The combat trophies become manageable when you treat parries and posture breaks as the core loop, change your equipment when a boss counters your plan, and reserve the two maximum-level materials needed for the missable Abyssal Eviction. Finish the story, unlock the complete arsenal, then make a controlled attempt at Jackknife and revisit earlier areas for cleanup.
What makes Valor Mortis’s trophies difficult?
PowerPyx rates Valor Mortis’s 39-trophy set at about 5/10 difficulty and estimates 15–25 hours for the platinum. There are no difficulty options and no online trophies. One trophy is missable; the rest can generally be completed through the story or by returning to earlier areas after the final boss.

| Challenge | What you must do | Execution demand | Failure or timing concern | Best time to attempt it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In His Own Image | Complete the game | Maintain reliable combat decisions across the campaign | A full-game finish is required | During the main story |
| Abyssal Eviction | Upgrade Shield Transmutation to level 5 | Resource planning rather than reflexes | Missable; only two maximum-level upgrade materials exist | Before spending either scarce material elsewhere |
| Jackknife | Deal damage with every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation without dying | Weapon cycling, encounter control and survival | One death invalidates the clean run | Late game or post-story, after the arsenal is complete |
| Story boss trophies | Defeat the bosses on the story route | Parry timing, posture management and loadout adaptation | Failed attempts cost time, but ordinary boss trophies are cleanup-friendly | When each boss appears, or during later revisits where available |
This distinction matters. In His Own Image is the hardest trophy in the overall ranking because it asks for a complete campaign, while Jackknife is the most demanding single combat-stunt cleanup. Abyssal Eviction is the trophy most likely to disappear permanently from a save because its upgrade materials are limited.
The combat loop that wins difficult fights
Parry until posture breaks
The combat guide’s central recommendation is to parry an enemy’s attacks until its posture breaks. That break creates a Critical Attack window. Do not treat a parry as merely a defensive success: the posture damage is the reason to take the risk. Against a boss, look for a repeatable attack you can read, parry consistently, and use to build the break rather than chasing damage with unplanned swings.

- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
Once the posture break occurs, take the Critical Attack immediately. The value comes from converting several disciplined defensive exchanges into a guaranteed offensive opening. If you miss the timing, return to the same parry pattern instead of forcing a second attack into a recovered boss.
Use Target Lock and Combat Assist as alignment tools
Target Lock can keep your attacks aligned with a moving enemy. If attacks regularly miss because a boss is circling, repositioning or leaving the camera, enable it before changing your entire build. Combat Assist is another option when attacks are repeatedly failing to connect. These settings do not replace timing; they reduce avoidable misses so that your parry-and-posture plan can function.
Recognize attacks that cannot be parried
The combat guidance highlights at least one showcased ranged attack that cannot be parried. When an attack is in that category, stop trying to win the exchange with a perfectly timed block. Create distance, dodge or reposition, then resume your normal parry rhythm when the boss returns to a vulnerable pattern. A failed parry attempt against an unparryable projectile is a positioning mistake, not evidence that your timing is inconsistent.

Xbox’s launch tips state that melee strikes restore health, while Ferrofluid Flasks no longer heal. Survival therefore depends on accurate aggression: use melee pressure to recover health rather than waiting for a flask to solve a mistake. This makes a safe, controlled approach better than a purely defensive one. Parry, break posture, land the Critical Attack, and use the resulting melee sequence to stabilize your health.
Spend Catalysts on durable advantages first
For difficult fights, the combat guide recommends prioritizing Maximum Health and Melee Damage with Catalysts. Maximum Health gives you more room to survive a missed read; Melee Damage shortens the number of successful cycles required to finish an encounter and improves the value of the attacks that restore health. If a boss is still stalling you after several attempts, review these durable upgrades before trying the same encounter unchanged.

Boss trophies: route, preparation and recovery
Boss trophies follow the story route. The roadmap identifies General Lothaire as the first main boss, The Iron Marshall as the second and the Sphinx as the third; later chapters continue the same progression structure. The sources do not establish a universal weapon or single attack pattern that defeats every boss. Instead, Xbox Wire’s launch guidance says that every major boss has a strategy that works best against it. Use that principle as a decision process rather than repeating one failed loadout.
General Lothaire
As the first main boss, General Lothaire is an early test of whether you have learned the parry-to-posture loop. Enter with Target Lock if camera movement is causing whiffs. Study the boss’s readable attacks, parry the attacks that are valid targets, and reserve your damage for the Critical Attack window. If an early attempt fails, change one variable—Transmutation, firearm combination or an inventory item—so you can tell whether the new setup solved the problem.

