To edit a structure in Fortnite, use the edit control shown for your device and selected mode. If you want edits without selecting individual tiles, enable Simple Edit in Settings > Game; Epic says Simple Edit is unavailable in competitive game modes. In Creative, a control that works elsewhere may still be blocked by the island’s edit permissions.
Choose between regular editing and Simple Edit
Regular editing
Regular editing uses your assigned edit control and requires you to select the parts of the structure you want to change. The binding can differ by device, mode, or your custom settings, so check your own controls rather than relying on a key or button from someone else’s setup.
Simple Edit
Epic describes Simple Edit as a build setting that simplifies editing: press one button while looking at a structure section to edit that part, without manually selecting tiles. To enable or disable it, open Settings > Game and find the Simple Edit setting. Epic says the option is unavailable in competitive game modes. See Epic’s Simple Edit instructions.

- Keyboard and mouse: select the keyboard controls tab and check the edit binding.
- Controller: select the gamepad controls tab and check the edit binding.
Epic’s instructions for changing controls are here: PC or console controls and keybinds. The right binding is the one that is available in your selected mode and comfortable for you; Epic’s guidance does not establish a universally best button or a speed advantage for any particular input setup.
Troubleshoot an edit that does not work
Confirm the mode and setting
If Simple Edit is missing or unavailable, check whether you are playing a competitive mode. Simple Edit cannot be used there; use the regular edit control instead. Also verify that you are checking the controls tab for your actual input device.

Try another controller button if L3 fails
Epic has posted a support notice that some players cannot edit builds with L3 and recommends assigning a different button while it investigates the issue. This is a potentially temporary issue notice, not a permanent rule about controller bindings. Check Epic’s L3 troubleshooting notice for the current status.
Check Creative island permissions
If editing works in other modes but not on a Creative island, the island may limit who can edit player builds. Epic’s Player Settings documentation says Allowed to Edit has two values: Default, which allows players to edit only their own builds, and Anyone, which allows broader editing. If you are the island creator or have permission to change its settings, review this option; otherwise, ask the creator or island host. Read Epic’s Creative player settings documentation.

What the blue highlight means in Creative
Epic’s Creative documentation says a structure in edit status is highlighted blue. Its instructions describe activating the pickaxe, pointing at a structure, and pressing G in the documented Create or in-game context. That key instruction is contextual documentation, not a universal Battle Royale keybind; use the controls menu for your own device and mode. See Epic’s edit-status documentation.

Compare your options by input device, controls available in the mode you play, and whether the assigned edit button is comfortable and accessible. You can customize controls in-game, but the official guidance does not show that a particular keyboard, mouse, controller, or binding makes editing faster. Changing a binding or trying optional remappable hardware is a matter of preference, not a guaranteed performance improvement.
