To edit spigot.yml, stop the Minecraft server, open the file in the server’s root directory (or the equivalent configuration page in your hosting panel), change only the required values while preserving YAML indentation, save it, and restart the server from the console. spigot.yml is the main configuration file for a Spigot-based Minecraft server. It contains server-wide behavior and sections that can be overridden for individual worlds. Paper is built on Spigot and uses the same file, although Paper’s documentation can describe options differently from the Spigot documentation for a particular version.
The file is plain text in YAML format. It is not a plugin configuration stored in a plugin folder. A malformed file can prevent settings from loading and, in serious cases, can stop the server from starting, which is why editing a copy and making small changes is safer than replacing the whole file.

Before you edit: a safety checklist
- Confirm which server software is running: Spigot, Paper, or another Spigot-derived build.
- Record the server version and the date of the change. A setting documented for one release may have a different default, type, or availability in another.
- Stop the server cleanly before opening the file. XGamingServer’s instructions specifically recommend stopping first, and the other hosting guides describe the same stop-edit-restart workflow.
- Make a backup copy of the current
spigot.yml. Give the copy a useful name such asspigot.yml.before-timeout-changeso you can identify it later. - Know how to restore the backup through your file manager, SFTP client, or hosting panel before making the edit.
- Change one logical group of settings at a time. If several unrelated values are changed together, it becomes harder to identify the cause of a problem.
Where to find spigot.yml
Self-managed server
On a server you administer yourself, spigot.yml is normally in the server root directory, alongside files such as bukkit.yml. The root is the directory from which the server starts and where the main server jar, worlds, and configuration files are commonly kept. It is not normally inside plugins.
If you cannot see it, check the directory used by your startup service or script. A common mistake is opening a different test server directory, an old backup, or a local client folder rather than the directory used by the running server.
Hosted server panel
Hosting panels expose the same file through different labels. Some provide a file manager that opens the server root; others generate a dedicated configuration form. Shockbyte places the file under Config > Spigot Settings. XGamingServer and Pine Hosting describe opening the file through their server-management interface before saving and restarting.

How to edit spigot.yml safely
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s stop control or issue a normal stop through the server console. Wait until the process has ended and the panel shows it as offline.
- Open the live file. Browse to the server root, or open the panel’s Spigot configuration page. Check the file’s modification time if you have several copies.
- Create a backup. Download the file or duplicate it in the panel. Do not overwrite the only known-good copy.
- Find the setting. Use your editor’s search function for the exact key. Read its surrounding indentation and nearby comments before changing anything.
- Change only the value you need. Keep the key spelling, colon, indentation, and value type intact. Do not reformat unrelated sections.
- Save the file in plain text. A panel may save automatically; verify that it reports a successful write. If using a desktop editor, ensure it did not add a rich-text format or an unexpected filename extension.
- Restart from the console or panel. Pine Hosting’s workflow applies the saved values by restarting the server. A restart also makes it possible to see parsing errors during startup.
- Verify the result. Watch the startup log, connect to the server, and test the behavior controlled by the setting. If the result is unchanged, stop before making more edits and use the troubleshooting section below.
YAML rules that matter
Indentation defines the structure
YAML uses indentation to show which value belongs to which section. Preserve the existing spacing exactly where possible. A key moved one level left or right can become a different setting, and an incorrectly indented block may fail to load. Use spaces rather than tabs, and copy the indentation of a neighboring entry instead of guessing.

Keep the value’s data type
Documentation identifies whether an option expects a Boolean, number, or text value. A Boolean is written as a YAML Boolean such as true or false; a numeric option should remain numeric; a script or path is text. Do not put quotation marks around a value unless the existing format or the matching documentation requires them.
Preserve keys and punctuation
The colon after a key is significant. Do not rename a key because its wording looks outdated, and do not replace a hyphen with an underscore. If a setting is not present, first check the reference for your exact server version rather than inventing a new key.

