The first step is identifying which “One Block” you have. A plugin OneBlock server runs BentoBox and its OneBlock addon on an otherwise compatible Minecraft server; players usually connect with a normal client. A modded One Block pack includes mods and requires the exact Minecraft version, loader, Java release and client-side mod set named by the pack. The plugin route needs no Forge or NeoForge. The modded route does.

Use the guide below to choose the right path, install it on your own machine or a hosting panel, and diagnose the failures that most often stop a server from starting.

Choose the right One Block implementation
“One Block server” describes two different technologies. Installing the wrong one can leave you with a server that starts but does not contain the intended gameplay, or with a crash caused by an incompatible loader.

How to tell which one you downloaded
- A page that calls the download an addon, lists BentoBox or refers to Spigot plugins is the plugin route.
- A CurseForge or Modrinth page that lists a loader, a Minecraft version and a collection of mods is the modded route.
- If the pack offers a separate server pack, use that for the server rather than guessing which files to remove from the client download.
Do not try to combine both approaches by dropping a NeoForge mod into a plugin-only server or by installing BentoBox into a modded pack. They solve different problems and have different compatibility rules.

Prepare the server before installing anything
Confirm the Minecraft version and loader
Read the pack’s own page before downloading an installer. The Minecraft version and loader are normally displayed beside the pack name. Forge mods do not run on Fabric, and NeoForge is not a drop-in replacement for Forge versions later than 1.20.1. A pack labelled NeoForge must be installed with NeoForge for the exact Minecraft version it supports.
Install a matching Java release
Loader guides commonly map Java releases this way: Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later, Java 17 for 1.17 through 1.20.4, and Java 8 for legacy packs. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal rule: the pack documentation and the loader’s requirements take priority. Check the version in a terminal with java -version before you launch the server.

Choose a clean server directory
Create a new, dedicated directory for the server. Keeping it separate from your client launcher prevents accidental mixing of saves, screenshots and launcher metadata. Give the account running the server permission to read and write the directory, and make a backup location outside it before the first world is created.
Decide whether you are self-hosting or using a panel
Self-hosting gives you direct control of Java, memory, files, logs and startup scripts, but you must maintain the operating system and network access. A managed panel generally supplies file management and an installer, while its labels and supported versions depend on that provider. The installation logic is the same: the panel must install the pack’s version and loader, not merely a similarly named vanilla server.
Path A: install a plugin OneBlock server with BentoBox
This path is appropriate when the OneBlock download is a BentoBox addon. It does not use Forge or NeoForge, and it does not require every player to install a modpack.
1. Install a compatible base server
Set up the Minecraft server software and version required by BentoBox and the OneBlock addon. Start it once so it creates its normal directories, then stop it cleanly. Do not install the addon while the server is still running; files can be overwritten or remain unreadable until the next restart.

2. Download BentoBox and the OneBlock addon
Obtain the BentoBox plugin from SpigotMC and download the OneBlock addon that matches your BentoBox and Minecraft versions. Keep the downloaded jar files together until you have checked their version notes. A mismatch between the base plugin and addon can produce a startup error even when both files are present.
3. Put the files in the correct folders
- Copy the BentoBox jar into the server’s
pluginsdirectory. - Start the server once, then stop it. BentoBox creates its data directory and addon location during this run.
- Copy the OneBlock addon jar into BentoBox’s
addonsdirectory inside the plugins data area. - Start the server again and read the console for BentoBox and OneBlock enable messages.
The exact capitalization of directories can differ by operating system. Use the folders created by BentoBox rather than inventing a second addons directory.
4. Configure phases instead of editing the jar
After the addon has generated its files, open the OneBlock phases directory under the BentoBox data tree. Each phase controls the material progression: block-generation entries, their weights, chest loot, spawned mobs and the number of blocks broken before the next phase. Make a copy of an original phase file before changing it, preserve the file format and indentation, and restart after edits so the addon reloads the configuration.
Phase design is where a plugin server differs from a fixed modpack. You can make early phases generous or difficult, alter the relative chance of blocks, add or remove loot and set a different threshold for advancing. Change one phase at a time and test it with a fresh island; an existing island may already have phase progress stored in its data.

- Run the server without errors and confirm BentoBox and OneBlock are enabled.
- Create a test island or world using the addon’s documented command or menu.
- Break enough blocks to confirm the phase counter advances.
- Check a chest, a generated mob and a weighted block entry if you changed those sections.
- Ask a player using an unmodified Java client to connect. If the client asks for a mod, you have probably installed a modded pack rather than the plugin edition.
Path B: install a modded One Block pack with NeoForge
Use this route when the pack page lists NeoForge and supplies a mod collection rather than a BentoBox addon. There was no One Block-specific NeoForge procedure in the available documentation, so the general NeoForge server process must be applied to the pack’s own version and instructions.
1. Record the pack’s exact requirements
Write down the Minecraft version, NeoForge version, Java requirement and pack release before creating the server. Also note whether the author supplies a server pack. Players will need the same pack release on their clients; “the newest version” is not a safe substitute because a single changed mod can alter dependencies or network protocols.

2. Prefer the official server pack
If a server pack is offered, download it and extract it into the clean server directory. Server packs normally omit client-only files and include the configuration and libraries needed on a dedicated server.
If no server pack exists, install the normal pack in a launcher first, then move the entire instance contents into the server directory. Preserve the mods, config, defaultconfigs and any pack-specific directories. Do not copy only the visible mod jars: many packs depend on configuration, scripts or generated data alongside them.