The Iron Marshall
The Iron Marshall is the second main boss in the roadmap. By this point, a player who has relied on unplanned attacks may find that the posture break arrives too slowly. Keep the same defensive discipline, but reassess Melee Damage and Maximum Health Catalyst spending. Any ranged move that the combat guide identifies as unparryable should be handled with space and movement, not a last-second parry attempt.
The Sphinx
The Sphinx is the third listed main boss. Approach it with a complete plan for how you will regain health: melee strikes are your recovery mechanism, so accuracy matters more than simply staying close. If one Transmutation or firearm combination is not producing safe openings, follow the launch advice and test a different combination instead of grinding attempts with an unsuitable toolset.
Later story bosses
Later chapters continue the boss-progression structure, but the supplied roadmap does not provide additional boss names or specific counters. Apply the same checklist to each encounter: identify attacks that can be parried, note any ranged attack that requires a dodge or reposition, build posture toward a Critical Attack, and alter the loadout when the boss repeatedly defeats the same plan.
After a failed attempt
- Write down which attack caused the death and whether it was parryable.
- If the attack was parryable, practice that timing on regular enemies before returning.
- If it was not parryable, create a distance or dodge response and stop spending attempts on forced parries.
- Change a Transmutation, firearm combination or inventory item when the boss is not giving you safe openings.
- Check that your Catalyst priorities support the fight rather than adding only a temporary fix.
How to secure the missable Abyssal Eviction
Abyssal Eviction requires Shield Transmutation to reach level 5. PowerPyx reports that the trophy is missable because only two maximum-level upgrade materials are available. Those materials are the critical resource in the entire trophy list: once both have been spent elsewhere, the save may no longer contain enough to reach level 5.

Use a material ledger
- Record every maximum-level material as soon as you obtain it.
- Keep both entries assigned to Shield Transmutation until the level-5 upgrade is complete.
- Do not spend either material on another upgrade because an alternative build looks attractive in the moment.
- Confirm the Shield Transmutation level in the upgrade screen before moving on.
This is a planning trophy, not a boss-rush trophy. You can continue practicing parries and defeating story enemies normally, but keep the two maximum-level materials outside your general spending pool. The roadmap does not require a separate level-select condition for cleanup; the Shield Transmutation resource check is the exception that must be handled during the campaign.
If you are unsure whether a material was spent
Pause before making another upgrade. Check Shield Transmutation’s current level and your remaining inventory, then compare that information with your ledger. If both maximum-level materials have already been used elsewhere and Shield Transmutation is below level 5, treat the trophy as at risk on that save rather than assuming a later area will provide a replacement.
How to earn Jackknife without throwing away the run
The index labels Jackknife as a late-game cleanup trophy. You must deal damage with every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation without dying. The requirement combines preparation—having the full arsenal—with execution, because one avoidable death can end the attempt.
Wait until the arsenal is complete
Do not start a serious Jackknife run while weapons or Transmutations are still locked. Unlock the full arsenal first so that you are not forced to interrupt the sequence for a missing item. Make a written checklist with three columns: melee weapons, firearms and Transmutations. Tick an item only after it has dealt damage, not merely after it has been equipped.

