How to Edit Root-Protected Files Over SFTP With FileZilla

FileZilla cannot sudo over SFTP. Learn how ownership, groups, mode bits and directory permissions determine whether you can edit a root-protected file—and the safe administrator workflow when they do not.

FileZilla cannot turn an SFTP session into a root session. Log in with the account that is supposed to deploy or administer the site, verify the file’s owner, group and mode, and then make the smallest permission change that gives that account access. If the file belongs to root or another account and your login has no suitable group access, stop changing modes in FileZilla: an authorized administrator or your hosting provider must correct ownership, arrange shared-group access, or perform the edit over SSH.

What “root-protected” means in an SFTP session

SFTP authenticates one server account for the entire connection. FileZilla can display a file because that account can read the directory, but a listing does not grant root privileges or write access. The server checks the account’s identity every time it opens a file for writing.

Authentication and authorization are separate

Your password or SSH key proves which account you are using. The account is then evaluated against the target file’s owner, owning group, mode bits and the permissions on every parent directory. A successful login therefore does not mean that you can edit every visible file.

Directory access can fail even when the file looks writable

To replace or save a file, the account normally needs to traverse each parent directory and, depending on the operation, write to the directory that contains the file. A file can show a write bit while its parent directory blocks creation, replacement or renaming. Conversely, a readable directory listing does not imply that its files are writable.

Decide whether FileZilla is the right tool before changing anything

FileZilla’s File permissions dialog can change permission bits when the connected account is allowed to do so. FTP and SFTP cannot change file ownership, however. Files uploaded through an SFTP login belong to the account used for that login, not automatically to root or to the web server account.

Use this decision rule:

  • Correct owner or usable deployment group: inspect the current mode and make a narrowly scoped change in FileZilla or through an approved shell command.
  • Wrong owner and no usable group access: ask an administrator or the host to change ownership or group policy, or have the administrator perform the edit over SSH.
  • Unclear environment: treat the path as production until you have proved that it is staging, and do not experiment with recursive permission changes.

Prepare a safe edit

Back up both files and data

Before touching production, make a local copy of the current file and a server-side rollback copy where your operating procedure allows it. Back up the database as well when the change affects a content-management system or application configuration. A file backup cannot restore data that a configuration change has made inaccessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the web root and environment

Confirm the host, account, remote directory and site name. Many accounts expose more than one domain, release directory or staging tree. Check the application’s documented web root rather than assuming that the first directory shown by FileZilla is the live site. Record the original path, owner, group and mode before editing.

Choose an account intentionally

Use an account created for deployment or site administration. Do not share a personal administrator key merely to bypass a permission error, and do not infer privileges from the ability to browse. If your host provides a separate deployment account, use that account consistently so uploaded files receive the intended ownership.

Step-by-step: edit a file with FileZilla when ownership is already correct

1. Configure the SFTP connection

  1. Open File > Site Manager and create or select the site entry.
  2. Set the protocol to SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol.
  3. Enter the host, username and the host’s password or SSH-key authentication details. SFTP commonly uses port 22 unless the provider specifies another port.
  4. In FileZilla Pro, an SSH key can be added under Edit > Settings > Connection > SFTP, or a key file can be selected in Site Manager, according to the host’s instructions.
  5. Connect and confirm that the status log shows the intended account and server.

If the host rejects the key or password, fix authentication first. Repeatedly reconnecting with a different account can make it difficult to tell which account owns files created during troubleshooting.

2. Locate the exact file and expose hidden entries if necessary

Use the remote pane to navigate to the verified web root or staging path. Configuration files such as .htaccess may be hidden. If the file is missing from the listing, enable Show hidden files or Force show hidden files and refresh the directory. Do not create a replacement simply because the original is not visible.

3. Inspect ownership and permissions over SSH when possible

FileZilla’s listing is useful, but shell inspection gives a clearer view of every parent directory. If shell access is available, run:

ls -l /path/to/file
namei -l /path/to/file

ls -l records the file’s owner, group and mode. namei -l shows permissions on each directory in the path, helping identify a blocked traversal step. Save the output before making a change.

