It means Windows detected an error in a networking driver, usually somewhere between a physical or virtual adapter and the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) stack. The label does not identify one universally defective file or piece of hardware. The reliable fix is to identify the adapter or filter driver implicated by the crash dump, then update, roll back, remove or replace that specific component.
Work through the manual checks below in order. Preserve any dump files before using cleanup utilities, and do not replace ndis.sys simply because it appears in a blue-screen report; a third-party miniport or network filter is often the component that needs attention.

What BUGCODE_NDIS_DRIVER and 0x7C mean
A kernel-level networking failure
Microsoft defines the bug check this way: “The BUGCODE_NDIS_DRIVER bug check has a value of 0x0000007C. This bug check indicates that the operating system detected an error in a networking driver.” Because NDIS runs in the Windows kernel, a violation can stop the system rather than merely disconnecting Wi-Fi. You may see a blue screen while starting Windows, waking from sleep, joining a network, transferring a large file or launching an online game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the four parameters tell you
The first bug-check parameter identifies the type of NDIS violation. The meanings of parameters 2, 3 and 4 depend on that first value. A 0x7C label by itself therefore cannot name the failing adapter. The parameter values in a minidump or memory dump are needed to narrow the investigation.

NDIS miniports and filter drivers
An NDIS miniport is the driver that connects a physical or virtual network adapter to the Windows networking stack. That may be an internal Wi-Fi or Ethernet controller, a USB network adapter, a virtual switch, or another virtual interface. Additional filter drivers can be installed by VPN clients, firewalls, virtualization software and packet-capture tools. Any of these layers can participate in an NDIS failure, even when the report highlights Microsoft’s ndis.sys.
Is the error dangerous?
The stop code signals a serious software or hardware fault in the networking path, but it is not a diagnosis that your computer is permanently damaged. Repeated crashes can corrupt open work or interrupt game sessions, so treat the problem as urgent enough to preserve evidence and stabilize Windows. Do not assume that the adapter itself must be replaced: an incompatible driver, a recently added filter, or a bad update is at least as plausible.
Common causes and useful clues
- Recently changed hardware: A new Wi-Fi card, Ethernet adapter, docking station or USB network device can expose an incompatibility.
- Driver updates: A newly installed package may contain a defect or may not match your Windows build or exact hardware revision.
- Corrupted or incomplete installation: Interrupted updates, disk errors or failed rollbacks can leave a driver stack inconsistent.
- Incorrect NDIS operations: Microsoft documents invalid shared-memory operations, packet descriptors being reused incorrectly, and driver initialization or unload violations.
- Watchdog timeouts: An NDIS driver that stops responding can trigger a watchdog-related 0x7C failure.
- Third-party networking layers: VPN, firewall, virtualization and packet-capture filters can interact with a miniport and make the failing module less obvious.
- Hardware or firmware incompatibility: A physical adapter can fail, overheat or behave incorrectly with a particular driver version.
Keep a short timeline: note when the crashes began, what changed immediately beforehand and whether the failure occurs only on Wi-Fi, only on Ethernet, after sleep, or when a VPN or virtual machine is active. That pattern helps you choose which component to test first.

Prepare before changing drivers
- Save your work and record the crash details. Photograph the blue-screen text if necessary. Write down the Windows edition and build, the adapter model, and the date of the first crash.
- Preserve dump files. Copy any minidumps or a memory dump to another location before running cleanup or disk-repair tools. The dump may be the only record of the implicated module and parameters.
- Have a recovery path. Make sure you can sign in with an administrator account and have a known-good way to reach the manufacturer’s driver package, such as another computer or a wired connection. A rollback requires a driver package that matches the device.
- Change one variable at a time. If you remove several drivers or utilities together, you may lose the evidence needed to identify the actual cause.
Manual fix sequence
1. Remove hardware added just before the crashes
Shut down completely, disconnect a recently added USB network adapter or dock, or remove newly installed networking hardware if you can do so safely. Start Windows with the original configuration. If the blue screens stop, test the new device later with a current package for the exact model. If the crashes continue, reconnecting the device is not proof that it is healthy; continue with the dump and driver checks.

2. Use Safe Mode when normal startup is unstable
Safe Mode loads a reduced driver set. If Windows stays stable there, the full networking stack or a startup filter is more likely to be involved. From Windows recovery, choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Startup Settings and restart; select a Safe Mode option. If the machine cannot remain on long enough to reach recovery, use Windows installation or recovery media to enter the same environment.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair. Use it to copy dumps, remove a problematic adapter entry or roll back a package, then restart normally to test.
3. Identify the exact adapter and Windows build
Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Record the full name of every physical and virtual adapter, including the manufacturer and model. Open an adapter’s Properties, check the Details tab and select Hardware Ids to distinguish similar revisions. Also record the Windows version and build from Settings > System > About. These details prevent installing a package for a look-alike device.
4. Install Windows updates and the manufacturer’s network package
With your model and Windows build recorded, install applicable Windows updates. Then obtain the current network-driver package supplied for that exact PC, motherboard or adapter by its manufacturer. Prefer a package that explicitly supports your Windows edition and build. Restart and test the activity that previously triggered the crash.

