How to Set Up Passwordless PostgreSQL Access for a Deploy User

Set up a deploy user that connects to PostgreSQL without interactive password prompts. Use peer over a local Unix socket, configure pg_hba.conf safely, map differing account names with pg_ident.conf, and use restricted SCRAM with .pgpass for remote runners.

For a deployment process running on the same machine as PostgreSQL, use a dedicated database login with peer authentication over a Unix-domain socket. PostgreSQL then verifies the operating-system account instead of asking for a password. Add a narrowly scoped local rule in pg_hba.conf, reload the server, and test the exact command your deployment uses. Remote runners cannot use peer; they need a restricted host rule with password authentication (normally SCRAM) and a protected password file such as .pgpass.

What passwordless access means in PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL does not have one global “disable the password” switch. Every connection is matched against the server’s host-based authentication file, normally called pg_hba.conf. PostgreSQL reads the records from top to bottom and applies the first record that matches the connection’s type, database, user and (for network connections) source address. A later, safer-looking line cannot override an earlier match.

Passwordless therefore describes the authentication method, not the permissions of the account. A successful login only proves the client may assume a database role. The role still needs CONNECT on the target database and the object privileges required by the migration or release process. Keep those grants as narrow as the deployment tool allows.

The safest practical design depends on where the runner executes:

Method Connection scope Interactive password prompt Security property Main caveat
peer Local Unix-domain socket only No Maps the operating-system identity to a database role Requires the process and PostgreSQL server on the same host, with matching names or an explicit identity map
trust Any connection covered by its HBA rule No None beyond network and HBA reachability Any allowed client can claim the named database role; a broad rule is unsafe
SCRAM plus .pgpass Local socket or TCP No interactive prompt Password authentication, with file-permission protection A secret still exists, must be protected and rotated, and is unsuitable for an exposed command line

Choose the correct connection path first

Same host: use a Unix socket and peer

When the release service, CI worker or deployment account runs on the PostgreSQL host, a local socket avoids network exposure and lets PostgreSQL compare the client’s Unix user name with the requested database role. This is the normal passwordless setup.

Be explicit about the socket path in the deployment command. A command that supplies a host name or an IP address uses TCP and will not match a local rule. Conversely, omitting the host generally lets libpq choose a local Unix socket when one is available.

Different host: use a restricted host rule

A remote runner cannot use peer, because the database server cannot inspect the runner’s local operating-system account. Use a host HBA record that names one database, one role and the runner’s exact source CIDR. The example address below is documentation-only; replace it with the runner’s real fixed address or a tightly controlled network.

# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
host    appdb     deploy_user  203.0.113.10/32 scram-sha-256

Put this specific record above broader host records. SCRAM still authenticates with a password, but a correctly configured password file prevents an interactive prompt. If the runner’s source address changes unpredictably, solve that network-identity problem rather than widening the CIDR to the entire internet.

Create a dedicated deployment role

Do not reuse a human administrator, the operating-system superuser or an application owner for automated releases. Create a login role dedicated to migrations and grant only the database and schema capabilities those migrations need. Keep the Unix account used by the release service separate from human accounts so its identity and audit trail are unambiguous.

CREATE ROLE deploy_user LOGIN;
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE appdb TO deploy_user;

The exact object grants depend on your migration framework and schema policy. A migration that only changes existing tables may need limited table and sequence privileges; one that creates or alters objects may additionally need CREATE on the application schema. Grant those capabilities explicitly rather than making the role a superuser. Review and revoke temporary migration rights after a release if your process permits it.

Authentication and authorization are separate checks. A perfect peer match does not bypass a missing CONNECT grant, a denied schema privilege or a row-level security policy.

Configure local peer authentication

1. Find the active HBA file

Edit the HBA file used by the running PostgreSQL instance, not an identically named sample file from another installation or major version. PostgreSQL tooling and the service configuration can show the active path. If you can connect as an administrator, inspect the server’s configuration settings to confirm which file is in use before editing.

2. Add a narrowly scoped local rule

Insert a rule before any broader local records that might otherwise match first:

# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
local   appdb     deploy_user           peer

local means a Unix-domain socket connection. It has no address column because the client is local to the server. The rule permits the operating-system identity that PostgreSQL receives from the socket to authenticate as deploy_user; it does not permit an arbitrary remote machine to use that role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Handle different Unix and database names with pg_ident.conf

If the service account is named deployer but the database role is deploy_user, a direct peer match will fail. Define an explicit map in pg_ident.conf, then reference it from HBA:

# pg_ident.conf
# MAPNAME    SYSTEM-USERNAME  DATABASE-USERNAME
deploymap   deployer         deploy_user

# pg_hba.conf
local   appdb   deploy_user   peer map=deploymap

Use the real account and role names in your system. Keep the map limited to that exact relationship; do not use a wildcard that lets every Unix account become the deployment role. The map only establishes identity equivalence. The role still needs its normal database privileges.