Ask three questions:

  • Is the SFTP account the file owner?
  • Does it belong to the file’s owning group, and does that group have the needed bit?
  • If neither applies, is an explicit “other” write bit present, and is using it acceptable under the host’s security policy?

The third option is usually less desirable than a properly managed owner or deployment group because it grants access to every account classified as “other.”

4. Download an original before editing

Download the current file to a clearly named local backup. Preserve its encoding and line endings where the application requires them. If the file is a script or configuration file, keep the original extension and avoid editing a compressed or generated copy when the application expects a source file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Edit locally and upload deliberately

Edit the downloaded copy with an editor that preserves the file type. Review the diff or compare the edited file with the backup. In FileZilla, upload to the exact verified directory and watch the transfer result. If the server asks whether to overwrite, confirm the path and filename one more time before accepting.

When a direct overwrite fails but you can write elsewhere, do not silently leave a temporary file in the web root. Uploading a temporary copy can be useful only as part of a controlled workflow in which an administrator validates it and moves it into place with the intended owner and mode.

6. Change only the required mode bits

Right-click the target in the remote pane and choose File permissions. Enter the required numeric mode, apply it to the named file, and avoid selecting a recursive option unless your documented deployment procedure explicitly calls for one. Reconnect or refresh and verify the resulting mode.

For many WordPress installations, hosts commonly use 755 or 750 for directories and 644 or 640 for ordinary files. These are examples, not universal rules: the correct values depend on the host, the web-server account and the deployment model. Sensitive files such as wp-config.php generally need stricter protection than ordinary public files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Test the application, not just the transfer

After uploading, load the affected page or run the application’s health check. Check the server or application log for a syntax error, failed include, configuration parse error or permission warning. A successful SFTP transfer proves only that the transfer completed; it does not prove that the web process can read the file or that the edit is valid.

8. Keep a rollback path

If the change causes an error, restore the saved original rather than making several unrelated permission changes. Record what was changed, when, by which account and with which original and final modes. That audit trail makes a later ownership correction safer.

When ownership is the blocker

Why changing the mode may not solve it

If root or another account owns the file, your SFTP account may be unable to change its mode at all. Even if the server permits a mode change, granting broad write access to bypass the owner can expose a production configuration and leave the wrong account responsible for future updates. FileZilla cannot transfer ownership through SFTP.

Use an administrator-controlled handoff

Give the administrator the verified path, the requested change and the original backup. The administrator can assign the appropriate owner, place the file in a shared deployment group, or perform the edit over SSH. A controlled pattern is:

  1. Upload a temporary file to a location your deployment account is allowed to use.
  2. Tell the administrator its exact path, intended destination and expected mode.
  3. Have the administrator inspect the contents, move it into the production path and set the site’s intended owner and group.
  4. Verify the resulting owner, mode and application behavior.

If you cannot obtain shell administration, open a hosting-provider request that includes the domain, remote path, SFTP username, current error and the narrowly scoped ownership or group correction needed. Do not send a private key or password in a support ticket.

Permission modes in practical terms

Unix modes contain three sets of permissions: owner, group and other. Within each set, read, write and execute are represented by numeric values 4, 2 and 1. Adding the values produces a three-digit mode.

Mode Typical interpretation Use with caution
755 Owner can read, write and traverse; group and other can read and traverse. Often used for web directories when the host’s model requires public traversal.
750 Owner has full access; group can read and traverse; other has no access. Useful when the web or deployment group is explicitly managed.
644 Owner can read and write; group and other can read. Common for ordinary web files where public read access is intended.
640 Owner can read and write; group can read; other has no access. Appropriate only when the service account is in the intended group.

On a directory, “execute” means traversal: entering the directory and accessing known names. On a regular file, execute means the ability to run it as a program. Do not copy a directory mode onto files or a file mode onto directories without checking what the application requires.

