Move wet books away from the water, support them fully, and begin drying small batches as soon as the area is safe. If you cannot air-dry them promptly, freeze them as a temporary holding measure. Do not seal damp books in storage, and treat sewage-contaminated water or active mold as hazards rather than ordinary cleanup.
What to do first
- Make sure the area is safe. Do not handle books in sewage or other potentially hazardous floodwater without appropriate precautions; seek qualified advice for contaminated collections.
- Separate dry books from wet ones. Triage wet items by severity, replaceability, and value. Rare, unique, or valuable books should go to a book conservator or professional recovery service.
- Support every wet book. Wet paper is fragile. Keep a closed book fully supported and do not lift it by its cover or inner pages. Avoid bending or forcing it open.
- Choose air-drying or freezing. Start air-drying a small batch immediately if you can. The Library of Congress advises preparing and freezing newly wet or moldy books if they cannot be air-dried within two days. The National Park Service describes freezing as stabilization until drying is possible. National Park Service wet-book guidance and the Library of Congress book-care FAQ explain these steps.
The National Park Service says mold may begin growing when objects remain damp for approximately 72 hours. Treat that as an urgent warning, not a safe waiting period: conditions vary, so dry promptly or freeze if prompt drying is not feasible.
How to air-dry a small batch
Set up a plastic-covered table with absorbent towels beneath the books. Use paper towels, blotting paper, or unprinted newspaper as interleaving; avoid printed paper that could transfer ink.
- For a damp book that can stand safely, lay it on its side and place interleaving every 20–30 pages.
- Stand the interleaved book on end on absorbent towels and fan the pages slightly. Do not force the book wide open; that can damage its spine.
- If it cannot stand without bending, lay it on its side and put blotters between every few pages.
- Check the interleaving often. Replace saturated sheets with clean, dry ones, and reverse the book’s head-to-tail orientation when changing them.
- Keep air circulating in the room. Use a dehumidifier if available, and continue replacing damp interleaving as needed.
For mud-soiled books, the National Park Service advises holding the book tightly closed while rinsing with clean water, then gently pressing it between towels or blotters to remove excess moisture. Do not use this as routine advice for sewage or otherwise hazardous contamination.

When and how to freeze wet books
Freezing is a holding step, not a way to finish drying a book. The Library of Congress recommends preparing and freezing newly wet or moldy books when air-drying within two days is not possible; the National Park Service says freezing can stabilize them until you can dry them in small batches.
- Gently shape the book without forcing it open.
- Wrap the cover and spine with wax paper, freezer paper, paper towels, or unprinted newspaper so covers are less likely to stick together.
- Freeze the books until you can work through them in manageable batches, then thaw and dry them carefully.
Guidance from the Northeast Document Conservation Center says wet books contaminated by rust, mud, or salt water should be rinsed before freezing. Its search-result guidance also describes vacuum freeze-drying as a recovery-vendor option for wet books, coated paper, and water-sensitive inks. Consult the NEDCC emergency salvage guidance and NEDCC freezing and drying guidance; direct access to those pages may vary.

When home drying is not the right choice
- Rare, unique, or valuable volumes: Contact a book conservator or professional recovery service rather than risking handling damage.
- Active mold: Treat it as a safety issue. The Library of Congress distinguishes active mold from mold staining and advises careful monitoring; get qualified help for substantial growth.
- Hazardous contamination: Books exposed to sewage or other hazardous floodwater need appropriate safety precautions and qualified advice.
- A large loss: The National Park Service says several or dozens of books may be handled in-house, while thousands are better suited to a professional company.
What professional drying methods can and cannot tell you
A 2008 National Park Service study compared drying and sterilization methods using surrogate books and paper samples. In those tested materials, thermal drying reduced paper mechanical strength by 15 percent, while gamma irradiation weakened comparable paper by 25 percent. Air drying, vacuum freeze-drying, vacuum packing, and drying in a Vacme press with Zorbix had essentially no deleterious effect on paper mechanical strength in the tested samples. These figures describe that study’s materials and conditions; they do not predict the outcome for every book.
The study also identifies practical trade-offs: air drying takes substantial labor and can distort books; vacuum freeze-drying can suit large quantities and coated stock; and pressing during drying can reduce distortion. How to store books after they are dry
Wait until books are fully dry before putting them into storage; sealing damp books can encourage mold. For valuable books, choose a location with stable conditions rather than a basement, attic, or garage, where temperature and relative humidity are poorly controlled and leaks or floods are more likely. For prolonged storage, use acid- and lignin-free boxes.
Polyethylene or polypropylene containers can provide secondary water protection, but the Library of Congress warns that plastic in a high-humidity area can increase mold risk. For mold-stained books with no active growth, it recommends maintaining ambient relative humidity between 40% and 65% and checking items regularly.

Reducing musty odor
The Library of Congress says musty odor may decrease over time with air circulation or exposure in a cool environment at 35%–55% relative humidity. You can place activated charcoal or baking soda in a closed container without letting it touch the book, and check the book regularly for mold. Odor treatment is not a substitute for addressing active mold.
