support pages: select the board revision or model requested by the site, then read any installation notes before running the file.
Option 2: use Realtek’s PCIe controller listing
- Open the Realtek Download Center.
- Open the listing for PCIe FE/GbE/2.5GbE/5G/10G controllers.
- Match the family shown in Device Manager: FE, GBE, 2.5GbE, 5G or 10G. Do not substitute a different family because the connector looks the same.
- In the Windows section, select the Windows 10/11 installer. Check the version, update date and file size before downloading.
- Run the downloaded installer, allow it to replace the existing package and restart the PC. If the installer offers a repair or remove option, use the documented default unless you are deliberately performing a clean reinstall.

Legacy PCI GBE controllers
Older PCI Gigabit Ethernet hardware appears in a separate PCI GBE listing. It provides distinct installers for current and older Windows releases. Confirm that your hardware is actually in this legacy family before choosing it. The listing currently shows a 5 MB Windows installer, version 10.80.50, updated October 5, 2026.

Use another trusted connection or computer to reach the OEM or Realtek HTTPS page, download the matching installer, and transfer it by a local method. Keep the hardware ID and model information with the file so you do not accidentally install a similarly named package. After installation, restart before judging whether the adapter is working.
Install or reinstall Realtek audio drivers
Start with Windows Update
Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Windows Update is the recommended way to get the latest audio drivers.”
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates, including any offered driver update.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately request it, then test playback and recording.
Windows Update may deliver a package without a separate Realtek download. This is normal and avoids choosing an audio package for a different codec or motherboard.
Update through Device Manager
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the Realtek audio device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow the result.
- Restart and test the affected application, speakers, headphones and microphone.
If the device is malfunctioning, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, confirm the uninstall and restart. Windows will attempt to reinstall the device. If a checkbox offers to remove the driver package, use it only when you are prepared to install a known-good OEM package afterward.

Windows can report that the best driver is already installed even though a newer or more suitable package is available from the PC manufacturer. Search the manufacturer’s support page by exact model, download the audio driver for your Windows edition, run the installer and restart as instructed. This route is preferable when the laptop uses a customized audio console, microphone array or speaker configuration.

Compare the installed Driver Provider, Driver Date and Driver Version with the package you intended to use. If the generic update removes a feature that came with the laptop, return to the model-specific package rather than repeatedly installing unrelated Realtek files.
Download Realtek Linux drivers correctly
Linux hardware support is often already included in the distribution’s kernel or package repositories. Check your distribution’s documentation and available updates first. Compile a Realtek archive only when the distribution’s guidance calls for it; replacing a maintained distribution package with a manually compiled module can complicate future kernel updates.
Identify the controller and kernel
- Open a terminal and run
lspci -nnkto identify the Ethernet controller and the kernel module currently in use. For USB networking, uselsusb. - Run
uname -rand record the running kernel version. - Compare the controller family and kernel with the Realtek listing. A module name that looks similar is not sufficient; the family and supported kernel ceiling must match.

The version, date and kernel ceilings above describe the live listing at the stated time, not a guarantee that a module will work with every distribution. Your distribution may carry a patched or newer equivalent in its own repositories. A kernel newer than the stated ceiling is a reason to consult distribution guidance or a newer listing, not to force the archive to build.

Install only according to distribution guidance
- Prefer the distribution’s package manager and kernel module when they support your controller.
- If the distribution instructs you to use Realtek’s archive, download the matching module, read its included instructions and install the required build tools and headers through your distribution.
- Build and load the module exactly as documented for your distribution, then reboot or reload networking as instructed.
- Use
lspci -nnkagain to confirm that the intended module is attached. Check network connectivity and system logs for errors.
Verify that the driver actually solved the problem
Windows checks
- In Device Manager, the Realtek device should have no yellow warning icon.
- On Properties > Driver, confirm the provider, driver date and version you intended to install.
- For Ethernet, verify that the adapter appears in Settings > Network & internet and can obtain a connection.
- For audio, test speakers, headphones, microphone input and the application that originally failed.
Linux checks
- Confirm the expected module with
lspci -nnk. - Check that the network interface appears and obtains an address through your distribution’s normal network tools.
- Review system logs if the interface repeatedly disappears, fails after suspend or reports firmware or kernel-module errors.
Do not treat a completed progress bar as proof of success. The provider, version, device status and an actual network or audio test are the useful confirmation points.
Fix common download and installation failures
“The best driver is already installed”
This message means Windows found no better match in its current search. It does not prove that no newer manufacturer package exists. Check the exact PC model and hardware ID, then compare the OEM package with the installed provider and version.
“This package is not supported”
Usually the controller family, Windows edition or device model is wrong. Cancel the installer, return to Device Manager, copy the hardware ID again and choose the matching OEM or Realtek family. Do not force an installer intended for a different controller.

The new driver causes a regression
Open Device Manager, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available. Otherwise reinstall the prior OEM package you saved. Reboot and retest before trying another package.
No network after an Ethernet update
Confirm that the adapter is enabled, inspect Device Manager for an error code and verify that the correct family was selected. If the PC has another connection, use it to obtain the OEM package; otherwise copy the installer to the PC from another trusted machine. A rollback is appropriate if the failure began immediately after the update.
No sound after an audio reinstall
Check the selected output device and volume controls, then restart Windows Audio-dependent applications. Reopen Device Manager to see whether the Realtek device has a warning icon. If the generic package lacks your laptop’s enhancements, install the model-specific audio package from the manufacturer.
The Linux module will not build or load
Recheck the running kernel with uname -r, the controller with lspci -nnk, and the module’s stated kernel ceiling. Confirm that the distribution’s build tools and kernel headers are installed as its documentation requires. If the distribution already provides a maintained module, remove the manual path from consideration and use the supported package instead.