Why recursive chmod 777 is the wrong fix

Setting read, write and execute permissions for owner, group and other may make an error disappear, but it allows every local account classified as “other” to alter the target. A recursive change can also modify private configuration files, uploads, caches and directories that require different modes. Incorrect permissions can take a site offline as well as weaken it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the least permissive setting that supports the required operation. Prefer correcting the owner or creating a narrowly scoped deployment group over granting world write access. If a hosting guide gives a different mode, follow that host-specific model and document why it is needed.

Choosing among the available fixes

Situation Preferred action Owner after deployment Audit and rollback
The SFTP account owns the file; only a bit is missing. Change the named file’s mode in File permissions or with an approved shell command. Unchanged and already correct. Simple to record and reverse.
The account is in the owning group, but group access is missing. Ask an administrator to apply the narrow group mode or correct group membership. Remains under the shared owner/group policy. Good when membership is controlled and documented.
The file belongs to root or another unrelated account. Administrator or host changes ownership/group access or performs the edit over SSH. Set deliberately by the administrator. Best for production because the change is reviewable.
The target is staging and disposable. Use the staging deployment account, still avoiding broad recursive modes. Follows the staging deployment model. Restore from the staging backup if needed.

The deciding factors are ownership after deployment, restriction to the correct group, reversibility, host support for SSH, and whether the path is production or staging. A direct mode edit is appropriate only when ownership and authority are already correct.

Troubleshooting “open for write: permission denied”

Symptom Likely cause Next check
File opens for reading but cannot be saved. The account lacks the applicable owner, group or other write bit, or the parent directory is not writable. Run ls -l and namei -l; compare the account with the owner and group.
FileZilla can list a folder but cannot upload into it. The directory lacks write permission for the account, or a parent directory blocks traversal. Inspect every directory in the path, not only the file.
The File permissions dialog is unavailable or changes do not stick. The account is not authorized to change the mode, or the owner/group policy resets it. Ask the administrator or host to confirm the ownership and deployment policy.
Hidden configuration file is not visible. Hidden-file display is disabled. Enable Show hidden files or Force show hidden files, then refresh.
Upload succeeds but the site returns an error. The edit introduced a syntax or configuration problem, or the web process cannot read the resulting mode. Restore the backup, inspect the application/server log and verify the final mode.
New uploads are owned by the wrong account. The login account does not match the site’s intended deployment owner. Stop changing individual modes and have an administrator correct the owner or shared group.

A production-safe operating checklist

  • Identify the exact host, account, domain and environment before connecting.
  • Confirm SFTP rather than plain FTP and use the host’s specified port, normally 22 for SFTP.
  • Back up the file and, where relevant, the database.
  • Download the original and record owner, group and mode.
  • Inspect parent-directory traversal permissions when a file appears writable but replacement fails.
  • Use FileZilla’s File permissions dialog only for a narrowly scoped, authorized mode change.
  • Never use recursive 777 as a diagnostic shortcut.
  • Escalate ownership problems to an administrator or hosting provider.
  • Test the application after the transfer and retain a rollback copy and change record.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use sudo inside FileZilla?

Not as part of a normal SFTP connection. FileZilla sends SFTP operations as the authenticated account; it does not provide an interactive privilege-escalation shell. An administrator must perform the privileged operation over SSH or change the account’s ownership and group access first.

Does seeing a root-owned file mean I can edit it?

No. Visibility and write authority are different checks. A root-owned file may be readable while denying writes, and its parent directories may impose additional restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I make a configuration file world-writable temporarily?

No. Temporary world-write access can be left behind, exploited by another local process or reset the site’s security boundary. Use the correct owner or deployment group, or have an administrator make the change.

Why did a permission fix work once and then disappear?

A deployment process, host policy or administrator may recreate the file with a different owner or mode. Capture the resulting owner and group, then fix the deployment policy rather than repeatedly editing the mode by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use sudo inside FileZilla?

Not in a normal SFTP connection. FileZilla operates as the authenticated account; an administrator must use SSH or correct ownership and group access.

Does seeing a root-owned file mean I can edit it?

No. Listing or reading a file does not grant write authority, and parent-directory permissions also apply.

Why did a permission fix disappear after deployment?

The deployment process or host policy may recreate the file with a different owner or mode. Correct that policy instead of repeating manual mode edits.