Changing one value is easier to review and reverse than rewriting the file. Keep the original order and surrounding formatting. If your editor shows a comparison view, confirm that only the intended lines changed before uploading the file.
Understanding the file’s layout
The exact sections vary by Spigot or Paper release, so the names in your file are authoritative. Many installations contain top-level groups for general server behavior and a world-settings section. The latter can hold defaults and world-specific overrides.

Do not copy a complete spigot.yml from a different Minecraft version without checking it. A copied file can contain removed options, omit new ones, or carry values that are unsuitable for your build. The safer approach is to keep the generated file from your installation and edit the particular entry documented for that version.
Setting different values for individual worlds
A world-specific override is useful when one world needs different behavior from the server default. For example, an administrator might want a special configuration for a resource world while leaving the main survival world unchanged.

A SpigotMC community forum thread describes the following pattern: under world-settings, add a section named after the world folder, copy the relevant default settings into that section, and change the values for that world. Because this guidance comes from a community discussion rather than a formal reference, confirm the syntax against the documentation for your server build and test it on a backup before using it on a production world.
- Identify the exact world-folder name on disk. The name is case-sensitive in some operating environments.
- Locate the existing default block under
world-settings. - Copy only the settings you need into a block named for that world, retaining the same indentation level.
- Change the selected value in the world block, not in the default block, if the goal is to affect only that world.
- Restart the server and test while standing in the target world. Test another world as well to ensure the override did not become global.
If a world-specific change has no effect, the usual causes are a misspelled folder name, incorrect indentation, a key that is not valid for that software version, or a setting that is read globally rather than per world. Remove the override and return to the backed-up file if you cannot verify the behavior.

Where to check what each setting means
Use documentation that matches the software you run. Paper’s reference documents individual spigot.yml options with an explanation and a default. The SpigotMC wiki documents settings with their default and type. If you run Paper, compare the Paper reference with the Spigot wiki rather than assuming that a description or default from one project applies unchanged to the other.

Defaults can change between releases. Treat a value shown in a reference as version-qualified information, not as a universal rule. If the reference and generated file disagree, verify the server version and follow the documentation for that build.

Several names are commonly looked up when administrators first edit the file. The table explains what to investigate without assigning a universal default; the correct default depends on the Spigot or Paper version and the reference you use.

Why a spigot.yml change is not applying
Work through the causes in order. Do not keep editing while the server is running; first establish that the correct file was saved and loaded.

Reading logs and confirming the result
Start with the first configuration-related message in the startup log. Later errors can be consequences of the first parsing failure. Record the exact key named in the message and compare its indentation with neighboring entries in your backup.
After a successful start, verify the setting in the context where it matters. A global option should be checked with a normal player session or server command; a world override should be checked in both the target world and a world that should retain the default. Do not assume that a clean startup proves the value has the intended gameplay effect.
If the panel provides a configuration preview or saved-file history, use it to confirm that the value reached the server. Some panels expose a form rather than the raw YAML; in that case, save through the form and then inspect the resulting file if the panel allows it.
Rolling back a bad edit
- Stop the server if it is still running and producing errors.
- Replace the edited file with the backup made before the change.
- Save or upload the restored file using the same panel or file-transfer method used for the edit.
- Start the server and confirm that it returns to its previous state.
- Compare the failed edit with the backup to identify the exact formatting or value problem before trying again.
Restoring only spigot.yml normally targets the configuration change itself. Do not delete worlds or plugin data as a first response to a YAML error; those files are unrelated to repairing this configuration file.
Best practices for ongoing maintenance
- Keep a dated copy of the last known-good file and the reason for each change.
- Apply configuration changes during a maintenance window so a restart does not interrupt players unexpectedly.
- Use the documentation for the exact Spigot or Paper version, especially after an upgrade.
- Review world-specific blocks whenever a world is renamed, copied, or regenerated.
- Prefer a small, reversible change over replacing the whole file with a template from another server.
- After an upgrade, compare the newly generated file with your backup and reapply only settings that remain supported.
Bottom line
