You can earn Battle Pass progress and eligible free rewards in Overwatch without buying Premium: play matches, direct progress toward the rewards you want, and take advantage of event challenges when they explicitly award Battle Pass XP. In Season 5, match XP can advance the current pass and one Unvaulted Pass at the same time. The exact free reward tiers are shown in the in-game Battle Pass.
How to make progress on the current Battle Pass
Play matches to earn Battle Pass XP, then use the in-game pass display to track progress and see which rewards are available to you. Blizzard’s Season 5 overview confirms that match XP progresses the current pass, but does not publish a complete free-track reward schedule or tier requirements. Prioritize a reward you want
The Season 5 overview says the revamped pass lets players choose which Legendary Battle Pass skin to pursue first. Blizzard introduced this flexible approach in Season 4: after an introductory track, players could choose which Legendary skin to work toward. Know what Premium changes
Free progress does not unlock every Premium reward. The Tier Hack described in Blizzard’s Season 4 announcement—which swaps an eligible Legendary reward for a cosmetic from a seasonal Swap Pool—was limited to Premium Battle Pass owners, so it is not a free reward-selection option.

Use an Unvaulted Pass alongside the current pass
Season 5 introduced revised passes from Seasons 1–15. If you had already made progress on one, your free-track progress carries forward. You can direct match XP to the current pass and one Unvaulted Pass simultaneously. After completing an active Unvaulted Pass, it automatically advances to another available pass unless you choose otherwise. An acquired Unvaulted Pass remains available on your account. Choose based on the rewards you want
Use the in-game pass options to decide whether your XP should also progress an available Unvaulted Pass. It offers eligible legacy rewards, not a full recreation of the original Premium reward set. Blizzard says Unvaulted Passes exclude Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, and Mythic Hero and Weapon Skins.

Check event challenges for Battle Pass XP
Some event challenges provide another way to earn Battle Pass XP, but rewards depend on the event. In Season 5’s Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, completing challenges earned Offerings, and each Offering pledged awarded Battle Pass XP. Blizzard listed the event dates as October 6 through November 2, 2026; consult the current game or event announcement for whether an event is still available and what its challenges reward.
