How to Download Saved Files from Steam Cloud

Use Steam’s Remote Storage page to download synchronized game saves, then back up your current files before restoring anything.

The quickest way to download a synchronized Steam Cloud save is through Steam’s Remote Storage page. Sign in to the correct Steam account, select the game, find the save by its filename and timestamp, and click its download control. Save the download outside your Steam folders and keep the untouched original before attempting a restore.

Before downloading a Steam Cloud save

  • Close the game.
  • Make sure Steam is online and has finished synchronizing.
  • Confirm that you are signed in to the Steam account that owns the game.
  • Check that the game supports Steam Cloud. Look for the Steam Cloud logo on its store page, or open Library → right-click the game → Properties → General and check its Steam Cloud setting.

Steam Cloud is optional and developer-controlled. It can synchronize saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific files, but it does not necessarily include every file used by a game. It is also not guaranteed to be a complete backup or a historical version archive.

Download a saved file from Steam Cloud

  1. Open Steam’s Remote Storage page in a browser.
  2. Sign in if Steam asks you to.
  3. Select the game whose files you want to retrieve.
  4. Review the listed filenames, sizes, and timestamps. Choose the file—or related group of files—that matches the progress you need.
  5. Click the file’s Download button or download icon.
  6. Save it to a separate folder, such as Steam Save Backups, rather than directly into the game’s save directory.

Keep the first download unchanged. If you need to rename or edit it, make a copy first and work from the copy. The Remote Storage page shows files currently available in Steam Cloud for that game and account; it should not be treated as a guaranteed version-history system.

Do not confuse Remote Storage with Steam Remote Downloads. Remote Storage retrieves synchronized user files. Remote Downloads remotely installs games on a computer.

Find Steam Cloud data on your computer

Steam’s local Cloud-related data commonly appears in these locations:

Platform Typical location
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata

Your Steam installation may be on another drive or in a custom directory. On macOS, the Library folder may be hidden in Finder.

The usual folder structure is:

Steam installation folder
└── userdata
    └── [Steam account ID]
        └── [game AppID]

Multiple account-ID folders can exist if more than one Steam account has used the computer. Game folders use numeric Steam application IDs. You can identify an AppID from the game’s Steam store URL or by comparing the files and dates inside the folders. Steam’s Cloud FAQ uses 570, the AppID for Dota 2, as an example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every file in an AppID folder is a playable save. Some files are metadata or Cloud-management data. The game may instead read its saves from Documents, AppData, a home-directory folder, or another game-specific location. Steam notes that third-party save locations vary; see its guide to Steam installation and game locations.

Restore a downloaded save

The exact restore process depends on the game, but this sequence is safest:

  1. Exit the game completely.
  2. Back up the current local save folder or files to a separate location. Copy rather than move anything.
  3. Find the game’s actual save directory using the developer’s instructions or the game’s support documentation.
  4. Copy the downloaded Cloud file into that directory.
  5. Keep the original filename and extension unless the game specifically requires a different name. Some games need several related files, not just one.
  6. Start Steam and the game only after your current files are backed up.
  7. Check whether the game loads the intended progress.

A downloaded save may be binary, compressed, encrypted, or tied to a particular game version or platform. It does not need to open as readable text to be valid. Avoid editing it with a text editor or save editor unless you know the format and have a separate backup.

If the game does not appear in Remote Storage

Check these possibilities:

  • The game does not support Steam Cloud.
  • Cloud synchronization is disabled globally in Steam client settings → Cloud.
  • Cloud synchronization is disabled for the game under Library → game Properties → General.
  • You are using a different Steam account.
  • The save was stored locally but excluded from Cloud synchronization.
  • The save was never created or never completed a successful upload.
  • The game uses another launcher or synchronization service.

Reinstalling Steam cannot create a Cloud copy of a file that was never synchronized. Check the old computer, the game’s own save folders, and any automatic-save or backup files before deleting or replacing anything.

If the downloaded save is old or missing progress

An older file may have been uploaded if the last session ended before synchronization completed, if the computer was offline, or if a newer save existed only on another machine. Compare the Remote Storage timestamp with your actual play sessions and inspect the old computer if it is still available.

You can also inspect Steam’s Cloud activity log, cloud_log.txt, under Steam’s logs directory. It may help show whether synchronization succeeded, although it cannot recover a file that was never uploaded.

Steam warns that lost Cloud data may not be recoverable. Steam Cloud should therefore supplement, not replace, your own backups.

Handle a Steam Cloud conflict carefully

A Cloud conflict means Steam found different local and Cloud versions. It cannot know automatically which progress you want to keep. The newest timestamp is useful evidence, but it is not always the correct choice—compare it with when you actually played.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do not click through the conflict dialog casually.
  2. Do not repeatedly launch the game while troubleshooting.
  3. Identify which computer contains the desired progress.
  4. Copy the local save folder to a separate backup location.
  5. Restore network connectivity and restart Steam so synchronization can complete.
  6. Compare both versions and then choose the appropriate local or Cloud option.

Do not disable Steam Cloud before backing up both versions. Starting the game repeatedly or selecting the wrong conflict option can overwrite the copy you wanted.

Platform and game-specific limitations

Steam Cloud may synchronize a file without guaranteeing that another build or platform can read it. Transfers between Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam Deck, and console versions depend on the game’s save format, paths, and developer support. A save can also be tied to a particular game version or require multiple files.

Games that use proprietary formats, another launcher, or a separate synchronization system may need game-specific instructions. The developer’s support documentation is the most reliable source for the correct save directory and restore procedure.

Steam Cloud is also different from Steam’s game backup feature: Cloud synchronizes selected user data, while installation backups concern game content. Neither guarantees recovery of a save that was never synchronized or backed up separately.

Quick recovery checklist

  • Confirm the correct Steam account.
  • Verify Cloud support and both global and per-game Cloud settings.
  • Close the game before copying or replacing files.
  • Download from Remote Storage and preserve an untouched copy.
  • Back up the current local save before restoring anything.
  • Compare timestamps with your real play sessions.
  • Check the old computer and the game’s non-Steam save folders.
  • Resolve Cloud conflicts only after preserving both versions.
  • Contact the game developer for unusual save formats or locations.
