For routine dust, steady the assembled model and lift dust gently with a clean, soft cloth, working around small parts instead of dragging across them. Treat this as a cautious technique for display models: LEGO’s cleaning guidance covers individual bricks, not a tested dusting method for built models. If the model needs more than dusting, the safest next step depends on whether it is assembled and whether it contains sensitive or electronic pieces.
How do you dust a LEGO model without loosening pieces?
- Place the model on a stable surface where you can reach it without holding it in the air.
- Support a sturdy section with one hand, avoiding pressure on small projections, thin connections, or decorative details.
- Use a clean, soft cloth to lift dust with light strokes. Work around delicate parts rather than pulling the cloth across them.
- Turn or reposition the model only when you can hold a solid section securely. Stop if a piece shifts; press it back into place only if you can do so without forcing surrounding parts.
LEGO recommends a soft cloth or sponge for hand-cleaning bricks, but does not specify a brush or an assembled-model dusting technique. The routine above is a careful practical application, not an official or tested LEGO procedure. A clean, suitably soft cloth is sufficient; microfiber is one option, not a required purchase.
When should you wash LEGO instead of dusting it?
Use dry dusting for ordinary surface dust. For grime that does not come away with gentle dusting, LEGO’s care guidance is for hand-cleaning bricks and pieces. It is not an instruction to immerse an assembled model. If you can safely disassemble the model, clean the loose bricks by hand; if it must stay assembled, avoid soaking it and use judgment around joints and sensitive parts.
Hand-washing loose bricks
The LEGO Group recommends cleaning LEGO pieces by hand with water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. A mild detergent may be added; rinse the pieces well with clear water afterward. These are the LEGO Group’s care instructions, not a reported test result. Sensitive, electronic, or metal-containing pieces
For these parts, LEGO advises wiping with a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil. The guidance does not say they can be soaked, so do not immerse them.
What cleaning methods should you avoid?
- Do not put LEGO pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher.
- Do not dry pieces in an oven, microwave, or with a hair dryer.
- Do not leave pieces to dry in direct sunlight. LEGO warns that heat can deform bricks so they no longer work properly.
These warnings concern LEGO pieces; avoid applying heat to a display model as well, since its parts can be affected by heat.
