To edit Minecraft world data with NBTExplorer, make a complete backup, stop Minecraft or the server, open the relevant NBT file (usually level.dat), change the tag value, choose Save All Modified Tags, and replace the original file. Test the edited copy before treating the change as permanent.

What NBTExplorer edits
NBTExplorer is a tree-based editor for Minecraft’s Named Binary Tag (NBT) data. Instead of changing a setting through Minecraft’s normal menus, you open the file that stores the world information, expand its tags, and edit a value directly. World settings stored in NBT can include rules and properties that are not exposed by the in-game interface.

The most familiar target is level.dat, the metadata file in a world folder. Editing it can alter an existing world’s settings without creating a new world. The same technique can be used on a copied server world, provided the server is offline while the file is being changed.
There are important limits. The current release number and release date of NBTExplorer have not been confirmed here, and compatibility with current Minecraft Java Edition or Bedrock data versions has not been established. Treat every edit as experimental until the world opens and behaves correctly. Never make the first attempt on the only copy of a valuable world.

Before you open a file
Make a restorable backup
Copy the entire world folder, not only the file you intend to edit. Keep the untouched copy in a separate location and give it a clear name such as world-backup-before-nbt-edit. A complete copy lets you recover from a wrong value, a failed save, or a world that no longer loads.
- For a single-player world, quit Minecraft completely before copying.
- For a server, stop the server process and wait until its console confirms that it has shut down. Copy the world after shutdown, so pending writes are included.
- If the world is stored remotely, download it to your computer before editing and retain the original remote copy until verification is complete.
Stop every process that can write the world
Do not edit while Minecraft is open. A running game can keep files locked, hide files that have not been flushed to disk, or write the old value back when it closes. The same risk applies to a server, a backup task, or a control panel that automatically restarts the server.
Obtain the editor carefully
Guides point to the project’s GitHub Releases page. The repository found at github.com/redwyre/NBTExplorer is described in search results as a mirror, so confirm that the page is the original author’s project before downloading and running an asset. Select the latest release asset shown there, but note that a current version number and release date have not been independently confirmed.
A separate site, nbtexplorer.net, claims to provide current, clean download links. That claim has not been verified, so the project’s provenance and the downloaded file’s integrity should be checked before use. Do not confuse NBTExplorer with the separate NBTEditor project on SourceForge; they are different applications.

Find and open the world file
Single-player worlds
- Close Minecraft and the launcher if it keeps the game process alive.
- Locate the folder for the world you backed up. Open the folder that contains the world’s files rather than a parent folder containing several worlds.
- In NBTExplorer, use its Open command and select
level.dat. If the file is not visible, verify that Minecraft is closed and that you selected the actual world folder. - Open the file and wait for the tag tree to finish loading before clicking values.
Do not begin with level.dat_old unless you are intentionally examining the older automatic copy. Your edited file should be the copy you backed up and selected for the change.
Server worlds
- Stop the server and download or copy the complete world directory.
- Open the copied directory locally and select its
level.datfile. - Make and retain a second untouched copy before saving any changes.
- After verification, upload the edited file to the server using the same filename and location as the original.
One server-editing procedure recommends removing or renaming the existing remote file before uploading the edited file with the same name. Do this only while the server is stopped and only after you have a separate backup. Leaving two files with similar names can cause you to edit one copy while the server loads another.

How to change a tag in NBTExplorer
- Expand the file tree. Select the root entry for the opened NBT file and expand the compound tags beneath it. World settings are commonly grouped under a data compound; the exact path depends on the setting and the Minecraft data version.
- Identify the setting by name. Read the tag name and its current value. Do not change a nearby tag merely because its name looks similar.
- Edit the value. Double-click the tag or use the editor’s value control. Enter the value required by the setting. Preserve the tag’s data type unless the instructions for that particular setting explicitly require another type.
- Commit the edit. Click Save All Modified Tags. Saving the tree view or closing the window without this command may leave the file unchanged.
- Close and replace. Close NBTExplorer, then copy the saved file back over the original only after confirming that the edited file is the one you intended to deploy.
- Test. Start the game or server and load the world. Check the setting in-game and watch for errors before allowing players to continue.
Keep a written note of the original value, the new value, the filename, and the date. That small record makes it possible to reverse a change without guessing which tag was altered.
Example: turn on hardcore for an existing world
A commonly cited example changes the world’s hardcore value from 0 to 1. The procedure is:

