The method depends on your edition: in Java Edition, combine leather armor and dye in a crafting grid; in Bedrock Edition, dye water in a cauldron and use the armor on it.

Mojang’s November 25, 2024 article by Duncan Geere confirms that Bedrock’s dyed water can dye leather armor, leather horse armor, and wolf armor. The Minecraft Wiki’s armor reference describes the Java crafting-grid method and edition differences.

Dye leather armor in Java Edition
- Open a crafting grid, such as the inventory crafting grid or a crafting table.
- Place one leather armor piece and one or more dyes anywhere in the grid. They do not need to form a shaped recipe.
- Take the colored armor from the result slot.
To change an already dyed piece, put it back in the grid with additional dye. Its current color contributes to the new result. Color combinations differ from Bedrock’s cauldron method; a Java recipe or sequence may not produce the same color in Bedrock. A Mojang-hosted Minecraft Feedback post discusses the distinction, but it is a player suggestion, not an official mechanics specification.
Dye leather armor in Bedrock Edition
- Fill a cauldron with water.
- Use a dye on the filled cauldron to color its water.
- Use a leather armor piece on the cauldron. The item takes its color from the water.
Each item uses one water level, while the remaining water stays dyed. You can use that water to dye more armor until the cauldron is empty. This method also applies to leather horse armor and wolf armor, according to Mojang’s cauldron guide.

Wash the color off in Bedrock
Use the armor on a cauldron containing undyed water to remove its color. The water level decreases as you wash an item.
Why dye colors may differ by edition
Java combines dyes with the armor’s existing color in a crafting grid. Bedrock combines each added dye with the water color already in the cauldron. Because the methods differ, do not assume a dye combination or order that works in one edition will give the same result in the other.