Choose controlled encounters
Attempt the sequence in an area where you can control enemy spacing and identify a safe target. The requirement is about registering damage, not proving that every item can defeat a boss. Use Target Lock when alignment is unreliable, and avoid unnecessary fights between checklist entries. Because a death invalidates the no-death condition, a short, readable encounter is preferable to a high-reward but chaotic battle.
Cycle deliberately
- Enter the encounter with the checklist visible outside the game.
- Deal confirmed damage with one melee weapon.
- Repeat for each remaining melee weapon, pausing to verify the target was hit.
- Cycle through every firearm and confirm damage before switching again.
- Use each Transmutation once for confirmed damage.
- Leave the area or finish the encounter only after every checklist entry is marked.
Do not interpret a near miss as completion. If the camera, enemy animation or projectile effect makes the hit unclear, repeat that item while the encounter is still safe. The conservative choice is faster than discovering after a death that one weapon never registered.
Recovering from a failed Jackknife attempt
A death means the current attempt is over; it does not mean the trophy is impossible. Return to the checklist, identify the item most likely to have been missed, and begin a fresh run after selecting a safer encounter. Do not add extra weapons or experimental upgrades mid-run. The goal is a repeatable sequence, not maximum damage per second.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why In His Own Image is the hardest trophy overall
In His Own Image is awarded for completing the game and is the roadmap’s hardest trophy. Unlike a single boss trophy, it tests every combat decision across the campaign: parry timing, posture breaks, movement against unparryable ranged attacks, resource use and the willingness to change equipment when a strategy stalls.
Build campaign habits early
- Practice parries on regular enemies instead of saving the skill for bosses.
- Use posture breaks as your normal damage plan so Critical Attacks feel automatic under pressure.
- Apply melee strikes accurately to recover health, since Ferrofluid Flasks no longer heal.
- Spend Catalysts on Maximum Health and Melee Damage when building for difficult encounters.
- Keep the Shield Transmutation material requirement visible from the beginning.
Completing the campaign also gives you the natural opportunity to secure story boss trophies. Do not restart the game solely to chase a boss trophy unless your own save has a specific problem; ordinary areas remain accessible after the final boss for cleanup.
Best Value
A trophy-safe order for a first playthrough
- Start a resource ledger. Reserve the two maximum-level materials for Shield Transmutation and record their status.
- Learn the combat loop on normal enemies. Parry, build posture damage and use the Critical Attack window.
- Defeat story bosses as they appear. Begin with General Lothaire, then The Iron Marshall, then the Sphinx, adapting your equipment to each fight.
- Protect the missable upgrade. Reach Shield Transmutation level 5 before spending either maximum-level material elsewhere, securing Abyssal Eviction.
- Finish the campaign. Completing the game awards In His Own Image, the hardest overall trophy according to the roadmap.
- Unlock the full arsenal. Wait until every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation needed for Jackknife is available.
- Run the controlled Jackknife checklist. Deal damage with each item without dying.
- Revisit earlier areas. Clean up remaining trophies, Ambers and side content after the final boss.
Post-game cleanup and what can wait
Most areas remain accessible after the final boss. That makes ordinary exploration, Ambers, side content and many combat-stunt attempts suitable for post-game cleanup. The roadmap also says there is no level-select requirement for general cleanup. You can therefore prioritize survival during the story instead of detouring for every collectible or experimenting with every weapon before the final encounter.
The exception is Abyssal Eviction. Returning to an area later does not solve a shortage of maximum-level materials if both were already spent elsewhere. Secure the Shield Transmutation level-5 upgrade during the campaign, then use the post-game state for the flexible tasks: remaining exploration, arsenal cycling and any ordinary boss or combat trophies you postponed.
Troubleshooting difficult combat attempts
“My parries are landing, but the boss is not breaking posture.”
Verify that you are parrying attacks that actually contribute to posture damage, then stop mixing random hits into the pattern. A boss that is not reaching a break may also be exposing too few safe attacks because your loadout is unsuitable. Change a Transmutation, firearm combination or inventory item and test the new plan rather than repeating the same exchange.

“I keep dying to a projectile.”
Use the combat guide’s warning as a diagnostic: at least one showcased ranged attack cannot be parried. Create space, dodge or reposition. The correct response is movement, not a tighter parry window.
“I run out of health even when I avoid some hits.”
Ferrofluid Flasks no longer heal. Use accurate melee strikes to restore health, and convert posture breaks into Critical Attacks instead of backing away indefinitely. If the margin remains too small, spend Catalysts on Maximum Health before another attempt.
“A weapon does not seem to count for Jackknife.”
Repeat the hit in a safe encounter and mark the checklist only when damage is unmistakable. Equipping an item is not enough; the trophy requires dealing damage with every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation. Avoid continuing after an uncertain hit if doing so would expose you to an unnecessary death.
“Can I finish the story first and clean up later?”
Yes for most trophies. Prior areas remain accessible after the final boss, and the roadmap reports no level-select requirement for general cleanup. No for the Shield Transmutation material plan: Abyssal Eviction is the one trophy that requires advance resource discipline.
Quick checklist before the final boss
- Shield Transmutation: level 5 reached, with both maximum-level materials accounted for.
- Combat fundamentals: you can parry a repeatable attack, recognize a posture break and take the Critical Attack window.
- Ranged defense: you know which showcased ranged attacks require dodging or repositioning rather than parrying.
- Healing: you are using melee strikes for recovery instead of relying on Ferrofluid Flasks.
- Build: Catalysts support Maximum Health and Melee Damage where the fight demands it.
- Cleanup plan: you have postponed only tasks that can safely be revisited, such as ordinary exploration and the full Jackknife arsenal run.
Final verdict on the hardest trophies
Plan around Abyssal Eviction, practice for In His Own Image, and postpone Jackknife until the arsenal is complete. The trophy list is rated moderate rather than extreme because the game gives you a repeatable combat solution: parry, break posture, execute the Critical Attack, recover through melee and change your equipment when a boss demands a different answer. The only irreversible planning trap is spending the two maximum-level Shield Transmutation materials before reaching level 5.