Dedicated servers cannot load graphical client components. Shader loaders and resource-pack mods are typical examples. Remove them from the server copy, but leave gameplay and library mods that the pack identifies as server-compatible. The distinction is not always obvious from a filename, so use the pack author’s server instructions and the crash log. Removing a required common mod is as harmful as leaving a client-only one.
4. Install NeoForge as a server
- Download the NeoForge installer for the exact Minecraft and NeoForge versions recorded in step 1.
- Run the installer and choose Install Server, selecting the clean server directory.
- Let the installer create its libraries, launch files and server arguments. Do not overwrite those files with arguments copied from a different version.
- Copy the pack’s server files into the same directory after the loader installation, resolving prompts in favor of the pack’s documented files.
The NeoForge documentation is the authoritative reference for installer choices. Hosting guides may show a convenient command, but the generated files in your installation are the reliable source for that particular release.
5. Complete the first launch and EULA
Start the server once. It may stop after creating files and displaying the Minecraft EULA requirement. Open eula.txt, read the agreement and change the setting to accept only if you agree. Start it again and keep the console visible while NeoForge loads the mod list. The first run can take longer because libraries and world data are being created.
6. Use the generated startup script
On Linux, the loader commonly supplies run.sh; on Windows, use run.bat. Make the Linux script executable if necessary, then launch it from the server directory. A frequently shown Linux-style example is:

java -Xms4G -Xmx8G @libraries/net/neoforged/neoforge/*/unix_args.txt noguiThe 4 GB initial and 8 GB maximum values in that example are not a universal recommendation; adjust memory for the pack and the machine. The wildcard argument path and script name can change between NeoForge releases, so use the command or script generated by your installer when it differs.
7. Test with an exact client match
- Install the same Minecraft version, NeoForge version and pack release on a test client.
- Start the client and connect only after the server has finished loading.
- Read both client and server logs if the connection is rejected. A missing mod, different mod version or mismatched registry is usually identified there.
- Create a new test world or island before importing an existing save. This separates installation problems from world-data problems.
Using a hosting panel instead of a shell
Panels hide Java installation and process management, but they do not remove version compatibility requirements. A typical NeoForge workflow is to open the modpack installer, search for the pack, select its version and choose the panel’s installation action. One published workflow labels that action “Reinstall this version.” Back up any existing world before using a reinstall control, and confirm which files the panel will replace.

Panel guides from individual hosts describe their own buttons and supported versions. Treat those screens as provider-specific instructions, while treating the pack page and NeoForge documentation as the authority for versions and loader requirements.

The server exits immediately with a Java error
Check java -version and compare it with the pack’s documented requirement. A Java 17 installation cannot be assumed to work for a pack built for a newer Minecraft release, and legacy packs may require Java 8. Point the panel or startup script at the correct Java executable, then remove stale launch arguments from an older installation.

Confirm all three identifiers: Minecraft version, loader version and pack release. NeoForge does not automatically accept Forge mods on newer versions, and a mod compiled for another loader will not become compatible because its jar was copied into the directory. If the pack has a server download, replace the hand-built server files with that package and test again.
The server crashes while loading a graphical mod
Look for shader, resource-pack or other client-only components in the server’s mods folder. Remove only the components identified as client-only, restart, and review the next crash report. If the error changes to a missing dependency, restore the required common library from the server pack.

The client is rejected during login
Install the exact same pack release, Minecraft version and loader on the client. “Works on the server” does not mean a different client pack is acceptable: registry and network changes must match. Compare the first missing or mismatched mod named in the client and server logs instead of deleting random jars.
The console says the EULA has not been accepted
Stop the process, open the generated eula.txt, read the agreement and set the acceptance value only if you agree. Save the file and start the generated script again. Editing a file in a different directory has no effect, so verify that the path is the same directory used by run.sh or run.bat.

Increase the maximum heap only when the host has spare physical memory. In the example command, -Xmx8G is a ceiling, not a promise that the pack needs exactly 8 GB. Reduce the number of simultaneous worlds and heavy processes, then raise the panel limit or -Xmx gradually while watching the console. Never allocate all system memory to Java; the operating system and file cache also need room.
A plugin installation does not show the expected modded content
This is usually an implementation mix-up. BentoBox phases create an island progression through plugin data; they do not install the mods from a NeoForge pack. Remove the plugin setup or create a separate server directory and follow the modded path with the pack’s loader.
Operate the server safely after installation
Keep separate backups
Back up the world, the OneBlock phase files or mod configuration, and the startup settings before upgrades. Store at least one copy outside the live server directory. A phase edit or pack reinstall can be difficult to reverse if the only copy is the currently running files.
Upgrade deliberately
Do not update Minecraft, NeoForge, BentoBox, an addon and the pack in one uncontrolled step. Record the current versions, duplicate the server directory, apply one planned change and launch the copy. For a modded pack, let the pack author’s release notes determine which mods and configurations move together.
Keep player expectations clear
Tell players whether they need a normal client or a specific modpack, and publish the exact Minecraft and loader versions. For a plugin server, explain that progression is configured through phases. For a modded server, distribute the same pack release used by the server rather than a generic One Block download.