4. Reload, do not merely save

PostgreSQL reads HBA configuration at startup and again when the server receives a configuration reload signal. After editing, reload the running instance:

SELECT pg_reload_conf();

The function returns a Boolean result. A true result means the reload request was accepted, not that every line parsed successfully. Administrators can inspect pg_hba_file_rules to find parse errors and see how PostgreSQL interpreted the records. Fix any error before relying on the new rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test as the actual service account

Run a harmless connection test using the same Unix account, database and connection style that the deployment job will use:

sudo -u deploy_user psql --dbname=appdb --command='SELECT current_user, current_database();'

This command is an example procedure; substitute the real service account and role names. The result should show deploy_user and appdb. A privilege check confirms that authentication and database authorization both work:

sudo -u deploy_user psql --dbname=appdb --command="SELECT has_database_privilege(current_user, current_database(), 'CONNECT');"

Run the migration’s own dry-run or harmless status operation next. A test made as your personal account, with a different host option or against a different database does not validate the production path.

Configure a remote deploy runner

Scope the HBA record to the runner

For a remote process, add a host line that identifies the exact database, role and source network. For a single fixed address:

# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
host    appdb     deploy_user  203.0.113.10/32 scram-sha-256

Place it above broad records such as a general application subnet rule. PostgreSQL stops at the first match, so ordering is part of the security configuration. Confirm that firewalls, security groups and listen_addresses expose PostgreSQL only to the intended runner network.

Why broad trust is dangerous

The trust method performs no authentication. PostgreSQL’s documentation states that anyone who can connect through a matching trust rule can log in as any PostgreSQL user they choose without a password or other authentication. On a broad network line, that means a compromised host or any reachable client can claim deploy_user (or another named role) without proving an identity.

A narrowly isolated laboratory socket may have a legitimate trust use, but it is not a substitute for identity controls in production. Never add a wide host all all 0.0.0.0/0 trust rule to stop a migration prompt. If you must use trust for a controlled maintenance window, restrict the database, role, source CIDR and duration, then remove it and reload the configuration.

Use .pgpass when a password is required

SCRAM is appropriate when the deploy host is remote or policy requires password authentication. Store the secret in the deploy account’s password file rather than embedding it in a command line or script. libpq reads the first matching line in the file; each line has this format:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
hostname:port:database:username:password

An asterisk (*) can match a field. Escape a literal colon or backslash inside a field with a backslash. Keep the entry as specific as practical: naming the actual host, port, database and role avoids accidentally supplying the same secret to unrelated connections.

Protect the file on Unix

chmod 0600 ~/.pgpass

PostgreSQL ignores a password file that permits group or world access. The file must belong to the deploy account, and the account’s home directory and any parent directories should not allow other users to replace or read it. In a service, set PGPASSFILE to an explicitly managed path when the default home directory is unavailable, and apply the same ownership and mode checks.

Keep secrets out of process listings

Avoid PGPASSWORD in production automation. Operating-system tools and diagnostics can expose environment variables to other processes or to job logs. A protected password file is the libpq-supported alternative, but it remains a secret: rotate it, limit who can read it, and remove stale entries when a runner is retired.

Test the TCP path, not a socket by accident

Force the same host and port that the migration uses so you exercise the host rule and the password file:

psql --host=db.internal.example --port=5432 --username=deploy_user --dbname=appdb --command='SELECT current_user, current_database();'