- Back up the complete world and stop Minecraft or the server.
- Open the copied
level.datin NBTExplorer. - Expand the world data until you find the hardcore tag.
- Double-click its value, change
0to1, and leave the tag type unchanged. - Choose Save All Modified Tags.
- Replace the original file, or upload the edited file to the stopped server after removing or renaming the old remote file.
- Start the world and verify the result before playing on the only remaining copy.
Hardcore changes can have irreversible gameplay consequences. Make the backup before editing, and test the result with a copy of the world first. If the world does not behave as expected, restore the untouched backup instead of making a series of speculative edits.
Single-player and server handling compared

The file name alone is not enough: verify the directory, world name, and upload destination. A successful upload to the wrong world is still a failed edit.
What the editor shows and what not to change
NBTExplorer presents nested compounds and typed values. A byte, integer, long, string, list, or compound is not interchangeable simply because the displayed number looks the same. For a documented setting, change only the value requested and preserve its existing type. Avoid renaming tags, deleting neighboring tags, or reordering data unless a specific procedure calls for it.
If you cannot find a setting, search the expanded tree by its exact tag name and compare the surrounding compound with a known-good copy. The absence of a tag may indicate a different Minecraft data version, a different file, or a setting that is not stored in level.dat. Do not create a new tag based on a guess.

Some worlds contain additional files besides level.dat. Editing the wrong file can produce no visible change, while editing a player, region, or data file with an incorrect value can damage part of the world. Start with the narrowest change and a test copy.
Platform and compatibility cautions
Windows-style application
NBTExplorer is presented as a Windows-style program. The current release and its exact operating-system support have not been confirmed, so check the release notes attached to the asset you download rather than relying on an old tutorial.

macOS and Linux
One guide says Mac or Linux users need the latest Mono runtime, while another lists mono-core and mono-winforms as minimum Linux packages. Those package claims could not be tied to a specific authoritative page and should be treated as unverified. A separate guide mentions a native Mac UI build, also without a confirmed version. If the application fails to launch, verify the runtime requirements for the exact release and use a disposable copy of the world while testing.
Java and Bedrock data
Compatibility with current Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock data formats has not been verified. Do not assume that an editor that opens one world version can safely write every newer or different edition’s files. Check the resulting world on the same edition and version that created it, and retain the original backup until the test is complete.

Troubleshooting an edit that does not work
The file is missing or will not open
- Close Minecraft or the server completely and try again.
- Confirm that you selected the world folder’s
level.dat, not a similarly named backup or a folder containing several worlds. - Copy the file to a local writable directory and open that copy.
- If the editor still cannot read it, stop and restore the backup rather than attempting to repair binary data by hand.
The value reverts after restart
- You may have edited a copy that was never copied back to the active world.
- A server may have remained online and rewritten the old value.
- The upload may have gone to a different world directory or retained a different filename.
- Another administrator or automated backup may have restored the old file.
Stop the server, identify the active world directory, remove or rename the old remote file as required by the host’s procedure, upload the saved file with the exact original name, and verify the timestamp before restarting.
The world will not load
Stop immediately and restore the complete pre-edit backup. Do not overwrite that backup with a failed copy. If the backup loads, repeat the procedure with one change only and compare the original and edited tag values before saving.

Check the exact release’s operating-system and runtime requirements. Mono-related requirements for Mac and Linux are reported inconsistently, so do not install packages solely from an old tutorial. If a native build is unavailable for your system, perform the edit on a supported computer using the copied world, then transfer the verified file back.
A repeatable safe-edit checklist
- Identify the edition, version, world, and exact file you intend to change.
- Stop Minecraft, the server, and any automation that can write the world.
- Copy the complete world folder and keep the untouched copy separate.
- Download NBTExplorer from a source whose project identity you have confirmed.
- Open the copied
level.datand locate the documented tag. - Record the original value and change only the required value and type.
- Click Save All Modified Tags before closing the editor.
- Replace the original file only when the server or game is still stopped.
- For a server, remove or rename the old remote file first when required, then upload the edited file with the same name.
- Restart, load the world, and verify the setting.
- Keep the backup until normal play or server operation has confirmed the change.
This process is deliberately conservative: NBT edits are powerful because they bypass normal in-game safeguards, and the same power makes a typo difficult to diagnose without an untouched copy.