If the manufacturer offers several packages, compare their release dates, supported Windows versions, hardware IDs and whether the installer provides a rollback option. Do not select a package solely because its version number is higher.
5. Roll back or uninstall a driver that preceded the problem
If the crashes began immediately after a network-driver update, open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the suspected adapter and choose Properties > Driver. Use Roll Back Driver when Windows has retained a previous package. If rollback is unavailable, choose Uninstall Device, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have a known-good replacement ready, and restart. Install the manufacturer’s known-good package after Windows comes back up.
Do not uninstall every network entry at once. Start with the adapter implicated by the dump or by the timing of the update. Virtual adapters and filter components may be needed by VPN or virtualization software; remove or update those products one at a time and record how to reinstall them.

6. Check Event Viewer for the surrounding failure
Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > System around the time of each blue screen. Look for warnings or errors naming an adapter, a driver service, a device reset or a preceding timeout. Event Viewer rarely proves the culprit by itself, but it can connect the crash to a suspend/resume event, link change or recently installed component. Save relevant event details before clearing logs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
7. Test without optional networking filters
Temporarily disconnect or disable third-party VPN, firewall, virtualization or packet-capture components if they were installed or updated near the first crash. Follow each product’s documented disable or uninstall procedure and keep a rollback plan. If stability returns, install a version that supports your Windows build or leave the filter removed; do not infer that the physical Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter is defective without retesting it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Find the offending driver with WinDbg
When ordinary updates and rollback do not identify the cause, analyze a saved dump with WinDbg. Microsoft’s NDIS debugging workflow starts with a good dump and the verbose analysis command:
!analyze -v
Read the bug-check parameters and the suspected module in the output. Parameter 1 tells you which class of NDIS violation occurred; use the remaining parameters according to that value rather than treating them as universal fields. A module name in the stack is a lead, not automatic proof: ndis.sys may be the component that detected a third-party error.
Next, inspect adapters and their associated drivers:

!ndiskd.netreport
Compare the adapter or miniport shown by these commands with your timeline. Pay particular attention to Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, VPN, firewall, virtualization and packet-capture drivers installed or updated shortly before the crash. Save the WinDbg output, the dump file and your rollback notes before attempting another reproduction.
Use NDIS Verifier only as a controlled advanced test
NDIS Verifier is an additional Microsoft tool for testing NDIS drivers. Verifier can deliberately stress a faulty driver and can make a system crash sooner, which may improve attribution but can also make an unstable computer harder to start. Use it only after preserving dumps and documenting how to disable it. Apply it to a narrowly selected suspect, reproduce the problem once, then return the verifier settings to normal and analyze the new dump.
Choosing between a driver replacement and a new adapter
A replacement adapter is justified only when diagnostic evidence points to hardware failure or incompatibility after a known-good driver has been tested. Before buying anything, compare candidates on these criteria:
Recommended Free Tools
| Criterion | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Hardware identity | Exact hardware ID, internal versus USB form factor, and the required bus or connector. |
| Windows support | Supported Windows edition and build, not merely a generic “Windows compatible” label. |
| Driver provenance | A package supplied by the PC, motherboard or adapter manufacturer, with a documented release date. |
| Recovery options | Whether you can roll back, restore a driver backup or return the hardware if testing fails. |
| Network role | Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, virtual or packet-filtering function; replacing a physical adapter will not remove a faulty software filter. |
Price or a higher advertised link speed is secondary to matching the hardware ID and Windows build. If the same 0x7C crash follows a different adapter, investigate shared filters, virtualization software or the operating system rather than buying another adapter.
Related stop code: BUGCODE_NDIS_DRIVER_LIVE_DUMP (0x15E)
Windows 8.1 and later can record BUGCODE_NDIS_DRIVER_LIVE_DUMP, stop code 0x0000015E, when NDIS detects and recovers from a serious networking-driver problem. A live dump does not necessarily halt the computer, but it can accompany dropped connectivity and may precede a fatal 0x7C crash. Preserve and analyze that dump using the same adapter, filter-driver and timeline checks.
What not to do
- Do not replace
ndis.syswith a download from an unrelated website. - Do not assume every 0x7C report means the Wi-Fi card is physically bad.
- Do not rely on a registry cleaner or a generic “driver fix” as proof that the cause has been removed.
- Do not install a random USB Wi-Fi adapter as a universal solution.
- Do not erase dumps or Event Viewer entries before identifying the implicated module.
- Do not enable broad driver verification on a production machine without a recovery plan.
When the crash continues
If 0x7C recurs after a clean, manufacturer-supplied driver and removal of recently added filters, compare dumps from separate crashes. A consistent miniport or filter points to that component; changing modules between crashes suggests a shared layer, memory corruption or hardware interaction that needs deeper Windows or vendor support. Provide support with the exact stop code, all four parameters, the dump, Windows build, adapter hardware ID, driver version, recent changes and the steps that reproduce the failure. That evidence is more useful than reporting only “my network driver crashed.”
