How to Dump Game Boy ROMs Using the Game Boy Itself

Francis Stokes’s custom Game Boy dumper reads a target cartridge in the console and sends its data through the link port for capture and conversion.

Francis Stokes’s method uses a Game Boy to read a game cartridge and sends the resulting data through the console’s link port for capture. It is a custom hardware-and-software project, not a plug-and-play backup process: a flash cartridge first loads the dumper into memory, then the target game cartridge is swapped in, and a host device records and converts the transmitted data.

How the Game Boy link-port dumper works

The method separates the cartridge that starts the program from the cartridge being read. The flash cartridge supplies the custom dumper; the commercial game cartridge is the target. According to Hackaday’s December 14, 2022 report, the Game Boy loads the program into memory from the flash cart before the user swaps in the target cartridge. The program remains available in memory and reads the target’s contents.

Rather than removing the target’s ROM chip, the Game Boy sends the data out through its link port. Hackster.io reports that a Saleae logic analyzer captures the signal and saves it as CSV data, which is then converted into a format usable by an emulator. The precise implementation and capture details here are those described in the reporting; neither report establishes that the method works with every cartridge or Game Boy revision.

What the process requires

  • A Game Boy and a Game Boy flash cartridge to load the custom code.
  • The game cartridge you want to read, inserted after the dumper has started.
  • A link cable and a suitable signal-capture setup. Hackster names a Saleae logic analyzer but does not identify a model.
  • Software to convert the captured CSV data into an emulator-usable format.

Hackster.io says the code is in Francis Stokes’s TEGA GitHub repository, but the reporting does not establish the repository’s current contents, build instructions, license, or compatibility. Treat it as a project to investigate, not a verified download-and-run tool.

Link-port dumping compared with removing the ROM chip

Hackster describes a conventional approach in which the cartridge is opened, its ROM chip is desoldered, and the chip is read with an EPROM reader/writer. These approaches have different equipment and handling demands; the reports do not provide comparative reliability testing or establish that one is universally safer.

Consideration Game Boy link-port method ROM-chip removal
Does the game cartridge need to be opened? No opening or desoldering is described in the reported method. Yes. The cartridge is opened and the ROM chip is desoldered, as described by Hackster.io.
Equipment Game Boy, flash cartridge, link cable, signal capture device, and conversion software; the report names a Saleae analyzer without giving a model. Hot-air rework equipment and an EPROM reader/writer, according to Hackster.io.
Risk to the cartridge The reported approach avoids desoldering the target chip. No comparative safety testing is reported. Hackster notes a risk of damage if the chip-removal process is handled poorly.
Capture and conversion Requires custom code, signal capture through the link port, and conversion of CSV data. Requires removing the chip and reading it with an EPROM reader/writer; the report does not specify a conversion workflow.

Troubleshooting the link-port signal

Signal quality is a practical concern. Hackaday reports that the initial error rate was high and that Stokes reduced interference by shortening the cable. The report gives no measured error rate or cable length, so this is an observed troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed fix or a specification for a successful setup.

Compatibility and legal limits

The reports do not provide a compatibility list for cartridge types, ROM sizes, or console revisions, nor do they establish measured performance. Do not assume the project supports every Game Boy cartridge. The reports also do not resolve whether making a ROM copy is lawful in a particular jurisdiction or situation; check the rules that apply where you live.