Verify configuration and permissions systematically

  1. Confirm the target. Record the PostgreSQL instance, database name, role name, socket or host, and port used by the deployment job.
  2. Confirm the active files. Verify the paths for pg_hba.conf and, if needed, pg_ident.conf on that instance.
  3. Check rule order. Find the first record matching the connection type, database, role and source. Move the specific rule above any broader match.
  4. Reload and inspect errors. Run SELECT pg_reload_conf();, then inspect pg_hba_file_rules for parse errors.
  5. Prove identity. Run SELECT current_user, current_database(); under the real service account or from the real runner.
  6. Prove authorization. Check has_database_privilege(current_user, current_database(), 'CONNECT') and perform the least-destructive migration permission check available.
  7. Exercise the real client. Use the migration command with its production connection variables, not an administrator’s shell session.
  8. Review the resulting access. Confirm logs show the intended role and source, and remove any temporary rule or grant created for diagnosis.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Peer authentication failed for user The Unix account name does not equal the database role, or the map is absent or incorrect. Run the client as the intended service account; verify the pg_ident.conf map and the peer map=... reference.
The new rule appears ignored An earlier HBA record matched first, or the edited file is not active. Confirm the active HBA path, inspect rule order, reload, and review pg_hba_file_rules.
A local job asks for a password The client is using TCP, the local rule does not match the database or role, or the process is running as another Unix account. Remove unintended host options, verify the socket connection, and test with the exact service account.
Remote job still prompts The .pgpass line does not match the resolved host, port, database or role, or the file permissions are too open. Compare every field, account for DNS names versus IPs, set mode 0600, and check PGPASSFILE.
no pg_hba.conf entry No record matches the connection’s type, database, role or source address. Add a narrowly scoped record, place it correctly, reload, and verify the runner’s actual source CIDR.
Authentication succeeds but migration fails with permission errors The role lacks CONNECT, schema, table, sequence or DDL privileges required by that migration. Grant only the missing capability and rerun the least-destructive check; do not solve authorization errors with trust or superuser access.
Reload reports success but connections still use old behavior A syntax error prevented one or more records from loading, or the client is reaching another PostgreSQL instance. Inspect pg_hba_file_rules, confirm the server identity and active file path, and retry against the intended endpoint.

Operational safeguards for deployments

  • Use one role per automation function. Separate schema migration, application runtime and administrative identities so a stolen deployment credential cannot perform unrelated work.
  • Keep the Unix account non-human. Disable interactive login where appropriate, restrict who can run commands as it, and audit ownership of its home directory and password file.
  • Prefer explicit database and role names. Avoid all in production HBA rules unless the entire set is intentionally covered and documented.
  • Pin network sources. A single runner address or controlled private subnet is safer than a broad range. Revisit the rule when runner infrastructure changes.
  • Review changes as code. Store HBA and identity-map changes in the same controlled process as deployment configuration, with peer review and rollback instructions.
  • Reload after every HBA or identity-map change. A saved file has no effect until PostgreSQL rereads it.
  • Log and monitor failed attempts. Unexpected role names, source addresses or repeated authentication failures can reveal a misconfiguration or attack.
  • Revoke temporary rights. If a migration needs elevated DDL privileges for one release, remove them after the migration and verify the resulting grants.

Decide between peer, trust and SCRAM

Choose peer when identity is local and stable

Peer is the best fit for a deploy process co-located with PostgreSQL. It provides no password prompt, does not place a secret on disk, and ties the database login to the Unix account. Its boundary is the server host: it cannot authenticate a remote runner, and name mismatches require a carefully restricted identity map.

Choose SCRAM with .pgpass for remote automation

SCRAM plus a protected password file works across local and TCP connections and keeps the migration non-interactive. It introduces secret-management duties, including rotation, file ownership and protection from logs and process inspection. Limit the HBA source range and the role’s grants so the password is not the only control.

Do not choose broad trust to remove prompts

Trust removes proof of identity entirely for every client matched by the rule. Its safety depends on every permitted client and the network path remaining trustworthy. That is a fragile assumption for production deployment infrastructure, so restrict it to exceptional, tightly bounded cases or avoid it.

Reference configurations

Local runner with matching names

# pg_hba.conf
local   appdb   deploy_user   peer
sudo -u deploy_user psql --dbname=appdb --command='SELECT current_user, current_database();'

Local runner with an explicit name map

# pg_ident.conf
deploymap   deployer   deploy_user

# pg_hba.conf
local   appdb   deploy_user   peer map=deploymap

Remote runner with SCRAM

# pg_hba.conf
host    appdb   deploy_user   203.0.113.10/32   scram-sha-256
# ~/.pgpass
 db.internal.example:5432:appdb:deploy_user:replace-with-managed-secret

Remove the leading space shown in the last example; a valid .pgpass line starts with the hostname. Store the real secret through your deployment secret-management process, set the file to mode 0600, and test with an explicit --host command so the remote rule is exercised.

Final validation checklist

  • The deployment uses a dedicated login role, not a human or superuser role.
  • The role has CONNECT and only the schema and object privileges required for the release.
  • The HBA rule names the intended database and role and appears before broader rules.
  • Local automation uses a Unix socket and peer; remote automation uses a restricted host rule.
  • Any Unix-to-database name translation is an exact, reviewed pg_ident.conf map.
  • PostgreSQL was reloaded and pg_hba_file_rules shows no parse errors.
  • The test was run as the real service account or from the real runner and displayed the expected current_user and database.
  • A password file, when required, matches the actual connection fields and is readable only by the deploy account.
  • No broad trust rule or password in a command line or exposed environment variable remains.
