On The Skindex at MinecraftSkins.com, open the page for the skin you want, click Download, and save the PNG somewhere easy to find. To use that file, follow the steps for your Minecraft edition: Java Edition imports it through the Launcher, while Bedrock uses Dressing Room for its standard character and skin options.
Download the skin PNG from The Skindex
- Go to MinecraftSkins.com and find a skin you want.
- Open that skin’s page and click Download. Your browser will prompt you to save the file.
- Choose a folder you can find again, such as Downloads, and keep the file as a PNG. Minecraft’s Java skin importer uses a flat, unwrapped PNG image.
Check the skin’s arm model before applying it. The official Minecraft guide describes the Classic/Wide model as having four-pixel-wide arms and the Slim model as having three-pixel-wide arms. Choose the model that matches the skin so its arm geometry displays correctly. Minecraft’s guide to skins explains the models and import process.

Use the downloaded skin in Java Edition
Minecraft’s Java Edition instructions, published June 5, 2023, use the Minecraft Launcher:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition from the left menu.
- Open Skins, then select New Skin.
- Enter a name for the skin and select Classic/Wide or Slim to match the downloaded skin.
- Choose the downloaded PNG file, then select Save and Use.
These Launcher steps are for Java Edition; they are not the Bedrock skin-import flow.

What to do with a skin in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock’s ordinary character customization is handled in game, rather than by uploading a downloaded PNG through the Java Launcher. From the start screen, open Dressing Room, select Create Character, then choose Character or Classic Skin. You can customize items or select default and Marketplace skins; Marketplace content may be free or paid. See Minecraft’s official edition-specific instructions.
When a custom Bedrock skin pack is needed
If you specifically need to import your own custom skin file into Bedrock, Microsoft documents a separate, more technical skin-pack process. It requires preparing the PNG and pack metadata and files, packaging them as an .mcpack, opening the pack to import it, and selecting the skin in Dressing Room. Microsoft’s guide also notes that the Only Allow Trusted Skins setting may need to be disabled if Minecraft does not recognize the skin. This pack workflow is different from simply downloading a skin and is not required for Java Edition. Details are in Microsoft Learn’s skin-pack documentation.

Make sure you are on the right Skindex site
The download steps here refer to The Skindex at MinecraftSkins.com. Its FAQ says the site’s operators run The Skindex and warns that similarly named sites may not be affiliated. For example, Skindex.pro describes itself as an independent site unaffiliated with Minecraft, Mojang, or Microsoft. Check the domain before downloading.
