Keep LEGO builds away from direct sunlight and heat, and display them in a dry spot. LEGO warns that direct sun can gradually affect a build’s color and that temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or cause discoloration over time. If a model is near a window, move it out of the path of direct sun.
Choose a safer display location
- Avoid direct sunlight. Choose a spot where the build will not regularly receive direct sun. LEGO recommends storing bricks away from it because exposure can gradually affect their color. LEGO’s storage guidance does not give a fading timeline or quantify how much sunlight causes a change.
- Keep the display away from heat. Avoid placing models beside heaters or in other hot locations. LEGO cautions that temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolor them over time.
- Prefer a dry spot. This is practical display guidance; the cited LEGO storage page lists dry storage among its recommendations.
A case can help organize a display, and LEGO lists clear storage bins and minifigure display cases as storage options. That does not establish that an ordinary case blocks UV. Treat it as UV protection only if the specific product’s current specifications support that claim.
Why can bricks discolor even without direct sun?
Sunlight is not the only factor LEGO identifies. Its guidance also names cigarette smoke and extreme temperature variations as conditions that can gradually affect a build’s color. These are possible contributors, not a diagnosis of why a particular piece changed; the guidance does not identify the cause for an individual model or give a timeline.
Not every difference in shade is damage. LEGO says slight color variations can occur between production batches, and recycled pieces may combine different shades. Compare similar pieces from the same set or batch where possible before concluding that a brick has faded.

Clean bricks without adding heat or sun exposure
- Hand wash pieces with water no hotter than 104°F (40°C). Use a soft cloth or sponge and, if needed, mild detergent.
- Rinse with clear water.
- Let pieces dry without direct sunlight. Do not use an oven, microwave, or hair dryer.
LEGO also advises against putting pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher. See its brick-cleaning guidance for the full care instructions.
What to do about severe discoloration
LEGO advises contacting the company when pieces are extremely discolored. Its guidance does not establish that a home restoration method will reverse discoloration, so avoid treating a DIY fix as guaranteed.
